Hidden Gems of HBO Max

Watching The Outsider now. It is fantastic. Super dark, but really well done. I just passed the halfway point and wonder how it will play out.

This is just a news blurb but it seems to be an HBO production and I hope it is correct.

Yeah she's been known for week(s?) I think. He just got announced yesterday.

HBO Max has every Godzilla movie ever made, starting from the original Gojira. On top of that, it has every Looney Tunes cartoon released from the 1930s until the present. And that's on top of every DC Comics show and movie ever. If you had to stick a gun to my head and force me to stick to one studio's streaming service, HBO Max has jumped squarely into the lead.

Well, most of the DC Comics stuff. I went looking for Batman vs. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles the other day and it wasn't there. Presumably Nickelodeon owns half of that though.

FINE! I'll get HBO Max. Geez.

The appeal of the service increases when you factor in all of the new releases that will be coming to HBO Max.

Watched Judas and the Black Messiah and liked it. Movie is about the FBI infiltrating The Black Panthers and destroying the organization using illegal tactics. Movie is really long. The acting is really good. Look how history repeats itself I thought as watching it.

This makes me so sad. The FBI should stick to preventing fascist takeovers of our government and nabbing criminals who cross state lines.

You'd think after losing for four movies in a row, Godzilla would have demanded a trade.

30 coins came in for a crazy landing this week.

Polygon's review is interesting, including the RPG roots of the series (?!).

Pffffffft, who needs Zach Snyder's Justice League when you got Ghidorah, The Three-Headed Monster. Godzilla, Rodan, and Mothra were the Superman, Batman, and... larval Wonder Woman of 1964.

Edit: Seriously, Mothra should have been called Caterpillara in this film.

DO NOT QUESTION THE 1 FOOT TALL TWIN FAIRIES THAT SUMMON MOTHRA!!!!

They're better than the guy who tripped and woke up Rodan.

Watching Batman v Superman again on the second screen at work. Boy it sucks. The big fight with Batman and Superman was jus so oddly almost torture porn. Batman seems to work him over in ways that are just over the top for situation.

It is so freaking bad. Watching the funeral now with the slow-mos of gun casings, a horse drawn casket...WTF?

According to the producer, the movie’s not bad Farley. You are.

“Is that the movie's fault or is that your fault for having a preconceived notion of what it should be?”

Batman v Superman Producer Takes Critics to Task for Unkind Reviews

LOL. Well I guess I will vote with my wallet and see what happens.

Ah, I see, the Nolan defense.

Wasn’t the entire movie torture porn? I mean for the people watching it.

If you’ve read The Dark Knight Returns, which is the book that the movie is so very loosely based on, it’s even more obvious how much the writer/director failed. Just doing a straightforward two hour movie treatment of the book should have been a no-brainer.

I'd give real money to watch someone tell Zak "We all understood what you intended with 'Martha,' Zak, you get mocked for it because it was a dumb intention."

Give that credit to the writers too.

Sigh. Once again, some of us earnestly, genuinely love it - in large part because of its overwrought, excessive drama.

Anyway, Cavill was a fine Superman. Man of Steel was a worthy reinterpretation of the Superman mythos. And, Affleck was the best Batman since Nick Cage in Kick-Ass.

I need to make time to watch the Director's Cut of BvS. The story they were trying to tell had real potential and I'm curious to see if the longer runtime let them get any closer to succeeding with it.

I actually think most of the casting DC has done has been good. It's the execution.

I watched Batman: Mask of the Phantasm, the 1993 theatrical Batman The Animated Series movie. So good! I remember seeing it in theaters when it was released, and, although I haven't seen it since then, I was surprised how much of it was still stuck in my brain, particularly Joker's whole base at the world's fair "world of tomorrow" setup. My strongest memory of seeing the movie was, thinking myself a very mature 11 year old, being super embarrassed to see little kids show up to the showing I was at wearing rubber Batman masks, making me worry that this is a movie for little kids that I should be embarrassed to be seeing, but then by the end of the movie being like nah, that ruled, I don't care if little kids were here or not. Still the correct opinion!

After listened to a fascinating panel discussion about the movie, I really want to watch Judas and the Black Messiah. I’m just afraid it might be too much of a bummer for me right now. I’m a little emotionally fragile. Instead, for this week’s Black History Month selection, I’m considering a short Will Smith film festival. It seems like a bunch of Will Smith movies is a weak ass selection for BHM, but I really don’t want to fall into another few weeks of depressive funk.

Did you watch One Night in Miami?

I watched Judas and the Black Messiah and thought it was great! Not exactly uplifting, of course, and there's a difficult scene at the end. I was also very surprised by the note at the end of the movie and kind of want to know more about that story. In any case, great acting and beautifully shot, really interesting color palette to it.
