Star Wars: Squadrons Catch All - Lock S-Foils in Attack Position!

Pages

Well, I went looking for a catch-all on the upcoming Star Wars: Squadrons and found nothing, so I'm getting it started here!

Look, I've always been a Star Wars nerd. Love or hate the "new era" of Star Wars, I think we can all agree that the space dog-fighting is a highlight of the series. I was a huge fan of the X-Wing and Tie Fighter games from the '90's and I'm hoping this game can be a spiritual successor to those classics. And, hey, VR mode included?! I literally bought the first Star Wars Battlefront just for that VR Rogue One mission! If they can deliver more of that time of fun in this game, then my purchase is totally justified; I've pre-ordered on PSN to play in PSVR.

Any other pilots out there getting pumped up for this?

Game play trailer here!

I'm very, very excited, and I'm a little angry at myself for making plans this weekend that mean I won't be able to play on Saturday or Sunday. I'll just have to hope I can get some game time in during Thursday and Friday.

Looks pretty awesome.

I have so little love for Star Wars that i had planned on completely ignoring this, but i just found out it'll support VR + HOTAS and now I'm interested.

Well, I don't know for sure when the pre-order will unlock on PSN, but I've changed my primary install location to my faster internal SSD instead of the USB HDD, I've cancelled my evening meetings for Wednesday night, cleared up my Thursday calendar, and cancelled meetings for Thursday night. If everything goes smoothly, I'm going to be sitting on my couch with my headset on from midnight Wednesday night when this unlocks until I can't fly anymore. Then as soon as I'm off work Thursday, I'm right back into the cockpit until the wee hours of Friday morning. I just hope this is a smooth launch with no bugs!

Sadly it doesn't seem to support TrackIR so I've become less interested.

Yeah of course I'm in on this.

My son is super hyped for this so of course we'll be getting it. I already have a decent VR + HOTAS rig for flight sims, so I'm hopeful this will turn out to be good.

It unlocks/releases Friday though, right?

I missed out on the original Tie Fighter vs X-Wing so I am definitely in.

I just preordered for my PS4. The game says it unlocks Thursday at 9pm PST.

I'm very excited. Back in the day I played of ton of X-Wing and TIE Fighter. My best friend preferred Wing Commander. In those games, I often felt I was in a bubble just spinning around, whereas in the X Wing games I felt I was navigating space. It certainly helped that I was a big Star Wards nerd at the time.

Managing energy for shields and weapons - yes!

It's still worth playing. I have a feeling it'll still be more robust than Squadrons.

I'm excited, and the previews look promising. I'm planning on holding out for early reviews though.

VR and HOTAS at the ready...

The old games are absolutely worth playing. Based on the videos I've seen though, Squadrons is looking a LOT closer to X-Wing than I expected. Energy management is in. I don't expect that system will be as granular as the old game, but it does have some extra wrinkles that the old series didn't have. Throttle sweet spots are in, so you'll turn faster or slower depending on your throttle setting, but it looks like it's one at 50% instead of having break points at 33% and 67%. On top of that they're layering in boosters/afterburners, which the original series didn't have. The space expansion for Star Wars Galaxies did though, and that integrated really well with the variable-turn-rate-based-on-throttle flight model so I'm glad to see it here.

The only big question I haven't found an answer to is whether they have the wingmate commands. Being able to send a "cover me" or "attack my target" request to other players that integrated with their targeting system helped a lot when I was playing XvT in my sophomore dorm.

Oh they BETTER have wingmate commands, FFS.

Based on what I've played there is a ping system in the game to let allies know who to target, I just didn't see it used much so I can't remember if it'll also call out when you're being chased and need some help.

One little thing they added that I really like is you can adjust what your targeting computer selects when you change target. Like you can tell it you only want to target capital ships, or objectives, or other fighters. It works better in single player I think but it's a cool thing to have.

Was Apex Legends the EA game with the awesome ping system? As I understand it that studio was sharing that code with the rest of EA. I know the Anthem devs said they had gotten a copy, though not in time to use it. Squadrons could probably make good use of that. On the other hand, a ping system based on knowing what you're pointed at might not be the best at handling "someone please kill the enemy behind me."

I am so glad you posted that. I was literally going to be online tonight at midnight waiting for an unlock that wasn't going to happen. Maybe I'll just go back and play that Rogue One VR mission again a few more times tonight instead to get in the mood. Or just make a big push to finally finish Control so that game is off my pile before starting the new hotness.

I'm hoping that this is the Space Fighter VR game I was hoping Elite Dangerous would be. Not to take away from ED - that's been one of the most immersive VR experiences I've enjoyed - but boy, did it become boring...

Some of the game play that video showed is like X-Wing and Tie Fighter only with VR and great graphics.

Early reviews are very positive.

Polygon really appreciated the quality of the VR implementation and ease of crossplay.

Yep, here it is.

PC Gamer was a bit more muted, but I've seen enough to pull the trigger, as it were.

Has EA commented on which HOTAS are supported on PC? If not, that could mean all, but I remember being very excited for Ace Combat 7 supporting HOTAS only to learn what they meant was "we support one very specific HOTAS".

Well, last month they announced HOTAS support on Playstation and Xbox, so I assume we'll see it on Windows as well...

I'm pretty sure I read something about how they were trying to support as many joystick setups as they could, but that would have been months ago and I can't find a source.

Oh good.

Welp, I was denied a key, so I bought the dang thing. Can't wait to dive in. I really, really hope it's gonna be good, and it really warms my heart to see all the excitement about it.

Also pre-ordered and curious to play it tonight on the PS4.

What's actually on the comms menu, how difficult is it to select "cover me" while you're taking fire, and will that give your teammates a prompt that to automatically target one of the ships on your tail?

That was a pre-release key binding screenshot and all I can find. Not sure if they will make every command under the comm wheel to have a keybinding (I hope so).

Reviews are promising! I was a bit lukewarm on the graphics and was worried it would be a budget title but I think I'm in. Use that Epic coupon FTW.

I love the look of the game but MP is not my thing so I am going to wait for used. Still a lot of fun to watch youtube of though.
