Also there are lots of guides about being F2P and using the characters you get for free. You definitely don’t need to spend money.
And the guides are just how to be most effective, probably not even necessary.
I am very very interested. My son started it a few weeks ago, but for some reason or another we did not continue. I will try to start it myself.
Controller on a bigger screen seems to be what works for me. And the game has finally gotten its hooks into me; I tried to resist for a while because I was already playing too many games (as usual), but I've given in. (Here I've also bought too many games this year and, alas, I'm playing mostly free games between this and my phone...)
I'm only AR 10 as of last night.
I had only gotten the guaranteed Noelle on my first pull. Last night I used free currency to buy some more fates and got 10 in the mail (I think everyone did?) so I did two more, the other 8 for 10 beginner pull and a normal one. The normal one actually turned out the best as I got two pretty highly rated characters, one of them a 5-star.
That said, I looked at a bunch of tier lists out of curiosity and, part of it may be the newness, but the nature of the game seems to lead to more variance in these lists versus a, say, turn-based gacha. And honestly, I like that.
I also picked up another magic user and like Lisa, am finding her awkward to use. Something about how you seem to have to hold down the attack button to fire the projectiles? I don't have any characters yet with a polearm, but I think I'll always prefer the quickness of swords. That sort of tracks with my preferences in other action games with weapon choices though. Bow is fun to pull out if I'm in the mood to snipe.
Is it weird that I kind of want to stick with the "Traveler" with story quests? I like the continuity of playing the character that shows up in the cutscenes and find it a little jarring if she's not even on my team at the time. I can see moving her off the team when I'm not going to be doing any quests for a while, but I sort of want to keep her on even with a better option available. But story tends to be one of my focuses in games...
Anyway, I'm really enjoying the game. I might sign up for the $5 thing just to give some money because I think it's deserved.
Also, interesting to see in the player survey that they're not trying to hide their influences. They ask about BotW, of course, but there's also Xenoblade Chronicles, Nier Automata and a few others mentioned.
Yeah, they have done a pretty good job with giving us variance in play-styles, which creates variety in tier lists, although there are a few characters who are universally regarded as top tier.
I really hope the Traveler gets some better power sets as new nations are added. It does feel a little odd not having her there, but her powers are a bit lackluster.
And don't worry about not having a polearm user... there is only one in the game, at least for a couple more weeks. You will get her for free when you eventually make it a few levels down in the Spiral Abyss.
Some ramblings about the Japanese voice cast:
So many recognizable voices! Perhaps too much so in some cases.
The female traveler is arguably the most well known voice in the game, Aoi Yuuki, who has had plenty of opportunities to show the range of her voice. Some of her roles include Madoka (Puella Magi Madoka Magica), Yuuki (SAO), Tatsumaki (One Punch Man), Tsuyu Asui/Froppy (My Hero Academia), Futaba Sakura (Persona 5), and Tanya (The Saga of Tanya the Evil). She also voiced Peashy/Yellow Heart in the Neptunia franchise.
Speaking of Neptunia, it's very easy to hear Purple Heart when Lisa speaks, both of them having a purple color-scheme certainly helps. Haven't had the same problem with Keqing, who share a voice actress with Uni, but I also don't have her for my party.
I find it amusing that that Fischl shares her voice actress with Rikka, since both are eye patch wearing chunibyo and Rikka is generally recognized as the character that popularized that character archetype.
The only voice that actually bothers me is Ningguang since I know that voice as belonging to Irisviel in the Fate/ franchise, another red-eye, white haired woman.
Went for the $5/month plan at the beginning of this Battle Pass. The daily pull has now netted me a Beidou. So excited to have a viable claymore user. Mining just got a whole lot better. Think she'll be my second main DPS alongside Xiangling. Dual-party abyss should be interesting now
I've been using four star Chongyun as my claymore user and kind of my main to be honest. Feels very powerful and seems to do the most damage in conjunction with other elements.
Just did The Chi of Guyun quest, and it was really fun! Lots of neat puzzles. I can't beat the final battle yet. Got really close. Kinda underlevelled and out of food.
