Hidden Gems of HBO Max

Space Jam 2!

In the Heights is done already. It was supposed to come out last summer.

Release it now!!!

Finally got around to Watchmen this week and really loved it. I suspect it's somewhat harder to recommend if you don't have familiarity with the comic, but regardless it's a fantastic show.

It's really good. I found it a lot more relatable than the original comic of which I only watched that one movie. I always meant to buy the nice book edition but never got around to it.

I would very, very, very strongly and emphatically recommend that if your only previous experience with Watchmen was the movie, Dear. God. Read the original. The be succinct, the director (we all know his name) of the movie was, for a time, intent on directing big blockbuster versions of Objectivist godmother's alleged novels. Alan Moore crafted the character of Rorschach as an extremely brutal satire of creator Steve Ditko's objectivist philosophizing. A more profound gulf in texts I cannot imagine...except maybe letting a tedious objectivist fratbrah handle Superman.

Umm, Starship Troopers (Heinlein) vs Starship Troopers (Verhoeven).

Yes. This.

What will be the first in theatre movie that gets to stream on the HBO MAX?

Wonder Woman 1984 on Christmas.

HBO Max killed their week trial. Just like Disney+ did before Hamilton released.

But they do have a 20% off if you pay for 6 months in advance deal.

I'd like to see the release schedule for those 2021 movies to know how many I would get if I buy around Christmas.

Aww Matrix not until next Dec

I’m genuinely surprised that there is no mention of a premium fee on top of the monthly prescription. I still wouldn’t be surprised if that turns out to be the reality.

Honestly I’m way more interested in small films with unique stories than I am with blockbuster flicks. The big budget flicks have such predictable stories.

They've stated there will be no fees. The Pixar movie also releasing Christmas days will also be "free" for Disney+ paid subscribers. Don't know if the Mulan model didn't work or why the switch, but it's nice if you're a subscriber.
If you want to see the movie at home, none of these subscriptions are more than most theater prices anyway, so people can just sign up for the month the movie their interested in comes out then cancel afterwards. Pretty consumer friendly, even if I don't suspect this model will last long term.

I am going to get it I think. $15 month is less than taking my boys and myself to the $5 Tuesday that the theater used to have so really I am not losing anything by signing up.

Not sure which subscription you’re referring to, but if it’s Disney you also get Mandoooooo!

I am already a Disney+ fan boy. I was thinking more of HBO Max.

Disney+ is well worth it too.

Ok. With HBO you’ve got Lovecraft Country. It’s pretty good. Plus so much more.

Also, from what I've read, you can't just add these to your queue and sit on them. It looks like the movies will only be on HBO Max for 1 month after release. When they leave the theatres, they leave HBO Max as well and then the movie goes through the normal cycle of physical/digital purchases, then rentals, and eventually the paid cable networks.

Even though it's the most expensive streaming service, I still say HBO Max is the best value. It just has so much great content, and not just HBO produced movies & series.

Agreed, 100%.

My wife and I recently started watching Love Life, the anthology-ish series where each episode follows Anna Kendrick's character's romantic relationships, starting in what I'm guessing is supposed to be her mid-20s. I believe it was one of few, perhaps the only, HBO Max Original Series available when the service launched, but I held off on checking it out until their app came to Amazon devices because I thought my wife would want to watch it and we can only watch things on our main living room TV via Amazon Fire Stick.

My wife is a big fan of romantic comedies, and happily enjoys the most obvious, trope-laden ones, whereas I can enjoy a good movie that has romance and comedy in it but do not celebrate the genre itself. I wish her luck with Hallmark Christmas movies, but we are both happier if I do not try to watch them with her! All of that is to say that, while we have different feelings about these types of stories, this show works for both of us, and through four or five episodes, I think it is pretty good. There are a few of the staples of the romantic comedy genre that bug me (everyone's jobs are absurd, even if they may start out in suitably entry level-sounding jobs, they are all on absurd career trajectories in the types of professions people in romantic comedies tend to have, and everyone complains about being poor while their 5,000 sq ft apartment in the city suggests they are actually fabulously wealthy) but the story itself, while not groundbreaking or completely unpredictable, is not so obvious and cookie-cutter as to be irritating. It's worth checking out if this is the kind of thing you might be into. Apparently Season 2 is going to star William Jackson Harper a.k.a. Chidi from The Good Place, so that's good!

I Hate Suzie is delightfully painful to watch.

As stated previously in this thread and others, Harley Quinn is a delight. Is there any word on when there will be a 3rd season?

Speaking of Harley Quinn, has anyone else been watching The Flight Attendant? Kaley Cuoco is great in the title role. The show dances the line between dark situations and humor as main character struggles to figure out what's going on around her after a one night stand ends badly. Michelle Gomez is also featured and she's great at doing exactly what she usually does. 7 of 8 episodes have been released so far. The final one airs on the 17th and I'm looking forward to seeing how this whole mess wraps up.

My interest went from zero to ten at the mention of Michelle Gomez.

App on PS5 today.

Roku tomorrow.

Christmas is saved.

Now if they can just make the app not be a buggy sluggish mess, and have some decent sound quality, that would be great.

The gift of Christmas Dune.

Thank god. Finally it’s gonna be on Roku. I have a vague sense my wife has been annoyed with me about its absence. Why do I have to make all the tech decisions? If you don’t like it, you’re welcome to buy the streaming device of your choice.
