Hidden Gems of HBO Max

Harley Quinn coming in November!

Awesome!

And this, in December:

Between Kite Man and Bane, and Deadpool and everything, it's been a real banner week if watching jokes get f*cked into the dirt and back is your thing.

We got lots of fresh ideas out here in comics town!

Is anyone having issues with subtitles in Max?
Yesterday I tried to watch Industry's season 3 episode 1 and it had exactly zero subtitle options.

First two episodes of American Have I Got News For You are bangin! Haven't laughed so hard at anything comedic as I have the last couple weeks.

Not sure if this applies everywhere else, but around here Uzumaki is being released through Max.
It's a small horror anime with only the first of 4 episodes out. It's about a town being haunted by a symbol.
The 1st episode was really good and one of its horrible images has been seared into my mind for a long time, I fear. Joy.
If you like this kind of stuff, jump on the fun train.

Uzumaki is a classic from Junji Ito and I like how they've been doing the adaptation thus far, intertwining the various chapters into a single episode at a time. Good and spooky, perfect for the season.

It's like if you opened the manga and all of a sudden it animates itself.

Edit: If you want more of this art and story style, I highly recommend picking up WORLD OF HORROR for Steam and consoles.

Oh, yes. The art style and animation is great. Seems to be a mix of 2D with 3D.

Right! I remember having the distinct thought of "The way they've captured & animated Ito's detailed linework is impeccable". Definitely using 3D renders for the animation but they've used it quite well.

Kirie should go into town, buy the Ritual Dagger at the store, take baths and refill her water bottle in case the bad water event triggers, and stab the crap out of everything she runs into.

Episode 1 of The Franchise is frickin hilarious.

Oh no.
Well, I'm now preparing myself mentally before I watch episode 2. Maybe it won't hit as hard.

To be fair, I didn't notice anything wrong but I may be a poor judge of that.

+1 - seemed fine to me

Did you check the comparison videos?
It's like night and day.

At most I noticed something weird about the running animation during the lovers pursuit, but I attributed that to the characters trying to run on sand. Otherwise, Ep. 2 still managed to convey the creepy I needed from it.

I dunno, my blissfully unaware rear end is still having an alright time.

I just watched it. It really is a huge downgrade animation wise. It's like a different show to me.

Regarding Uzumaki: I felt the downgrade in Episode 2, but it became quite jarring in Episode 3, which to keep it 100 felt cobbled together from sequences they were able to finish and seemed quite obviously mashed multiple issues of the manga together (which I have not read). The imagery remains striking, big duh, but there was a bit of monotony to Ep 3--Kirie gets menaced by monster, last second intervention, everyone seems to "reset" after weird events--that I thought was a bit too conventional based on what the previous 2 episodes were doing.

Dune: Prophecy Spoiler-Free Review

Anyone watch Dune: Prophecy? How was it?

Watching it now and it seems good.

Loved it!

Really liked Dune. Didnt know much about the Bene Gesserit before this. Great acting, excellent fx, very stylish sets. Looking forward to next episode.

Agreed. It was a really strong first episode.

In the first episode, the Emperor makes reference to "the gods," yet the Orange Catholic Bible is expressly monotheistic in the Abrahamic tradition. Literally unwatchable.

This is the most praise Brian Herbert and Kevin J. Anderson have gotten in 20+ years of this site's existence.

Dune: Prophecy Season 1, Episode 2

Imagine having zero experience with Frank Herbert's work in his later novels or Brian and KJA's work and wondering, "Why is almost as much nudity and sex in Dune now as Game of Thrones?"
