Welcome folks, and happy “53rd Anniversary of the debut of Are You Experienced?” week! You may all celebrate by remembering that Jimi Hendrix got his start playing for Little Richard—at least until he was kicked out for feeding back and playing guitar with his teeth too much.

Super Mega Baseball 3 is the standout this week. Don’t let the cartoonish graphics and bat-smashing animations fool you, this is a really crunchy baseball simulator with an equally crunchy management layer on top. The upside of not having licensed, real-life teams is that the devs can lean hard into customisation. You create your own teams and players, with their own traits and appearances. In the new Franchise Mode, players’ stats and traits will evolve over time and across multiple seasons. Get ready for some Crusader Kings-style choices; for example, your best hitter could get a niggling knee injury and never be fully fit again. Do you spend resources to get them to 75% of what they once were, or marry them to the Countess of Aquitaine develop someone else instead? Established SMB fans will be happy to have a post-release patch that will let you import teams and leagues from SMB2. As far as the on-field mechanics go, base-stealing and pickoffs are improved, bringing them more into the game.

You can endlessly tweak the rules and difficulty sliders, too, depending on whether you want a leisurely slug-fest or something more testing. There’s also crossplay across all platforms. If you like baseball or just good sports games, there’s a game mode in here for you; heck, in Franchise Mode, you can just watch any game in the fixture, from the stands. That feature may have seemed redundant a few months ago.

If SMB3 doesn’t do it for you, you’ve got remastered Halo 2 on PC and the Star Wars pod racer game from a long time ago. Otherwise, there’s a bunch of arcade-style games on the consoles, or you can dip into the vagaries of the indie Steam releases.

Here's the list, now in release-date AND alphabetical order!

Super Mega Baseball is the closest thing we have to Power Pros / Jikkyō Powerful Pro Yakyū nowadays. The Power Pros games on Wii were a great game of baseball with a fun sim side packed in. You're getting a bit of that here.

I'm sorry SMB3 cannot be anything but Super Mario Bros 3.

Try SMBb maybe?

Also tempting to double dip on Dungeon of the Endless on Switch. Loved it on PC but only did a couple runs and never completed the first ship or unlocked any more. Seems like I get more time on Switch to play in quick chunks, maybe I could actually beat it once.

I played SMB:EI and SMB2 an embarrassingly number of hours, so SMB3 is a done deal.

I played the first two on Steam, but I think I might buy 3 on the Switch...

...yeah, I am probably going to buy it on the Switch?

Played the first 2, and SMB The 3rd is a giant leap forward, both on the field and off.

The best part of this game is that it’s difficulty settings are really perfect, going from 0-99, and there is a meaningful difference in just one notch. And yeah, that makes the upper levels more akin to Dark Souls or Super Meat Boy.

I played SMB2 at 50. I have had to drop to 40 in this game. I tried a game at 80 and was just obliterated. Also, you can set a separate 0-99 for each of the 4 phases of the game, hitting, pitching, fielding, and speed.

They have an online league component coming this summer, but it will be based on their current pennant race mode they have no for competitive online. But the upcoming version will allow a lot of customization and setting it up with just a group of friends.
