Hidden Gems of HBO Max

And here I was going to rewatch Dune Part 1 in preparation for the movie... not available.

It's on Netflix Hulu.

Yeah I was about to say, it got suggested to me the other day on Hulu but i didn't have 2.5 hours free.

I assume this is a non-US thing. Both Part 1 and Lynch Dune are available from what I can see.

The Regime:

I don't know if this is going to do for European authoritarianism what Succession did for American capitalism, but I'm on board just for Kate Winslet.

I'm actually surprised it is on any service. Lots of movies these days will disappear off streaming a month or so out so that if you want to catch up, they make you buy it.

Around here it's on Prime now. A colleague told me he watched it on HBO Max just last week.
My hate for streaming platforms grows only stronger...

Interesting. My son and I just watched it last night on Max. Strange.

Still there for me on Max

All of these things have different libraries depending on country/region yall.

Yeah, regional differences.

Except Usenet, it is the same everywhere.

If it hasn’t been mentioned already, Hacks is pretty brilliant. The first two seasons aired a while back and Season 3 is returning in May.

On streaming:

Capitalists: We havst the cable box and we shalt have peace

"Disruptive" Tech: We shalt show thou what is up, O great hegemon

Capitalists: Thou hast broken thee accords! Give us thyme

CAPITALISM THE SYSTEM: BEHOLD. I AM.

I needed to test some non-YouTube video playback, so I turned on Godzilla vs. Kong. It's not exactly hidden nor would I say it's a gem, but it did hold my attention long enough to watch it through. The Kong side of things was fairly interesting, and the bit with Kong having learned sign language was a clever twist on the "child communicates with the kaiju" beat. The characters from King of the Monsters were nothing more than an excuse to deliver exposition to the audience. I actually liked Millie Bobby Brown in KoM, but they don't give her anything to do here. They probably should have trimmed that way back and/or found a more efficient means of explaining what was going on.

Hacks is fantastic.

Why am I just now learning that Faith the Vampire Slayer is in Banshee!?

Last season only, I think. She's not one of the memorable characters.

I’ve been watching this old mobster show they have on there, from like 20-some years ago. It’s pretty good.

Speaking of old mobsters: The Penguin looks like it could be really good. I still have a hard time believing that Colin Farrell is actually under there.

Talk about disappearing into a role …

I've attempted to undertake Euphoria, but so far it seems like it's Prestige TV Riverdale without the sense of humor. Also it's a bad idea to invite comparisons to Goodfellas and Boogie Nights within 5 minutes of each other.

I've tried that show twice. I am an HBO junkie and willing to give whatever their prestige-show-of-the-moment is a shot. It's either not my thing, not very good, or both. Enough people seem to adore it that I am guessing it is the former. I think the tone of it is what I found pretty exhausting.

I thought Euphoria is outstanding, one of the best shows in its genre. I can't recall seeing a show like it that dealt with real issues in a realistic and fictional way weaved together perfect.

Absolutely love Zendaya in general and her performance as strung out druggie interacting with her mom and sister was some of the best acting I have seen. Plus any show with black main character gets points from me. There is also a minor black actor that I love in this. He played Stran in Fear the Walking Dead. His scenes wit Zendaya were amazing.

Then the trans actress was great in this especially considering it was her first acting job. She is more known for her modeling. Just like having a black main character having a trans representation gets points for me especially when it isn't just a token throw away character.

Then they have the character Cat, a girl on the plus side. What I love is how she wasn't shamed by her body. The show played as she is big girl that would not be shamed for liking to F. Very body positive. Unfortunately the actress was fired. This why her story line is just dropped and the biggest negative the show has for me.

The sound track is great. I don't buy to many sound tracks that aren't from anime but this was one of them.

Easy 9.5 little murder kids with guns that are also drug dealers out of 10 for me. May the guy playing murder kid's brother rest in peace. I really like both those actors.

I thought the episode where he and Zendaya just sat and talked at the diner was phenomenal.

Might as well get ready to shut this thread down. Disney+, Max and Hulu Bundle Planned In Major Streaming Team-Up:

Disney and Warner Bros. Discovery are teaming up on a streaming bundle.

The two entertainment giants will launch a bundle this summer that combines the Disney+, Hulu, and Max streaming services. Specific pricing is still to-be-determined, but there will be both ad-free and ad-supported options of the bundle.

Disney+, Hulu and Max all offer both less expensive ad-supported plans, and more premium ad-free options.

The deal between the companies is significant, as a Max-Disney+ bundle is filling a niche not currently served in the market. In their announcement, the companies are framing the bundle as the “best value in entertainment.”

The new combined offering is called "Cable".

And you will like it.

It's also an admission that streaming services like Max and Disney+ are in fact unprofitable.
