Welcome folks, and happy “268th Anniversary of Britain (and therefore America) adopting the Gregorian Calendar” week! Yes, this is the calendar we still use today. Since its development in 1582, the Brits had held fast because it was instituted by a Pope, and was therefore not to be trusted. Even when they finally did adopt it, they called it something else to pretend they devised it completely independently. You may all celebrate by listening to Australian Crawl’s 1981 song, “Unpublished Critics” and then Guns’N’Roses’ “Sweet Child O’Mine”.

There’s not much in my wheelhouse this week. After finishing Wasteland 3, I’m in one of those post-game funks where I don’t know what to play next because I want to just keep thinking and talking about the game I just finished.

Spelunky 2 is out on PS4 this week. It will come to PC on 29 September. The original Spelunky is a well-loved, roguelike platformer that offers near-infinite replayability through its randomised levels. Spelunky 2 brings online co-op, improved liquid physics, plus more traps, characters, items, and so on. Derek Yu still heads the project, though he teamed up on the sequel with the same studio he hired to port the original. I’ve never had the pleasure of Spelunking, but I remember some of my favourite games-podcasters raving about it when it came out in 2013. Then, over the next few years, their podcast output slowed to a trickle, and I noticed they were spending all their time doing Spelunky Twitch streams.

This week, Crysis fulfils its destiny to be remastered for every console with releases on PS4, Xbox and PC (Epic Games Store). It will support ray tracing on the PS4 Pro and Xbox One X, which I think is a first for this console generation. I’m confused, because up until now I thought ray tracing was a “next generation” console feature. Maybe we should hire Crytek to put ray tracing into all our current-gen games.

Saboteur SiO is a sequel to the Saboteur games from the 1980s. It’s by the same guy, Clive Townsend, and looks like the last 30 years of computers never happened. Apparently this release is a fundraiser to make a fully-3D Saboteur 3. I have to say, I’m impressed by his persistence to nurse a dream for so long—although if I dredged up my own writing ideas notebook from 1989, it would probably be similarly full of ninjas and rocket launchers. Is there anything you would bring back from 1989?

Drag Racing Rivals comes out on Switch and is sadly about cars, instead of lip-synching for your life.

WWE 2K Battlegrounds is a spinoff to the notoriously broken, and therefore critically panned, WWE 2K20. It’s an attempt to save the franchise after WWE 2K21 was cancelled. There are suspiciously few previews of the game—everyone’s been poring over the same 5-minute Nintendo Direct gameplay video—so I’m not sure if it’s coming out fully cooked. I don’t play wrestling games, though, so YMMV.

eFootball PES 2021 is not a sequel, but an update of eFootball PES 2020 to include the latest player stats and club rosters. The devs’ idea is that last year’s game is so good, why bother making a sequel? You still have to pay about ⅔ of the price of a full game, and there are bundles designed to extract extra cash from you to get your favourite licensed club in there.

Although I’m unlikely to play any of this week’s games, I’ll give a GOTW to Spelunky 2, as it seems kind of a big deal.

Nary a mention of 3D All-Stars?

That video you linked is fascinating. Dude from Australian Crawl commented on it, which is super cool. (I tend to agree with him that GnR was almost certainly not listening to Australian Crawl.)

Aaaaand now I've got that song stuck in my head.

Nary!

I was just being cheeky about the song -- it wasn't like Australian Crawl sued or anything. I'm flattered you checked the link ... gotta raise awareness about Australian bands from the 70s and 80s somehow!
