It’s a strange day to do a twee writeup of upcoming video game releases. There is no anniversary of greater importance this week than the one so many are making right now. Solidarity to all the folks on the front line of the fight against racism and police brutality. No justice, no peace.

As for the games this week—that big gap in the release schedule is where E3 used to be. Over the coming weeks, devs and publishers will be putting out plenty of promotional videos, next-gen console announcements, and whatnot.

Command & Conquer Remastered Collection bundles up Tiberian Dawn and Red Alert, plus all their expansions. Just hearing the soundtrack again twangs the nostalgia strings. This looks like a visual upgrade—nothing has been done to rebalance the gameplay—and a few UI tweaks. You can switch between the old and new graphics during missions, but apparently the devs lost the original FMV files, so all they could do was upscale them. With the additional release of the source code, mod support is official. The multiplayer may not hold up, but I remember the single-player campaigns being solid. The devs seem to agree, because they said they couldn’t remaster the gameplay without breaking the missions.

The Sims 4: Eco Lifestyle is the first simultaneous launch of a Sims expansion across all consoles (except Switch). This expansion factors in environmental effects; so now you can either try to clean up the pollution or revel in the trash. Sims will have an ‘Eco Footprint’ measured by how much power and water they use, which will determine how polluted their neighborhoods get and how unhealthy they become. You can play in the polluted world with—I kid you not—dumpster-diving mechanics to find crafting materials, or you can try and clean it up with sustainable energy and recycling. There's biofuel, bug farms and… meat walls?

VALORANT, the 5v5 multiplayer shooter from Riot Games, has been in beta for a while and was discussed at length on episode 706 of the Conference Call. The general consensus is that it’s somewhere between Overwatch and Counter-Strike. If that means anything to you, check it out.

Liberated is billed as a “playable graphic novel” from Polish devs, Atomic Wolf. Each episode is presented as an issue of a comic book. It’s got a striking, black-and-white art style, and the story unfolds in comic panels, then switches to side-scrolling action and puzzling, and back to panels again. It’s a noir, cyberpunk tale set in a near-future, authoritarian, surveillance state with a nascent revolution. You play from the point of view of characters on both sides of the boot. I have no idea how it handles the heavy political themes, but the promo materials are talking a big game. I can’t imagine why this game is resonating this week. GOTW.
