Lovecraft Country goooood.
I thought the first episode was great. The preview of the rest of the season looks interesting. I haven't read the book by Matt Ruff, although I've read some of Lovecraft's stories.
My only complaint was a production issue. There was a bit of ADR (additional/automated dialogue replacement) in the house at the end that sounded very out of place. I'm guessing it was probably recorded after COVID-19 became widespread and was done outside of a studio. They can always re-re-record the dialogue later, HBO has dropped in edits after initial airings before.
I just learned that several scenes had references to photographs by Gordon Parks and Margaret Bourke-White.
Lttp in this thread. Yes, Lovecraft Country is incredible.
Unforgiven, the best western ever put on film, by the man who knows westerns better than anyone, is on HBO until the end of the month. It was awarded four Oscars in 1993, including Best Picture and Best Director for Eastwood, who produced, directed, and played the lead character. His performance also got a Best Actor Oscar nomination. Screenwriter David Peoples’ original screenplay was awarded best screenplay by the LA Film Critics and National Society of Film Critics, and was also nominated for an Oscar.
I’m not particularly fond of westerns, but Unforgiven is one of my favorite movies. It is full of memorable characters, gorgeous cinematography, and outstanding acting and direction. Watch it on HBO before the end of the month, or rent it later. You won’t regret it.
Binged all of Harley Quinn. First dc cartoon I really liked.
I just want to hug Bain.
I watched the first episode of Lovecraft Country and it is practically perfect in every way.
I mean... Jackie Robinson is a superhero who fights C’Thulu? I loved that!
I was always partial to Tombstone, but I admit I haven’t seen Unforgiven in at least 15 years. I probably should watch it again. Wyatt Earp is good too.
Lovecraft Country continues the awesome in ep 2. I was super bummed about one of the deaths but I cheered others.
Oh Sinnerman, where you gonna run to?

Agreed, but given what's transpired, I'm not discounting the possibility of him returning later in one form or another.
Oh, I forgot to post that episode 2 of Lovecraft Country is stunning, continuously horrifying, and absolutely incredible. It's like I finally GET Lovecraft now, which is absolutely hilarious. I was always an observer, I've been to the Lovecraft Film Festival in Portland a couple times and watched a bunch of Lovecraft related stuff but I felt like an outsider that just didn't quite get it. I finished Bloodborne. I like this version of that sort of thing better.

This is a perspective that I don't really see. For me, there is almost nothing "Lovecraftian" about the show so far. It's trafficking in a style of horror that doesn't seem at all related to its supposed source inspirations.
What the show seems to be trying to do, I'm totally okay with. But, it's not doing it well. There were so many moments of awkward pacing and deflated tension in episode 2.

Like the book, it’s not really going for straight Lovecraftian horror. There’s a lot of supernatural stuff but very little actual horror in the novel and what there is the characters approach in the very matter-of-fact way of people used to regularly facing everyday monsters. It’s more about subverting the racist aspects of the Lovecraft Mythos than actually being Lovecraftian Horror.
Yeah I think the thing I like most about Lovecraft Country is that it seems to have Jordan Peele's fingerprints all over it. I don't know if that's because of the source material or because of his influence... Hell I don't even know what his day to day involvement is with the production. But it very much reflects his sensibilities: freaky otherworldly stuff mixed with freaky very worldly stuff, and am unflinching view of how horrible humans can be towards each other.
"Horrific discovery of a monstrous legacy," "insane cultists," "remote, forgotten towns full of ominous locals who threaten to turn hostile on outsiders at any moment," yeah, not very Lovecraft at all.
It’d be great if we could put things like character’s deaths in a spoiler tag so that people like me who haven’t yet seen the most recent episode don’t read it.
Totally agree.
Look, I do my best to be considerate about spoilers, but if people are going to complain when I say I was bummed that someone in a show called "Lovecraft Country" died, I don't know how to respond to that.
I didn't reveal anything about who died except to say that one death made me sad and others made me happy. Deftly used a spoiler tag.
Is it also a spoiler to say there were supernatural monsters? How are we supposed to have any kind of discussion whatsoever about the show?
I'm trying not to be a jerk, but it'd also be nice not to call out nonspecific statements as spoilers.

I am not trying to be a jerk either, but alternatively, you could just respect others and accommodate them(noting that this is a non-spoiler thread) and spoiler part of your post instead of passive aggressively throwing your hands up and being frustrated at their frustration? A show about monsters and magic - not a spoiler. Saying there was a death after the 2nd episode, yah, that is spoilercraft country.
I’m not passive aggressively throwing my hands up, I’m aggressive aggressively throwing my hands up. I’m well aware this is not a spoiler thread. That is why my post contains zero spoilers about the deaths in episode 2.
There were deaths in episode one, also. I would venture to guess there will be deaths in every goddamn episode.
I’m sick of being labeled an insensitive lout when I don’t acquiesce to ridiculous requests. I don’t like being labeled an evil spoiler after I go out of my way not to spoil something.
A passive aggressive response would be me dropping an actual inconsequential pseudo spoilery detail about the episode. This is me being angry. I have stopped trying not to be a jerk because there is no room for compromise or discussion in this discussion. My reasonable difference of opinion about what constitutes a spoiler doesn’t matter, because the self appointed arbiter of spoilers has spoken.
Ok man, you be you and have a pleasant evening.

This community, which I adore, has had this conversation many times. There has been no name calling or blaming thus far, and I hope we can keep it that way.
This is the only “social” web forum that I participate in, so I’m not sure how many of them have an actual spoiler button, but WE do. It’s super easy to use and not at all inconvenient. I love you all. Can we please agree to use the spoiler button for even the minorest and mildest of spoilers?
I’m not angry or upset. Just a little disappointed. I really didn’t want to know that there was a death in episode 2, but it’s not a big deal.
Two episodes into raised by wolves. It feels fun but I have no attachment to it yet. I am just curious what the story will be.
Class Action Park is worth watching. John Hodgeman does the narration.
Two episodes in, The Vow is also good.
Neither reach the insane majesty of Tiger King, but they're solid.
I loves me some John Hodgeman.
Raised by Wolves is, by far, the most 40k thing I've encountered outside of the 40k universe. It's pretty great, but not at all what I was expecting.
It's so much weirder than the blurb descriptor on HBO Max.
The more Raised by Wolves episodes I watch, the less interested I am. It seems with each episode there is more discussion about doing stuff and less actual doing stuff.

I'm Hobbes2099 and I aprove this message.
We have gotten pretty delicate about what constitutes a spoiler.