I've just been making due with Noelle for my Claymore usage. While not a big hitter, she's a reliable tank/healer. I'll likely just stick with her until the rumored Sayu (wind claymore user from Inazuma with a tanuki theme) comes out.
My travels, meanwhile, landed me on a secluded island with stones lined up to form a heart. It wasn't in a very good position to be a selfie spot, so I figured that had to be something else to it. After messing around with it, I looked it up, and indeed there is a chest there, but only if you stand in the heart with a co-op partner.
Guess I'll get back to it later.
Mantid, I'll stand with you any time.
Has anyone experienced the bug on PS4 where when you start aiming with a bow with L2 and your character starts walking forward? Makes some challenges incredibly frustrating.

I'm amazed that you are having control issues / things don't feel right for you. M&K feel great for me.
Not having spent any money, I'm level 70+ with 3 characters, my main party being Barbara lvl 50, Chungyun lvl 70, Fischl lvl 70, Xiangling lvl 75
And I'm able to take on all encounters on my level / slightly higher level domain challenges. I can squeak out the level 80 challenges with proper application of food buffs as long as I'm not completely hampered on the elemental types.
It feels like a M/K game for sure. They didn't do a great job with adapting it. You can tell it was designed with WASD 4 axis movement vs analog movement.

I was able to redeem the codes GENSHINGIFT and GENSHIN1111 recently. Together they'll net you 110 primgems and some Mora/Exp
Just did it and can confirm they're legit.
Redeem there here. I also found a list of promo codes that I assume will be updated and may be worth keeping an eye on...
New event phase 2 is extremely lucrative. In addition to the free rewards at multiples of 5 clears up to 30, you get ~40 shards per clear at the cost of 20 resin. With this you can buy 10 Hero's Wit exp books, 400,000 Mora, loads of ascension mats or any combination of the above.
I'm glad I did the 3 world bosses early this week, because I know where my resin will be going for the remainder of the week. Or however long it takes me to buy out the store.
The thing I hate about this event is when those damn Hydro-gunners stand so far outside of the circle that I can't kill them or anything else because of their healing! Gaw!
Same with the fire Fatui guys. Jerks!
Fischl and Oz are pretty good at pewpewing down the mobs that loiter outside the circle. I do wonder if a co-op guest could go outside the circle to gank them without resetting the progress.
So, real good soundtrack, but there's one piece that rips off a little bit of Sibelius's Symphony #5's most popular bit. Listen to where this starts for a minute to hear it.
I can't find the Genshin Impact song on YouTube. I sifted through it a bunch, but there is a lot of music, and I couldn't pinpoint where it is. I'll keep looking.
Anyways, I've had Sibelius stuck in my head ever since I started playing this game.

These can be redeemed on PS4 also if you go into your settings, there's a spot.

Ok, so how in the heck do you avoid getting stun locked/knock back locked against the treasure hunters when doing the meteors? I get about 4 seconds as they spawn in to get an attack in but then immediately get hit by a combo of fire/lightning and heavy attacks and just get bounced around. So incredibly frustrating. I have tried dodging but quickly run out of stamina. Is there a stat I need to look at building in my artifacts to resist this?
Yeah, there are tougher than usual treasure hunters in some of the meteor sets, aren't there? Still not anywhere near as annoying as the Fatui spawns for me, but it was definitely a surprise for them to not be the total pushovers they are everywhere else I've encountered them so far.
While it's probably not a great idea to try to build your stats around defending from status effects (since for the vast majority of the game strong offense, crown control, and mobility is a much better way to stay alive than trying to face tank damage), there are a few things that can help.
First, your team's elemental composition can provide strong beneficial effects both offensively and defensively that can help reduce the impact of enemies triggering disabling elemental effects on you. Check out the "elemental resonance" information on the party config screen in game (or on this page) for more details, but, for example, if you want to reduce the chances of being stunned by repeated overload attacks, figure out what element is priming you (ie, do you most often have a fire effect or an electro on you before the explosion), then set yourself up with either a double water team to reduce the duration of fire effects or a double ice team to protect against electro.
