Welcome folks, and happy “1941st Anniversary of the eruption of Mt Vesuvius” week! You may all celebrate by musing on how such a tragedy, where thousands of people died, has become invaluable to the historical and archaeological understanding of that time. If you think about it, a fascination with history and the toll of past miseries is strangely ghoulish; so then why can I fall asleep listening to descriptions of Mongol battle tactics?

Surgeon Simulator was born in 2013 from a 48-hour game jam. The devs spent another 48 hours polishing it up for release on Steam, and from there it inspired millions of Youtube videos, bringing the previously-niche genre of “hilariously clumsy” games into the mainstream. Surgeon Simulator 2 brings co-op surgery and an unexpected story campaign. There’s also a Creation Mode to make your own gruesome surgeries.

Madden NFL 21 is out this week and flies right over my head like an American football that’s been thrown over my head (Sign up to my simile-writing webinar for a one-time offer of $99.99!).

After the Fast & Furious Crossroads snafu, Project Cars 3 is a nice reminder that Slightly Mad Studios can actually make a good driving game. Previous Project Cars games delivered ultra-realism at the cost of accessibility; driving wheels were compulsory. Project Cars 3 bolts on the accessibility to the point where you can play it with a controller. Many of the changes seem to be about making it more of a Forza experience for a wider audience. It means less time bothering you about tire wear and more time to admire the stunning views.

In a year like 2020, you have to take comfort in any little victory you can. That’s why I’m disproportionately relieved that Zoo 2 is not called 2oo.

For me, the standout GOTW is Wasteland 3. Developer inXile does faction politics and skill checks better than most, partly because it is not afraid to shut down entire quest branches as a consequence of your decisions. One of the things I loved about Wasteland 2 was how it gave you tough choices right from the get-go: an early mission involves two places calling for aid at the same time, and you cannot save both. I also loved the tactical combat and how you could stealth and free-roam to position yourself before a fight, or to avoid one entirely.

With Wasteland 3, inXile is finally walking around with some Microsoft money. But will it be like the first time I had a $50 note in my hand, tasked by my Dad to go buy some milk and bring back the change? At seven years old, I impulsively bought 3 Matchbox cars as well, then walked increasingly slowly out of the shop as it dawned on me that I had to take them back and explain what the hell I was thinking (He confiscated the cars, btw).

Anyhoo, Wasteland 3 now also has a car—unconfiscated, I might add—and it’s good. The Rangers have moved from the Arizona desert to snowy Colorado, but other than that, I have little else to say. I’ve been on media blackout, which I only ever do when I already know I’m getting a game and want to try it on Day One with my own builds and choices—before the wikis and gamefaqs tell me not to bother investing in toaster repair. C’mon, that’s what the second playthrough is for!

Nice, glad to hear Wasteland 3 seems to be on the good side of inXile's output because it seems they vary wildly from release to release.

For me, I'm holding out hope that Windbound is good. It's Zelda BotW's look married to Wind Waker's sailing but in a survival roguelite.

Moon: Remix RPG Adventure is already preloaded. I might go for Captain Tsubasa at some point, since I loved that series as a kid.

Huh, interesting

Wowee, Spawn Point is still going ... good for them!

Yeah, first I saw from them in a long while. I love that the vibe is still very Australian.

Crystal Chronicles finally?

Maybe can scrounge together 4 people with a Switch this time rather than 4 people with GBA link cables.

I think it's cross platform, so you don't even need 4 people with a Switch!

Oh, that's cross platform with the mobile versions too?

Cross-play with Switch, PS4, iOS, and Android. Also, only one player needs to have bought the game. The other three can connect with the demo version and play through the whole game as long as they're playing with a player who owns it.

This just made me consider the purchase of the game seriously for the first time.

Captain Tsubasa: Rise of New Champions anime soccer title just dropped $10 off on Amazon and Walmart pre-order.

Might be a bad sign of extra stock. But if anime soccer is your thing...

Well, now... that's certainly interesting... But I really shouldn't right now. Might be indicative of it going on sale rather soon after release, as well.

So I have gotten Moon RPG, Wasteland 3 and Kandagawa Jet Girls.

Lots of gaming to do.
