[News] Protests Against Police Violence After Death of George Floyd

Discuss police violence, the victims of police violence (including George Floyd and Breonna Taylor), the Black-led protests against said violence, and related topics.

Cool, that looks like a 1 line fix. "CBP's authority only extends to ten miles of the northern and souther us land border."

We have coast guard, homeland, sheriffs, police.... whoever runs airport security other than the theater entrance. Seems sufficient.

Fun fact from the article I had not previously known: the CBP’s remit gives them power within 100 miles of any border, including either coast.

Another not-so-fun fact is that about two thirds of all Americans live within 100 miles of any border, including either coast.

And I’d be willing to bet that out of the 1/3 that doesn’t, a majority sure as heck Live with 100 miles of an airport. That’s literally every ‘major’ city in the US.

It's the "little" things where you see the POlice's true colors. Honestly, what the hell.

Watching the Beyonce movie on Disney+ right now. 100% discussion belongs in this thread. So much going on. Reminds me of Janelle Monae but subtler.

Edit: Ah yes, Donald Glover and Kendrick Lamar show up. This thing is good and important.

It's just so good.

Too early to confirm anything, but I’ve seen reports on twitter and facebook that cops in Eugene have ID’d a bunch of protestors and have been arresting them from their homes today.
Whether this is true or not, if you are attending the protests remember that it’s always a good idea to wear nondescript clothing with no visible logos, keep your phones/smartwatches either in airplane mode or turned off entirely, and don’t drive to the protest location. If you can’t get there on foot or public transit park as far away as possible and walk the rest of the distance.
Also wear a mask, but these days you should be doing that already.

Please don't share unconfirmed rumors. Nothing good can possibly come from that.

I've seen reports on Twitter and Facebook that wearing a mask can deprive you of life-giving oxygen.

To be fair, one of those things is substantially more likely than the other.

Agreed. Without confirmation from multiple media sources this is fear mongering and serves to discourage protesting. I wouldn’t be surprised to find out this is a disinformation campaign.

The point wasn’t the rumors, it was to remind people of good opsec for protesting, because even though these instances are unconfirmed, there have definitely been confirmed, even recorded, instances of it happening elsewhere over the last several months.

Weird that people are so skeptical about this stuff given the police’s long and rich history of exactly this sort of behavior.

OG to the rescue. Nicely done.

Skepticism is good but the govt and police are showing there is no bottom to these depths.

Anyway. 11 arrested for allegedly rioting during May 29 protest in Eugene

Eugene police arrested 11 people on Wednesday on suspicion of rioting and other crimes downtown on the night of May 29.
...
Police identified people by reviewing video footage, social media posts and conducting interviews, according to a police news release Wednesday.

It is very easy to believe exactly what you described, BUT

I am skeptical of any single un-vetted source on Twitter or Facebook, no matter what they're saying. You should be also. Remember, there are bad actors using social media to manipulate public opinion. Don't be a stooge.

The twitter stuff I’ll give you, but the facebook stuff was from a couple of people I know, one of whose sister was among those arrested.
Maybe I should have clarified that this wasn’t just entirely rumors from randos, but as stated before, my point was about protest safety, not the arrests, which is why I heavily couched the initial statement. A lot of people are probably new to this and don’t realize the basic precautions that should be taken.

All Gas No Brakes just posted a video that looks like it’s mostly shot during the Fed Occupation of Portland. The latter half of the video especially does a really good job of showing the dichotomy of the protests here and how deeply f*cked up Portland is when it comes to racial issues.

EDIT: also, the stuff with Tucker Carlson repeatedly referring to protestors as “Biden Voters” is so crazy I can’t believe I haven’t seen it mentioned anywhere else.

CBS: Amber Guyger appeals murder charge in death of Botham Jean

Former police officer Amber Guyger, who was found guilty of murdering her neighbor Botham Jean when she entered his apartment in 2018, has filed an appeal for her conviction. Guyger has requested to be either acquitted of murder or acquitted and charged with the lesser crime of criminally negligent homicide, claiming she believed Jean was an intruder in her own apartment and therefore "had the right to act in deadly force."
Although she also had a taser and pepper spray on her person along with the gun that was used to kill Jean, Guyger's attorneys argue that officers are trained to not use these weapons "when faced with a deadly situation."
