NFL 2020: Draft

A buddy of Trump's that was installed into a public position said racist things? I am shocked, SHOCKED.

Who knew Woody Johnson was such a dick?

Not just being a dick, such a huge mistake; who thought Woody could do such a boner? I mean, he's spent years building a reputation, and the erection of that coming down . . . well, has to leave him feeling a bit flaccid. Still, in a normal world, he'd get the shaft here, but I guess he's got the balls to misbehave these days, come what may.

Spoiler:

PENIS

That's one way to beat the fun out of this running gag.

Penis.

So, they're doing the same thing the CFL team is? Gawd, can they do anything original? Or are they merely cheap copy cats?

(Sorry Washington fans.)

In a year they're just going to shorten it to the Washington Football.

Goddamit Legion, it is 2020! Do not post pictures of that thing and jinx us!

Still better than Cleveland Browns.

Though that image is giving me a Cleveland Brown.

I sincerely hope that, in every place where team names are used without including the city names, people list Washington as just "Football Team".

So, uh, the Seahawks sent two 1sts, 3rd round and S Bradley McDougald to the Jets for Jamal Adams and a 4th rounder.

Reset the market.

I never imagined the Seahawks would Jalen Ramsey themselves too, but here we are.

I've seen Seattle fans say, "well our first round picks always suck, so this is good!". But that ignores the fact that not drafting well in the 1st round is the problem that Seattle needs to fix. It's the thing standing between them and getting back into a Super Bowl. 2013 happened because Seattle landed Earl Thomas and Russell Okung with 1st round picks a couple years before.

Giving up that draft capital AND paying a top-of-the-market contract extension just to upgrade from a good to a great player at safety is, uh... well I think it's another in the kind of personnel decisions that has kept Seattle from building another title contender around RW that by all rights should have happened already.

It's not as egregious as the Rams because they're not in the same kind of cap situation, and the QB they're paying $30+ million to is actually worth every penny of it, but putting their draft capital and free agent money all in that basket is still not a move that feels like a net positive. There's no room for the move to produce more value than cost - Jamal Adams needs to be an All-Pro just for the deal to approach break-even value. No margin for error.

With no long term deal in place!

Yeah. I get the appeal for Seattle is that they get him for 2020 on his existing deal, and don't have to start paying him the $15m+ a year he's going to cost until 2021.

But just like Ramsey, this means the leverage is all in his corner when next year does roll around. Because if he signs nothing and becomes a free agent, he's still going to get that caliber of money, while Seattle is stuck with nothing to show for the trade. Adams has nothing to lose.

But if you give up all your #1s you can't mess them up. #seattle5dchess

That's what's crazy. Give away 6+ player years for one. I mean, it's a good (great?) year to have in your proverbial card deck, but still.

It's also happening in Covid Season, where everything feels like a complete crapshoot. This whole season could just evaporate..but those picks will still cost you.

They can still tag him, no?

I wouldn't want to play the franchise tag game with a guy that engineered a trade outta town over a contract extension dispute. That's begging for trouble. Whole point of forcing this trade is to get his payday.

I guess we're all in agreement that with all their extra 1st round picks the Jets can draft their QB of the future now?

Heard some local analysis of the trade.

The late round pick swaps are a wash. SEA is going to be the bottom of the 3rd and NYJ are going to be the top of the 4th so there would be a 10-15 slot difference. At that point in the draft, it's who-cares-ville as far as the difference in who would get picked.

Giving McDougald is great for SEA since they drop his ~$4mm in cap space as well as roster space. Don't need him and NYJ needs an S. So, also a wash.

For the 2021 1st Rounder:
- SEA is ~11-win team and Adams maybe makes them a 12-win team. Either way, there is a strong chance they would be in the bottom 8 picks of the 1st Round. I'm not going to list out all the picks they have chosen under Sneider/Carroll at that range but it is basically a Bunch of Guys. No stars, no long-term starters. Now, one could argue (as the SF fans here do!) that this is a problem w/Sneider/Carroll...that they don't get enough value for their picks and that the trade should not be graded based on what Sneider/Carroll do but what the average GM would achieve.
- Assuming an average GM who drafts someone in the mid-20's (or worse) in R1, is there any belief that player would be better than Adams? Very unlikely.

For the 2022 1st Rounder:
- The above probably still holds. Maybe.

The problem, as I see it, is that there is no guarantee Adams sticks around past 2020. Dude wants to get paid and unfortunately he's going to be heading into an environment where the 2021 cap is a giant Question Mark that is trending down. How will elite players who want elite dollars handle a 20% (more?) drop in salary cap? If Adams, who reportedly wants $14-16mm/yr is now only going to rate a $9-12mm/yr contract, will he accept that? Expectations have been mentally set in players minds about what they are worth but COVID is going to depress the rates. Right?

So, is he a rental? For a season that is, literally, On The Brink? That is where I keep getting tripped up. If you're getting an A- player (PFF has him at a 90?) for the next 4 years, that's one thing. If it's 16 games...

Patriots starters are starting to opt out of playing this year. Some big names too. This is going to be a weird season for sure.

Dont'a Hightower
Patrick Chung
Marcus Cannon
as well as a few others.

Cam is gonna be pissed. He didn't sign up to be QB of a JV team.

OL guys should be forbidden from opting out individually. They're a unit, dammit!

You're kidding but I feel like I'd hear this take as a serious one on NFL Radio or something. Or from a stereotypical "old school" coach like Schiano or Gregg Williams.

Jerruh's thinking it right now!

I was wondering why Carolina brought in a rookie punter last week -- camp leg? -- until news broke today that last year's Panthers punter blew out his ACL during the summer.

The fact that we (OK, me) are talking about kickers means that things are about to get back to normal soon. Right? RIGHT?!