Second, if you're frequently running out of stamina and you haven't spent some time gathering the oculus orbs, it might be worth prioritizing a bit more. Aside from being fun and engaging to hunt them down, you get a ton of valuable rewards in addition to more than doubling your stamina pool by the time you've found most of the easy ones currently in the game. If you HAVE increased your stamina pool already though, you might just need to be a bit more judicious about your dodge and charged attack use in combat. Also, there are lots of easy food recipes to reduce stamina usage, and a few characters (including Kaeya) have talents that reduce stamina usage as well.
Finally, take a look at your team composition and see if you might have options to improve your own crowd control abilities and consider adjusting your approach to combat to prioritize focusing fire and crowd controlling the enemies that are most likely to stun you first.
The easiest and most direct option is usually going to be making good use of an anemo character, since most of them provide strong crowd control on their own; Venti and Sucrose being probably the best at it, and I'm told Jean is pretty solid as well in addition to healing, but the Traveller will do in a pinch too if you don't have any of them. However, really just setting up your team with strong elemental reaction abilities in general is going to to a world of good both in terms of crowd control and more generally. Most of the reactions provide some level of crowd control (either via direct effects with freeze, overload, and electro charged, or simply via standard staggering effects from high damage with the rest), and just constantly laying down a never ending barrage of damage will always make things easier.
So, in terms of what stats to chase to help manage tougher enemies with powerful stun locking abilities, for me the best route would be to just figure out what's going to make your team more capable of causing bigger, more frequent elemental reactions. However, what that actually is going to be is going to depend pretty heavily on what characters, weapons, and artifacts you have available.
Anyway, I'm happy to go into a lot more depth about general team building philosophy if you're interested, as well as provide specific advice if you want to let me know what you've got available to work with. I'll leave it at that for now though to avoid wasting your time with a bunch of information you may or may not care about.
Turret characters are extremely useful in these challenges since mobs are clustered so tightly. Against the treasure hunters, I spend a lot of time just dropping Oz and Guoba and then running around evading.
Is there a way to tell what the meteorite's element will be before starting the set of 4? I've noticed that each set Mona finds will be all the same element. This means I can prepare for #2-#4 with a better reaction comp, but the first one can be pretty rough if it's fire, as most of my standard team is fire.
I haven't run Anemo, as my only source is the main character. Is swirl of better than average utility in these challenges?
Swirl is decent damage (although with Venti, there's also solid base damage in his skill and burst as well), but unless you've got either the artifact set or one of the various talents or constellations that makes it a resistance debuffer, the bigger benefit of the various anemo character's abilities is how well they take enemies out of the fight. And specific to these challenges, many are also quite good at keeping enemies grouped up in the place where you want them (although the effectiveness and ease of use in that regard will differ from character to character).
But really, if you've got a good team that's keeping people stunned/frozen/otherwise disrupted and in place, I wouldn't worry too much if you're missing a solid anemo character. Actually, the anemo Traveller might be a bit of a mixed bag in this situation because while her skill draws enemies in (assuming you've got her constellations unlocked), her burst is probably quite likely to carry them out of the circle, which is not great at all for these challenges.

Sorry, this is probably just rehashing old discussion.
The discussion around this game is interesting. It seems to have grabbed some people who haven’t really played a game with gacha before. And its gacha rates are among the worst.
I think it helps a lot that you actually get to do something with the characters you pull. They're not a fancy portrait that zooms in a bit when it does its special attack. They're fully modeled characters that you run around with and fight with and see in animated cutscenes. That makes it a lot more engaging.
It's also probably in part why the pull rates are so terrible. It has to cost a lot of money to make characters of the quality level that Genshin does.
