Felix “Wedge Antilles” Threepaper
Welcome folks, and happy “33rd Anniversary of the debut of Star Trek: The Next Generation” week! Nintendo may want you to believe that there is a more significant anniversary this week, but 2 years after Super Mario Bros was released, Star Trek: The Next Generation brought the first utopian sci-fi of our age. The show recovered from its first-season stumbles to go on for another 6 years, partly due to the sheer acting power of everyone’s favourite space dad, Patrick Stewart. You may all celebrate with a nice cup of tea: Earl Grey, hot.
Star Wars: Squadrons is the Star Wars dogfighting sim that we’ve been waiting for all century. Star Wars: Battlefront II had a dogfighting mode that was decent enough, but it didn’t have the depth and mission variety of the classic 1990s LucasArts series of X-Wing and TIE Fighter. The dogfighting was challenging and fun, with solid single-player campaigns. Then, X-Wing vs TIE Fighter brought multiplayer. Star Wars: Squadrons offers the best of both worlds, with a single-player campaign that flips between the fledgling New Republic just after the events of Return of the Jedi and the down-but-not-out Galactic Empire. And there’s also multiplayer, with crossplay across all systems, including VR, where you can do team deathmatch dogfights or fleet battles that involve defending or attacking bigger, capital ships. Every mode also supports HOTAS joysticks, without which the older games were near-unplayable. Fans of the old games will recognise the Shield-Lasers-Engine power configurations, and the graphics look simply amazing.
Super Mario Bros. 35 celebrates the 35th anniversary of Super Mario Bros by making it a competitive multiplayer game. You race against up to 35 other Marios to complete each level, griefing each other along the way. This is about the only thing that hasn’t already been done to this vintage stalwart. Interestingly, it’s playable only for a limited time, until March 2021.
Genshin Impact is a Chinese action-RPG, set in an open world that looks like a mod of Breath of the Wild. The devs have been quite open about their inspiration. The game is free-to-play and has gacha mechanics, otherwise known as loot boxes.
I’m all about Star Wars: Squadrons this week. My main concern is whether it will be playable with standard controllers or if I will have to fork out for a fancy flight stick. GOTW.

Lots of wait and see this week.
How did I live before digital distribution of old, cheap games?

I can't imagine EA of all people would make a Star Wars game that required niche hardware like a HOTAS.
It's GOT to be fine with a controller because of the IP, surely?
You don't make Coca Cola that can only be drunk from a crystal decanter.
You've never known true joy until you've shaken a lich stick at someone.
Sure, I may be able to muddle through with my controller, but what if I want to pull Poe Dameron-level maneuvres?

Spelunky 2 for Steam please

I'm very interested to see how Squadrons holds up on Current Gen hardware. Im already holding off on Wasteland 3 till the PS5 as the load times sound bad, I suspect Squadrons might be the same for my poor launch PS4
Oh don't worry, you can still give off the vaguest, slightest whiff of a gay romance with only a controller.
