GWJ Strategy Gaming Group: Now Playing Age of Wonders 4

Well that's timely. Midnight Suns has been added to PS+ catalogue... So I will give it a go

Downloading and looking to start over the weekend or so. Got a week off next week, so I should be able to get cozy with this.

Did I miss a link to the thread?

Endless Legend - Amplitude’s best 4x game - is currently available for the grand price of absolutely nothing at all on Steam until the 23rd.

You don’t already own it, then no further excuses!

Presumably Amplitude must be getting ready to talk about Endless Legend 2.

It really is a groundbreaking combination of then-new and traditional 4X features which, to me, broke the genre out of its rut and occasioned the rise of several other franchises, including AoW3 and 4. Well worth experiencing and it still holds up.

Definitely hit a difficulty bump in Midnight Suns - I've been ratcheting up the difficulty levels every time it unlocks a progressively harder one, so I'm on like Heroic ++ or something.

But then there's a story mission with a Dread Maiden in Banner's Lab that seems impossible at that setting. It's a two part battle, the Dread Maiden is on the second part, and will resurrect so you have to kill her twice. There's just no way I can get through it, there's too much damage being output to my team on turn 1 of that second phase (sometimes KO'ing a full-health character) to ever catch up, then I'm stuck in a loop of healing and crowd control and can't put enough damage on the enemies before the KOs stack up.

So I've dropped the difficulty down and will try again.

I ran into something similar on the first Storm mission, where you have to knock Sin down twice in part 2 of the mission. In my case, I had barely used wolverine at all, so he had the default, un-upgraded deck, and thus I was taking too much damage just getting to part 2. Once I took him on a few missions and upgraded his cards, the mission was pretty easy.

Gladius Relics of War is currently free to pick up and own on Steam, thanks to the Warhammer Skulls promotion. In the unlikely event you don’t already have it.

Also, trying to work out how I missed the Mechanicus 2 announcement trailer as well!

Worldwalker games have called time on any further development of Wildermyth, outside of any critical patching an possibly bringing it to more platforms.

Edit: I meant to post this in the cRPG thread, so apologies. However given the nature of the gameplay, it probably just about fits here as well!

Stop crossing the streams Sorbicol!! /jk

I should have some time to tackle this game in the next few days so will report back soon.

For those who haven't jumped in yet but don't want to pay any money, Midnight Suns is the current free giveaway on Epic.

Well, if it's the free Epic game for this week, I guess I can get involved in that.

Civilization VII announcement has leaked via the 2K website. It’s all been taken down but I suspect there’ll be something more official in the coming days.

I should add - I took advantage of the free offer from Epic and made a start on Midnight Suns. So far the combat is..... interesting, the dating sim part less so.

Hate to be that guy, but is it about time to start voting for the next quarter? I know some clubs were moving to a different cadence than quarterly, so I could be getting the timing wrong.

Good point Sundown! I'm opening up the floor for nominations. Please nominate five games you would like to play by Saturday, June 22. We will then start winnowing them down.

Showgunners - only just sneaks under the "at least a year old" criteria. It's great, tight focused tactics game with a Running Man vibe.

Templar Battleforce - Space Hulk by way of Trese Brothers. As with all their games, its rudimentary presentation belies a deep and gnarly set of systems.

Dungeon of the Endless - RTS + tower defense. Been meaning to have another bash at this as I bounced off it when it launched.

City of Gangsters - *20s voice* it's a tycoon game, see, git'cha bootleggin' fedora on, send some button-men out to bop rival goons and given 'em a Chicago coffin.

Phantom Brigade - Mechs that can see 5s into the future. Felt like a really fresh strat game and I haven't gone back to it since it's had significant patches and features added.

RimWorld - story generator

Songs of Conquest - love note to HOMM3

Symphony of War: The Nephilim Saga - It's like the GBA era Fire Emblems, but with each unit being a customizable squad. Some compare it to Ogre Battle?

Brigandine: Legend of Runersia - SRPG where you start as one of six unique factions, and war it out. Replayable.

Company of Heroes 2 - it's been nominated since the beginning of the club; no reason to break tradition

Awesome suggestions! I'm going to keep mine a little more simplified:

Dune: Spice Wars
Victoria 3
Europa Universalis 4
Homeworld: Deserts of Kharak
Age of Wonders 4

Civ6
Humankind
Lamplighter league
Dune Spice wars (2nd'd)
Two point campus

Terra Invicta
Nebulous: Fleet Command
Flotilla
Dorfromantic
Highfleet

Civ 6 - one last hurrah before 7, for me
Battle Brothers
Shadow Empire
Stellaris
Total War: Shogun - we play the campaign

Civ 6
Songs of Conquest
Phantom Brigade
Stellaris
Victoria 3

Ok I’m at Washington summercon today so won’t be able to tally things till this evening (8 pm PST). So if you get a nomination in before then I’ll count it.

I feel like a spoilsport, but I know it can be hard to keep track of these things.

Songs of Conquest didn’t come out of early access until May this year - it’s barely been a month.

The club rules do say games have to be at least a year old.

Yeah, that's fair. I've had it for a bit, but I forget about the whole early access thing sometimes. I see enough other games I would vote for that I don't need to nominate another to replace it if gets cut.

I’ll be completely honest I’d definitely play it if it got selected, but it does - technically - fall foul of the rules.

I was pointing it out more for JDZappa as it’s the sort of stuff I tend to miss for the cRPG club. I will abide by his final ruling though!

Thanks Sorbicol for the heads up. Sorry Sundown but Songs of Conquest isn't available for nominating yet. I had to wait off on Dune for the same reason since it came out of early access in May 23.

And on that note, I would like to announce the nominees! Please vote for your top FIVE by Thursday, June 28. We'll then spend the weekend selecting the winner by ranked choice voting:
