Star Wars: Squadrons Catch All - Lock S-Foils in Attack Position!

Guess I’ll be ordering this tonight in large part due to FOMO.

Ars thinks it needs some Vr bug fixes before giving their recommendation. One one hand these are fairly small UI bugs with a big impact on a specific use case. On the other hand, why weren't they fixed earlier?

Still, I just purchased and pre installled. Very much looking forward to coop with my brother tomorrow. We are both veterans of the XWing series (all of them) and if all this does is immerse us in sitting in those cockpits and dogfighting a bit, I'm fine with that! I had to get a $30 joystick for $70 off eBay for this, thanks to the current state. (Also it should be embarrassing to the peripherals industry that the Extreme 3D Pro from the early 2000's is still best in class.)

That said there are some... n64 Rogue squadron elements I'm seeing in reviews that I don't like. People coming to nearly complete stops while dogfighting, easily bouncing off 'terrain' etc. I have a feeling that the 'feel' of this is going to be extremely arcadey in the end. I'm hopeful for solid DLC though, maybe a coop campaign.

I'm playing on a PS4. The bad news first - the game hard crashed on me in the middle of the first mission. However, when I started up again, I was right back where I crashed, since the game saves throughout the missions. This was not a feature in the original X-Wing :).

Overall, I had a fun time going through the prologue. The Imperial portion starts with scanning ships for Rebel scum so I felt quite at home. To me, the game looks very nice, especially the light reflecting in the cockpits.

Character creation was more flexible than I expected. A choice of 10 heads and 10ish voices, with each side having different options. Two body types as well, and you can mix and match any way you like.

I'm not too interested in multiplayer, but if I get a good single player campaign, I'll be happy. I may dip my toe in fleet battles.

Took me awhile to get things running in VR. Not impressed with the overall menu/UI management in VR, but once you actually get into the cockpit and start flying - HOT. DAMN.

Question - I bought this on steam, but am now wishing I'd bought it on Epic with my £10 discount there, since cross play between platforms looks to be pretty seamless. However - when I play stuff in VR I usually use Steam VR. I presume if I play it via Epic, the Oculus Rift will just ... work? Anyone tried it yet? Or other VR games in Epic or Origin?

Huh. Steam is telling me the game isn't out yet, and I have to wait until yesterday for it to unlock. It's also happy to tell me that a couple of my friends got in an hour of flight time last night. Guess I'll try deleting the encrypted cache and reinstalling...

The menu and control mapping is such hot sh*t that I might return this one.

HOW DO YOU MAP THE F*CKING THROTTLE TO THE SLIDER ON THE X52 THROTTLE STICK AND NOT THE GOD DAMN THROTTLE!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?

Also appears to need some VR optimization because this thing is murdering my card. Might have to drop the settings a bunch (oh wait YOU CAN'T!)

If you go into whichever menu option lets you remap controls, and then change to "Flight Stick", and then scroll down to throttle, click the currently mapped control on the right, and then move whatever slider axis you want to use, it will map it.

I had the same reaction as you and figured this out entirely by accident. "Remap controls, I guess I'll give this a try. Oh here's the throttle which is currently mapped to some random axis I have no idea what that is I'll just click and see if this works there's no way - oh, hey that was it. That was..easy?"

I had to go offline and back online through the Steam menu to get it to unlock. No idea why.

I got it, would like to connect with you guys for games, is there a Discord channel yet?

There likely will be one in the "On-Demand" section of the voice channels. Takes a lot to get a dedicated channel these days

Yup, I've got Tetris Effect on Epic, and I play that in VR. In your Epic library, instead of just clicking on the icon to start the game, expand the options (i.e. click the ellipsis) and there's "Launch in VR" options (one for SteamVR, one for OculusVR). Worked seamlessly with my Vive Pro.

Yeah I guess we just discussed this in the general space games thread. Now that it's out I'll see what y'all think before I get it.

Hmm, I wonder if this would work with the Quest with a link cable as well.

Confirmed I'm not crazy. The HOTAS implementation in this game is all time awful

Extremely same.

Was looking forward to playing it in VR with HOTAS, but yeah. Sounds like the campaign is super lackluster and I've less interest in multiplayer games than I do being repeatedly hit in the crotch with a 2x4, so... shame.

I really just wanted X-Wing, Tie Fighter, or X-Wing vs Tie Fighter.

Norm from Tested played with a Quest2 with Link cable on Origin. It should work on Epic too (confirmed on Reddit that generally Link + Epic is fine)

Through my googling I just found that Origin has native Oculus support. Apparently the game runs much better than on Steam for Oculus users. I'm trying to find out if Epic does as well. Do you have a link for that reddit thread?

I like space sims too much to pass it up. i figure 40 for 10 hours of sp means $4 an hour which is actually reasonable. Also since I will trade it in or sell it when finished I should lower that $ per hour ratio.

*shrug*

Seems like the MP portions can be played solo with AI teammates (like Avengers).

Only just dipped in and I am still messing with my HOTAS button mapping, but I'm enjoying the experience. Once I'm a little more settled on my mapping, I'll dust off my rift and jump back into VR. It's been a while...

It's been fine for me, save for having to remap the throttle to the throttle. Which was no more difficult than any other remapping I've had to do in any other game. I'll have to figure out which kind I have... it's something that was recommended as an entry-level setup for Elite Dangerous. I've just dabbled with the campaign so far, and haven't yet really set about dialing everything in precisely.

I did think something was off at first, but I put that down to the TIEs in the prologue not handling like the TIEs I remember from my youth. The other ships I tried in Practice mode felt a lot better.

I've heard the AI is pretty terrible, though, unfortunately. Thankfully, that's typically patchable! So if they sort it out, the campaign and any fake-multiplayer bits will get a lot better.

And then I'm onboard.

The reviews have enticed me and I thought this was $60. I’ll probably buy tomorrow at $40. Who’s playing on PS4?

Is the multiplayer mostly PvE, PvP, or a blend?

Who all is on xbone?

I just bought it on Epic with the $10 off coupon. The Epic store "version" is just a purchase that links to the Origin store. It ties your accounts together and downloads on Origin.

Important question: Can you actually lock your S foils in attack position (or more likely do the reverse)

It has crossplay, doesn't it?

Edit: Yes: https://www.pcgamer.com/star-wars-sq...

Oh cool. I’m used to EA or Sony being jerks about that.

I played the prologue missions with the Thurstmaster HOTAS X on PC, and the experience felt very much like what you see in that video. I thought maybe I was just rusty (something just felt off, so I figured it was me), but it (in addition to me being old/rusty), I think it was also this. Banking in any direction just felt super sluggish. Hopefully something that can be tuned, but even despite that, it was a lot of fun!

Sure does.
