Trailer drops tomorrow, 4/30, but we have this if you're looking for any video:
There's also this if you need more vikings:
There's been a bunch of rumours about this. I don't consider any of it worth mentioning, though.
There are a few interesting things that we already know. This is by the Black Flag and Origins teams. Those, to me, are the best in the series so I am extremely interested in this. Another thing is that every AC game has released in September or October. Expect that time-frame and for it to be cross-generational with consoles like Black Flag was.
I don't even need to see much to know I am in. Their formula has been great the last two games so I am fine with more of the same.
Can't wait to see what this is, I'm hoping it doesn't follow to close to the last two games, they were fantastic but that formula is already a little stale. Id love to see something more of a mix of those two and more of the old series. I know unity isn't loved but the animations and movement in that game are phenomenal and it's ashame they moved away from that as the series progressed.
At what point does the Assassin's Creed title just fall off this franchise like a vestigial appendage?
"Viking period" is potentially a pretty long range of time, but it kind of sounds like we're dropping back into the mainline Assassin's Creed plotline, which I am all for. Dial the weird up to 11! Let's talk to Odin who is actually a quantum simulation who exists in all timespace! Here for it!
I’m super excited. Odyssey was the best AC game and one of my my top games of this generation. I just hope they don’t lean too much into the naval stuff

Oh didn’t realise it was that team. Yeah I’m much more excited now.
Maybe it is location bias. But vikings seems quite boring and unfitting for a Assassins creed.
I really enjoyed Odyssey however. But the locations are as much a star of these games as the gameplay.
Pretty sure I'll be playing this on Stadia.
Tagging. I currently have Unity, Syndicate, Origins and Oddysey in various states of completion, might as well add another one to the pile.
Trailer
Damn... just realized they had to wait on tech to catch up so they could do England.... too much fog for earlier consoles...
Damn that hidden blade reveal... That was good.
I'm in.
Due to the heavy presence in the trailer, I assume they're bringing back pitched battles from Odyssey. I wonder if the rewards will be tweaked to make them more worth doing outside of the main story.
I mostly loved the glimpses of the landscapes in that trailer. If one of Odin's ravens is your companion this time around that'll be a different flavor, though I doubt mechanically it'll be all that different.
Looking forward to hearing more about the game.
I am in but I want a female protagonist, Cassandra was awesome.
Would rather have seen some gameplay. Perfect setting though.
Definitely stoked there will lots of sailing. We'll definitely have a crow instead of an eagle too. Also, I bet the (inevitable) DLC is where all the crazy Norse god stuff is.
You can make your clan leader male or female, with a lot of other customization too. I have a feeling the “canon” one this time will be male, just to mix things up.
Some bullet points from here:
* Can play as male or female
* Takes place in 9th century England
* You'll be building up a settlement
* The will be battles and raids
* You can dual wield weapons, including shields

I love the idea of having a "home base" in games.
That trailer was pretty amazing.

A year ago I might have agreed with you. But Vinland Saga has primed me for this. That series almost felt like an Assassin's Creed game already. Aside from the art style, the trailer almost looks like it could be cut from Vinland Saga clips.
(Come to think of it, any bets on how long it will take before we see a video of the trailer's soundtrack over a bunch of Vinland Saga clips?)
Seems like a cinematic.
Are we sure this wasn't the trailer for the first season of the History channel's "Vikings"?
Edit: the shot of the boats leaving the village to head to England looks like it could have been Kattegat, what looks to be the main character bears a striking resemblance to Ragnar Lothbrok, and there was a shot there of a character that could be Rolo.

