Welcome and happy “90th Anniversary of Amelia Earhart’s first solo flight across the Atlantic” week! She was already the first woman to fly across the Atlantic as a passenger, and then as a pilot with a co-pilot, so this was about securing the solo record. It took her 17 hours to fly from Newfoundland to Wales in a Lockheed Vega plane that was still mostly made from wood and glue. You may all celebrate by playing a flight sim with the autopilot turned off.

The Last of Us Part II has things to say. One of those things is “violence isn’t fun,” despite it being the majority of your choices. The devs are going down the Spec Ops - The Line route of requiring you to do violence to progress, but making you feel bad about it. It’s the gaming equivalent of your mom making you smoke the whole pack of cigarettes you stole from her. It’s a hard line to walk—cinema has a similar problem with depicting war without lapsing into the spectacular—but what about games that make a statement about violence by choosing not to include it at all? The Last of Us came out in 2013, the same year as Gone Home and the first episode of Kentucky Route Zero, two games in which maturity in storytelling means more than blood and swears. For me, The Last of Us was like a solid TV series, on a par with the good seasons of The Walking Dead, interspersed with plodding (albeit pretty) gameplay. The game elements detracted from the cinematic ones. It looks like TLOU2 pulls even further in those two directions. Mark it down as a game I’m more interested to see folks talk about than actually to play myself. GOTW?

If you’re a bit put off by Sony prestige titles that insist upon themselves, Desperadoes III is a Wild West, stealth, real-time tactics game by the devs who made the pinnacle in the genre, Shadow Tactics: Blades of the Shogun. Of course, I’ll probably use the release of Burnout Paradise: Remastered on Switch as an excuse to buy my favourite driving game again. And Slay the Spire is coming to iOS, bringing this evergreen, roguelike deckbuilder to your toilets!

Desperadoes III is from the Shadow Tactics folks? Well, now I'm intrigued.

I'm really bummed out about the open disdain I often see for eagerly awaited, AAA titles on The Week Ahead. I get the impulse to focus on lesser-known titles, and I'm all for that. But lines like "If you’re a bit put off by Sony prestige titles that insist upon themselves" come off as insulting to those who actually like these titles (myself included, as you might expect). I suggest focusing on the titles you are excited for, rather than attacking the ones you aren't.

I can similarly be deflated by disdain for big budget commercial juggernauts. I like the aforementioned titles. I have a pre-order in for The Last of Us: Part 2. Nevertheless, I can say I am not insulted. Nor do I suggest tinkering with one's focus to appease others. (I honestly find that more insulting.)

Sometimes we'll agree. Sometimes we'll disagree. Let's not look to erase or hideaway that which we have a quibble or three with.

Demo for it just hit Steam, if you want to put that intrigue into action.

Surprise!