Little late to this convo, but I agree completely. After being blindsided by how much enjoyment I was getting out of Genshin Impact, I spent some time checking out a bunch of other gacha games on my phone to see if I had been missing out on anything interesting there. It's true that both gacha pull rates and rate of currency accumulation is much more generous in every other game I tried, but outside of some beautiful animated 2d portraits and maybe one fancy looking ultimate animated attack, there isn't much to these characters compared to the ones in Genshin Impact.
The characters in Genshin are fleshed out and surprisingly diverse. All four of the characters in my current party play very differently from one another. In all the other gacha games I tried, my incentive for acquiring new characters was to strengthen my ability to progress, fill a role in my team, or admire some nice artwork and animations. In Genshin, I'm excited to get a new character because they look fun to play. Of the four new characters I picked up on this new banner (Childe, Ningguang, Beidou, and Diona), only Diona plays remotely similar to any of the characters I already owned, and even then, she fills a very different role than the other two bow users in my possession.
It also seems like there is a lot of love poured into making appealing characters outside of their appearances and abilities. Every character has detailed idle animations and unique quirks based on character backstories. One of my favorite little details is for Barbara. Barbara is church deaconess with aspirations to become a pop star. When other characters attack near NPCs in towns, they flinch, but when Barbara attacks, they applaud as though she's performing. I recently read about another cool detail for Venti in the current Unreconciled Stars event. During the meteor shard hunting section, your character's Vision pulsates and glows to indicate your proximity to the fallen meteorites on the ground. During Venti's portion of the main story quest, we learned that his Vision is fake, so it doesn't do anything.
That said, I looked at a bunch of tier lists out of curiosity and, part of it may be the newness, but the nature of the game seems to lead to more variance in these lists versus a, say, turn-based gacha. And honestly, I like that.
Definitely. There are some undisputed uber strong characters like Diluc, Klee, and Venti, but pretty much everyone is usable. The only character that just seems plain bad to me is Amber. Even then, people have managed to make her work as a main DPS with specific charged shot builds.
The other thing to keep in mind is that the only place where tier lists are really worth considering is the last few stages in Spiral Abyss. This is a PvE game. Every character can complete virtually everything in the game with enough time and resources.

Zero gave a good rundown, but I've got a couple other suggestions for you.
1) Run someone with shields. You can't be CC'ed while you have a shield up, and if you are generating shields of the same element type through a geo reaction, it absorbs that respective element much more effectively. Diona and Beidou also have shield options if you have either of those characters. Ningguang has been pretty clutch for me in these meteor challenges for both the geo shields and her Jade Screen ability to block projectiles.
2) Run Geo MC. They're not a great character on their own, but geo pillar can be surprisingly useful when fighting small groups of powerful enemies. You can use it to create geo shields and as line of sight to block projectiles. Also, sometimes enemies will just kind of get stuck on top of a geo pillar and be helpless for the duration. That's always fun.
Oh, and if you are like me and didn't run with a cryo character in your party for most of the game, you may not realize that the shields on the lightning fatui a-holes with the big hammer can be brought down quickly with cryo damage. I just figured that out at AR42, and let me tell you, breaking that shield with a couple cryo attacks is a lot faster than trying to brute force your way through it!
I have super relied on Chongyun as a cryo/claymore user to break shields, mine, and whatnot. Just started combining him with Barbara to freeze the heck out of everything. It's so satisfying! I also love Chongyun's eating a popsicle animation.
On avoiding knock-back, I mainly go the shield route, but I have relied some on turret powers and a little on freeze (when Diona's Burst is up at least), so I'd say all of them are sound strategies if you aim towards using them.
Well, it usually works...
Definitely agreed that the characters in this game go way beyond any in other gacha games. Even going into the voice screen and listening to the little clips are entertaining. Still disappointing when you do a 10-wish and only get weapons. I had that happen two times in a row. But the fun of playing the game and using the characters I already have outweigh that a lot. And.. I can only focus on so many characters. I do hope that the game continues to have ways to level up additional characters because, at the moment anyway, the idea of being able to spend some time with all the ones I get seems really appealing.
I hit AR 20 last night right before going to bed, so I've got a bunch of new stuff to do next time.