This part sucked in Odyssey quite frankly. The battles were a chore. I much preferred a tighter campaign (Origins or Syndicate) than the mass MMO-RPG-Ubification of Odyssey and I hope they tone down the abilities that make literally no gameplay sense and feel like they're ripped out of Destiny (though of course we're going to get some kind of Berserker Rage meterTM)
I'd still love if they returned to a story line with Abstergo because that bonkers alternate reality stuff was my favourite part of the old games.
Give me Vikings + AC: Brotherhood + the team behind Origins and I'm sold. I'm hoping with the new Ubisoft "Gods & Monsters" franchise they can leave a lot of the Zelda-RPG stuff in that series and have a more hardcore-back to roots AC game. I know I'm in the minority but Odyssey fell so damn flat, it's the only AC game I haven't 100%'d. Heck I liked AC3 more (burn me now, I'm a heretic)
That was king Aelfred, so presumably this takes place during the time of The Last Kingdom, which is slightly after History's Vikings (Lothbrok's kids are adults).
I am super excited.
Here's a really in-depth interview with the creative director, Ashraf Ismail. He was the game director of Black Flag and Origins. The writer from Black Flag is doing this one.
Some highlights from the interview but the whole interview is worth a read:
On a very personal level, when I was 12 years old I read a novel by Michael Crichton which was about Vikings. And the lead character was a guy from the Middle East, so you have this Arab interacting with Vikings. The story was about their journey, but I’d never seen something like that before; I’d never seen Vikings painted in that light. I found a personal connection to it, and ever since then, I’ve loved Norse history and the time period.
He's talking about Eaters of the Dead.
It is Norway and the Dark Ages of England – specifically the ninth century. In terms of England, it is quite a large map. We focus on four major kingdoms of England during this time period: Wessex, Northumbria, East Anglia, and Mercia. So for history buffs, they can look for that. It’s a large part of England, and within that you have three major cities: London, Winchester, and Jórvík (now called York in modern days, but Jórvík back then). And then we have a ton of towns, and of course, we have Norway as well.
We start in Norway, and we see the natural beauty of this world, but we also feel the difficulty of living in this barren land … so we move from there and settle in England. And then it’s about the journeys through the kingdoms of England. Of course, players can go back and forth to Norway as they please. There’s a lot to see and do in Norway.
I mentioned that we land in England and it’s about settling our people and building a thriving settlement, so the settlement is really key to this experience. It’s at the heart of the motivation, and a very important part of the features of the game as well. Every building that you place has gameplay value. Every character that you can bring into your settlement has some kind of value to Eivor and the settlement. There’s customization features for the settlement, as well.
But we’re in England, and England is hostile toward these Vikings. So in order to succeed and start thriving, players will go on raids. They’ll raid their enemies, but to raid, you need a longship. So you have a longship and a crew – these are characters that you meet in the world, characters that you go on journeys with. And there are characters you can customize and build as well – they’re called Jomsvikings. So a lot of effort has gone into your raiders – these are people who also live in your settlement.
Beyond raiding, there are assaults. Assaults are attacks on giant fortifications – these are big set-piece moments that are wrapped up in the narrative.
hese journeys bring back different things. Sometimes it’s other people, sometimes it’s resources you might need. Sometimes it’s surprises that I can’t get into. The idea is that it’s really at the heart of the journey; this is the place you come back to to customize your character and do a lot of things for Eivor. The settlement is unlike anything we’ve done in the past; it’s quite key to the motivation of the journey and to the world itself.
So it is a mode of traversal, yes. It brings your raiding party with you.
This is about your longship.
So, the way gear works is completely revamped. Every piece of gear you find is unique. You can upgrade each piece of gear. If you wish to carry the same piece of gear to the end of the game, you can. Or if you want to collect everything, that’s up to you. Everything has its own unique value. At a certain point, you can start customizing gear.
Players have this (quite large) skill graph that they sort of traverse through the journey of Eivor, picking up new skills, picking up a lot of playstyle elements to fine-tune to kind of Viking you are – whether it’s a more incognito Viking or more “get out there and throw your axes around.”
I wouldn’t say it’s drastically different. It has a different form and a different wrapper. The content is what’s really different; the types of skills you can have and the synergies between skills is what makes it much more unique. In terms of moving through a skill tree, I wouldn’t say the mechanic of that is drastically different … our concept of how to craft your playstyle, this is where the content is different.
About the skilltree.
we’ve introduced dual-wielding. You can pretty much dual-wield any combination of weapons, whether it’s a bearded axe and a sword, or two axes. If you want to dual-wield two shields, have fun! We don’t hold back from that. And there is a value to having different varieties mixed together; there are some synergies that work well together. A lot of effort has gone into the weaponry and the abilities the players has. You see in the trailer that Eivor throws an axe; that’s an ability you can gain.
In the journey of Eivor, yes, we run across Assassins and Templars (or Hidden Ones and Order of Ancients in this time period). They are part of the journey. They are an important part of the journey. At a certain point, Eivor’s personal motivations will align with some Assassin characters that we meet. So there will be some alignment there and they will work together in a certain fashion.
We do continue the present-day journey, and continue Layla’s journey as well.
Give me Vikings + AC: Brotherhood + the team behind Origins and I'm sold.
Well, two out of three ain't bad.
Count me in as well. I agree with all of the following:
I love the idea of having a "home base" in games.

So do I actually need to get around to watching the Vikings TV show and Vinland Saga? I've resorted to trying to get through One Piece as my escapism during quarantine... I'm only in the 400's so long way to go there... but not dubbed... so requires focus... which sucks for this type of anime... lol
I did Kassandra for the last one so I might go with the male this time. Unless some tells me to voice actor is bad or something. I hope we can still stealth kill a whole fort while still being good at raids/ assaults.
