Xbox Series X|S Catch-All

I know that complaining about the UI is basically a cliche at this point but holy shit is the new UI a huge step backwards. I actually didn’t mind previous versions, it was a little messy but you could customize it and move things around so the most used categories could be grouped towards the top.
You can’t do any of that now. Your pins don’t even appear on the home screen anymore. The Home screen is just a small section of recently used apps/game, links to the library/store/gamepass, and then row after row after row of ads for games and other media. I don’t need a whole section with four different links to Call of Duty stuff. I haven’t played a Call of Duty game since the Bush administration, why is this being shown to me. Don’t make me click through two different menus to get to my pinned games.

I remember Larry being the community face for Xbox when I got into the ecosystem. I have no idea what he's been up to for the past 10 years but I imagine he worked his way up into the C-suite, somewhere.

That's a bummer to hear. They've rolled this out oh so very slowly. Still waiting for my dashboard to update but doesn't sound like I'm missing much.

Picked up a used Series S, first new home console since the PS3. Doing a lot of the setup via the Xbox app was great but, since then, I do seem to get asked for my MS live credentials an obscene amount of times (even after setting to auto-logon, not requiring PIN etc). It would be nice if they could at least use the MS authenticator app.

I'm using a US account, managed to subscribe to Game Pass with a prepaid code (getting that was an ordeal in itself). Game Pass was all pretty great but turns out Persona 5 Royal is a bit of an oddity. I might be one of the first to work this out (couldn't find anything online) but your Xbox downloads a region/language-specific version of the game purely based on your IP's geolocation. It completely disregards your account region, game pass region, MS account location setting/language preferences, etc. And the game itself doesn't have any language options (well at least the Japanese version doesn't). The solution, connect my Xbox to a VPN in the US, redownload the game, done.

Game streaming itself is pretty impressive. As a workaround to the problem above, I played some P5 on Cloud Streaming (via my US VPN so it was in English, was my first hint to the solution above) and it was close to flawless on my cheap android handheld. But the second day my connection must not have been at the same level so I tried streaming using remote play from my Xbox, now that worked great. Had the language problem (since solved) but technically flawless. They nailed this feature.

The main use I expect to get is playing Minecraft with my daughter and, going from Minecraft PS3, this is like a new game! And, those blocks! And that view distance!

Feel free to friend me up.

I don't think I've ever been asked for my MSFT credentials on console?

Work-related apps however...

Here's your authenticator code...
On your personal device...
Now authorize with biometrics on the app...
And put in a code...
NOW we'll let you in.

Gives new meaning to Multi Factor Authentication.

It’s so weird what it requires it for. For example, I went to change my theme color:
“Because you are accessing sensitive information please enter your Microsoft Live password”

On my controller, no thanks. It gives the option to use an alternate method, which would be great if it was just say leaving the Xbox app open on my phone nearby. But, instead, it’s:
- go to this url
- enter eight character code from my Xbox
- enter my live password (which big brother Google knows of course)
- acknowledge the request in the Microsoft Authenticator app.
Welcome to 2023!

I’m sure there must be some setting I’m missing because the above is pretty ridiculous. When I did the initial setup and added my daughter’s account, it prompted me to lock down my Xbox which seemed like a good idea. It was only when it started requiring my password to do almost anything that I realized this was a terrible idea. So, in theory I’ve disabled it but it still prompts me way more than I think it should, like the above example.

I have NEVER run in to that in 22 years on Xbox.

I’m a total newbie to this gen so if anyone knows what I’m doing wrong please let me know :).

Check to see if your sign-in preferences are set to one of the most restrictive options. Sounds like you have the locked down option set.

Great thanks. Mine had been set to customize. Oddly, I checked it and all 4 items were set to PIN not required. But I've now set it to No barriers (the list doesn't include the first option) so I'll see if it makes a difference.

I think the only difference is that that for the top option you pick a default profile and it will sign into that automatically without you clicking on the profile picture.

Are you on a faster rollout track? Mine just updated and I love it. The initial screen is very clean. I now have 50% of my background visible. The small tiles of recent apps and games is where I go to 90% of the time so that’s ideal. I can live with the 4 tiles below them that are mostly ads and/or upcoming game pass updates. But then pushing down gives me recently added to Game Pass (the second most thing i do) and then my pins (mostly media apps that will fall out of the recently used).

I’m not seeing anything not essential until after that row and really I will never go passed that.

Edit uploaded a crappy phone video of my UI

I got the dash update. I can only display two groups now and everything else feels like ads. I hate it.

Yay, UI update finally kicked in.

I feel incentivized now to use the most eye-pleasing wallpaper as I possibly can. Speaking of which, I've never come across dynamic wallpapers for sale in the Store. I've always just gotten them randomly based on the games I play. Is there a hidden away section of the store that I'm missing? Depending on their price, definitely in the market for some new ones so I'm not always rocking the Ghostwire Tokyo wallpaper.

Ugh I hope whatever track some of you guys are on gets tweaked before it hits me.

As far as I know, they're all free.

Go to Settings> General> Personalization> My background> Dynamic backgrounds

Oh, that is what is supposed to fill that big empty area at the top of the new dashboard. Felt unfinished but apparently I just had my background set to solid black.

Oh yeah, I'm aware of that. I wanted to know if there's an option to buy premium ones directly from Store instead of waiting for the free ones to unlock from purchased games.

I’m kinda dreading getting the update. I have 4-5 lists of games carefully curated so each member of my family has specific games recommended for them. This basic functionality *really* should be allowed in the new iteration. From what I’ve seen, that can only be done with 2 lists. That’s dumb.

Your groups will still exist in "My games & apps," at least. I hate that I have to click through two extra menus to find them, though.

Got the update. I hate it. I liked how clean and simple I could keep the old system. Now I can only have two of my personal tabs, and they HAVE to be after the new additions to game pass tab. And the long list of like 10 tabs of ads below them stresses me out.

I really don't like the update either. It is much more non-obvious and more clicks to get into Game Pass and my library. You would think with MS pushing Game Pass as much as they are they would have kept it front-and-center to get into. Also I hate ads.

Yep took me a good 5 mins to realise the Game Pass icon is right at the top now, so it is there and only takes one click but it's small and not obvious anymore.

I want customizability back. I can’t remove or organize any of the stupid extra tabs when you click down.

No problems with the new main page. I like the mini shortcuts at the top center. It’s all the garbage below that is objectively worse customizability than we had before. Honestly surprised I’ve heard so little complaining.

I didn't even see that, will have to check it out! The best way I found was go to the store icon at the top and then within the store go to the Game Pass section.

This is Microsoft’s new disc-less Xbox Series X design with a new gyro controller

Microsoft is planning to refresh its Xbox Series X console in 2024 with an all-new design and features. Codenamed Brooklin, the unannounced console refresh has been accidentally revealed in new FTC v. Microsoft documents this week.

The new Xbox Series X design looks a lot more cylindrical than the existing console and will ship without a disc drive. Internal confidential Microsoft documents reveal it has 2TB of storage (up from 1TB), a USB-C front port with power delivery, and an “all-new, more immersive controller.”

The new controller, codenamed Sebille, is set to be announced later this year and will include an accelerometer for gyro support. It has a two-tone color scheme and will support a direct connection to cloud, Bluetooth 5.2, and a presumably updated “Xbox Wireless 2” connection. Microsoft also lists “precision haptic feedback” and “VCA haptics double as speakers” as specs for the controller. It will also have quieter buttons and thumbsticks, a rechargeable and swappable battery, modular thumbsticks, and you’ll be able to lift it up to wake it.
Inside the new Xbox Series X design Microsoft is also adding Wi-Fi 6E support, a Bluetooth 5.2 radio, and the company is shrinking the existing die to 6nm “for improve efficiency.” The PSU power will be reduced by 15 percent, according to Microsoft’s document. Microsoft is targeting the same $499 launch price of the Xbox Series X.
Microsoft lists a roadmap for this new Xbox Series X console and controller, alongside a refreshed Xbox Series S with 1TB of storage. Microsoft just launched a refreshed Xbox Series S in black, but there could be another refresh on the way in 2024 with Wi-Fi 6E support and Bluetooth 5.2. It will also include this new Xbox controller.

Console customization via Microsoft’s Xbox Design Lab program was also mentioned under a list of goals that the company wants to achieve by 2030, though we should note that according to the leaked documents, this isn’t yet fully funded. A new Elite controller is discussed in the same section, which would presumably include the same updates as the main controller refresh.

Microsoft is tentatively planning to launch this new Xbox Series S refresh next September, with the Xbox Series X refresh in November.

I do like how it looks like a bigger, blacker version of my wifi mesh network pods and if the controller does switch easily from device to device, that's kind of handy. Not switching, but still some nice features there.

I’m still fascinated by how the thermal tube design that was laughable as a Mac Pro seems really nice as a game console.

Looking forward to whatever Elite model incorporates the new controller features.

Leaked by FTC or sneaky planned leak? This is bizarre how it came out.

I'm one of those people who held on to all his X360 discs and excitedly installed a bunch of them the first week or so of owning an X. Now...I only have a handful of disc games installed and barely pop anything into the drive. BUT... I like knowing I have the option to get off my duff once in a while to swap some discs!

The two-tone look of the new controller bothers me. Beyond haptics, I would like for an extra 2 paddles along the back like you see on the elite and Scuff controllers to become a standard. It's not gonna happen for this gen but maaaybe for the next one? That would still leave some features for premium controllers to have exclusivity over.

Brooklin looks like an air diffuser. Just make it white, add some lavender scent and boom.

There's more to the FTC leak.
