GWJ Strategy Gaming Group Main Thread

Something I've been thinking about doing recently is going back and playing through the early Sid Meier's Civilization games and seeing how they evolved prior to Civ 5, which is a much different game. I've never played the original (came to the series with Civ 2), and played very little of Civ 3 since it came out while I was in college. The release of Civ 4 is really what got me back into gaming after college. Anyway, with that in mind I'd like to nominate Sid Meier's Civilization: The Tile-Based ones. Games of Civ 4 an run a little long, but I wouldn't be surprised if each of the others can be completed in an evening or so.

Civ 1: Playable via Internet Archive if you don't have a local copy
Civ 2: This would be the hardest one, though the Civ Fanatics forum has incstructions for getting it working on Win10. The Internet archive has an ISO and I recently discovered that a PCEM Win98 box will actually play the redbook audio from the ISO, which I've never gotten to work with any other method. For years this was my white-whale for gaming since Civ 2 is what really got me into computer gaming.

Side note -- why aren't these first two games available on GOG or something?

Civ 3: Steam/GOG. Often on sale for ~$1.25
Civ 4: Steam/GOG. Often on sale for $5

Others:
I'll second Northgard and Invisible, Inc.

That's a good idea! If we're considering classic Civ games, I'd add Alpha Centauri, which is mechanically very similar to Civ 2, available on GOG, and gets my vote for "best 4X game ever made" .

I agree with you on SMACs place in the history of 4x games. I considered including it, but 1) 4 games is already kinda a lot and 2) SMAC really should have its own slot in this game club. It benefits from repeat play-throughs with the different factions in a way that the other early Civ games don’t. IIRC, Civ 3 starts to have some minor faction differentiations but it wasn’t until Civ 5 that they really leaned into it.

Just to clarify, are there versions of these Sid Meier games that work well without extra mods? That’s one thing I want to avoid. AC sounds fantastic though since I didn’t get far with it the first time around, mostly because I was too busy moving cross country.

I think 2 is the only one that's difficult. Civ 1 is just dosbox running through internet archive. Civ 3 and Civ 4 are on Steam (or GOG).

Though now that you mention it, I haven't fired up Civ 3 or 4 anytime recently, so I dunno if recent Win10 updates have broken it. Since I'm planning to do this anyway, I'll install them in the next few days and give them a try.

Edit: Tried it out and both Civ 3 and Civ 4 (Beyond the Sword executable via Steam) ran fine. Started a game in both and played a handful of turns. Civ 3 was pretty small on an ultra-widescreen monitor, but was playable.

Whoops Phantom Brigade is EA. Gonna pull that from my list.

Sid Meier's Civilization VI
Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri
Into the Breach
Invisible, Inc. - Beat this on Beginner a few years ago, would love to revisit it on a more challenging mode!
Northgard

Since I haven’t been on this, I’m going to make the cutoff this evening at midnight EST. At that point I’ll tally up the top 10 and we move to semi final vote.

My votes are:

Total War Shogun 2
Into the Breach
Civilization 6
Alpha Centauri
Company of Heroes 2

I posted this in the space Sims/Strategy thread but figured it might be worth posting here as well:

Galactic Civilisations IV announcement Trailer:

Good interview here with Brad Wardell with the Explorminate guys too:

Do we know what we're voting for yet this round?

Has Wardell cleaned up his act yet?

As far as I know. I think his main accuser was also found to be non-credible/withdrew their accusations. but I wouldn’t quote me on that.

Interesting. Thanks.

nvm

Here are the nominated games. (I've also included votes for games that received multiple nominations.)

PP isn’t in early access. It’s been full release for over a year now.

Ah, I confused it with Phantom Brigade. And I even have a current game of PP going... My mind is going, Dave. I can feel it.

Into the Breach
Phoenix Point
Company of Heroes 2

Into The Breach,
Phoenix Point,
Twilight Struggle

Yes -- Stars in Shadow was one of my original nominations.

Voting:

Alpha Centauri
Stars in Shadow
Total War: Shogun 2

Civ 6
Northgard
Into the Breach

As a side note, it looks like Company of Heroes 2 plus the critically beloved expansion, Ardennes Assault, are both free on steam right now for the next couple of days. They've always been in the running since the club was started, so it may be a good chance to grab it if you haven't already.

Thanks Sundown - I'm sure we'll get to CoH some day so probably a smart bet to pick it up. Here are my votes:

40K Mechanicus
Civ 6
Into The Breach

I'm going to bed and have a busy morning tomorrow so any holdouts realistically have until noon PST to get a vote in. Excited to see which games make it to the top 5!

PS- Sorry for leaving off a couple of games. Like Robear I thought PP was early access and I just blanked on Stars in Shadow.

Alright here's the top 5 with votes:

Into The Breach: 7
Civilization 6: 6
Alpha Centauri: 5
40K Mechanicus: 4
Phoenix Point: 4

Please vote for your top game by noon PST May 31 and I'll create the June thread.
