Xbox Series X|S Catch-All

As someone who primarily plays my console games at a desk this is now my dream display for next gen consoles and surprisingly it's a TV:

I have a TCL615 that I bought a couple years ago. Great TV for the price, but I recently updated the firmware and have major lag when gaming. I can fix it by doing a soft reset in system settings every time I change to a new input or power on the television. Annoying, but it is what it is.

Anyway, sent it off to the bedroom and replaced it with a 55" CX. Been using it for a week and it's the best TV I've ever owned. Like, I didn't even know blacks could look like this on a tv. There are a couple of minor annoyances, but so far the TV is phenomenal.

I just got the CX 48" to replace the 55" C9 I was using for my PC monitor.. its been great.. I lived with the 55" for a few years now but always felt it was a bit to big on my desk.. the 48" is perfect.

In your years of use, have you experienced any burn-in? It was the biggest inhibiting factor for me pulling the hefty trigger for an OLED before, but it was just the right time to grab this one. I've seen differing opinions on how likely any sort of screen burn-in is when using a TV primarily for gaming. But, real-world opinions always matter to me most.

How close are y'all sitting at a desk with a 55" monitor?

I don’t know what did it. Maybe it was packing away my game collection for the move and seeing so many of my 360 games I’ve love to breath new life into. Maybe it was finally admitting to myself that I don’t feel a deep attachment to many Sony exclusive franchises. Maybe it’s the Game Pass? Or maybe wanting to feel that Xbox controller in my hands again.

But I have swung so hard towards getting a Series X now these last few weeks when it was barely on my radar for months.

I keep wavering between the X and S.

For me, I don't have a setup right now that's conducive to 4k gaming, so that aspect of X appeal is failing to grab me. I've heard reports that the S might actually boot games up faster than the X, since it has lower-res textures. Presumably the lower-res texture difference means also the game download & install sizes would be smaller on the S than the X, so the doubled base SSD size of the X might end up being offset by that.

Also the S is cute as heck.

For me it was definitely gamepass. I didn't buy a console last generation and I wasn't really planning on buying one this generation either but instantly getting a game library through gamepass really adds value to the purchase. On top of that being able to use Xbox One controllers with it since I already own one for my PC saves another $60 I'd have to pay for another controller. It was really smart of them not to force you to upgrade your controllers.

Oh, I use mine as a living room tv. Just mostly game on it. I couldn’t imagine playing Rocket League from anything closer than 6’ away. The HDR in that game makes my eyes kinda hurt as is, let alone if my face is in the screen.

It was the load times for me. The new gen systems didn’t interest me too much until all those videos came out showing the low load times and the Quick Resume feature. I bounce around from game to game often, so this is great for me!

I had my first moment of confusion with the generational switch last night. While browsing the Upcoming Releases section on my X1X last night, I noticed The Medium was listed and available to pre-install (because it's coming to Game Pass). I went ahead and queued it to install, and it did... But last I saw, that game required Series X|S; they're only taking pre-orders on the game for next-gen and PC; and no X1X port has been announced. Did the storefront let me install a game I won't be able to run?

I thought I read somewhere that they were going to let you preload Series games now so you can move them over to the new console and not have to spend a day downloading. Or something.

I feel like I am getting a small taste of the future on my Xbox One X since getting the external SSD. I have been playing Far Cry 3 Classic Edition and when I fast travel it only takes like 4-6 seconds. I don't know exactly how long it took before but it wasn't this quick.

Would love to have one of those but can't justify the price tag. $1500 for the 48 inch model that was reviewed. I did consider getting the new TCL 6 Series QLED for around $600 but I want to just try to hold off until I can get something that supports HMDI 2.1 and 4K 120Hz for less than a grand. The TCL will do 1440p @ 120Hz though. Also hoping OLED or microLED will become more common/cheaper in the next couple of years.

Same. Can't budget that expense right now. I currently, depending on the type of game, play on either a 27" 1440p 144hz freesync TN display with really low input latency or a 27" 1440p 60hz IPS display with great colors. Neither has HDR. I really want to try HDR this generation and those OLEDs look way nicer than my IPS but I'll wait for something more in my price range and TBH when I care more about how a game looks than low input latency I currently don't mind 60hz.

Haven’t had any burn in on any of the OLED’s I’ve owned or currently own (6 currently)

I think I am going to pass on that one.

I read that thinking this is going to look really bad. Started to watch; nope this is the stuff of Ridley Scott inspired nightmares.

Scorn is currently my #1 reason to buy a Series X.

I didn’t watch it and didn’t embed the video for a reason

Yeah made it through one minute and noped out. Doom is a little too scary for me so that one is no go.

I’ve been on a VR kick lately though. Can you imagine that in VR? :shudder:

It is atmospherically creepy. Still seems like a vastly more boring reskin of a generic classic shooter. It is just gross guns that are behave EXACTLY like a pistol, shotgun, or rocket launcher. It has elevators and doors and health packs and they are gross but they behave EXACTLY like you expect. I noticed two or three enemy types but those fit the standard model as well, just grosser. It is visually arresting but it looked very dull to play. I have done everything shown, in other shooters before...a million times. Hopefully they are holding back so as not to show too much too soon.

Yeah that has incredibly powerful "Forgettable generic corridor shooter from 1998" vibes. Everything from the super generic weapons to the footstep sounds that don't actually match the pace of movement.

The footsteps "sound" is very odd to me, but despite old FPS design in the demo, it doesn't matter to me. It looks like what I remember Doom looking like when I first played it. This is an amazing looking interactive art piece. Shame about the gameplay, but I'm gonna enjoy looking around. Like a spiritual sequel to the Undying.

IR receiver is hidden in the 'bind' button.

Doesn't really make up for not having an HDMI pass through, but it is a cool detail.

What if...it was actually an HR Giger-inspired game that had you running in terror constantly with no meaningful way of stopping the awfulness from absorbing you except to try and get out?

Now THAT I'd play.

Now THAT I would buy with the full intention of playing...and then I would definitely chicken out about an hour into it.

Got a notification from Amazon JP that Series S preorders were available again. But, by the time I got on the site 2 hours later they were gone.

They were probably gone 2 minutes before you got the notification.

As someone who got an order from MS itself I wish they would ship mine along with the shipments to the retailers. I know they won't but I wish.
