Welcome folks, and happy “301st Anniversary of the publication of Robinson Crusoe week! It’s widely considered to be the first English novel; so naturally, it contains slavery, cannibalism, and piracy.

XCOM: Chimera Squad isn’t a direct sequel to XCOM 2, but it is set 5 years later in the same timeline. The alien overlords were canonically defeated by a group of XCOM soldiers named after 80s hair metal drummers. Now, Earth is trying to build peace between its human and alien populations, and XCOM has turned from guerillas to supercops. Chimera Squad zooms past the global focus of Firaxis’ earlier games and directly onto the streets. Instead of flying around Earth, you drive around one city. In combat, the camera goes in closer over the squaddies’ shoulders. Firaxis has put the The Shield into XCOM, with a few key changes to shoehorn the fit:

  • Integrated squad of humans and aliens! It’s a fixed cast of 11 characters, which will include a Muton, Sectoid, and a Viper, and a host of new abilities and combo effects.
  • No permadeath! All your characters are plot-critical, so if one bleeds out during a mission, it’s a mission restart, not a quick bagpipe ceremony before dashing down to the armory for a handful of rookies.
  • Breach Mode! A pre-combat planning round where you can choose to execute a classic cop doorbust or sneak in through a grate. It’s a sprinkle of Rainbow Six on top.
  • Individual turn order! Firaxis calls it “Interleaved Turns,” but it’s basically a D&D initiative round.

I was already getting an itch to crank up another XCOM 2 campaign but here comes Chimera Squad instead. GOTW.

If you like your cop-show-based games to be less like The Shield and more like Cops, then there’s OMG Police - Car Chase TV Simulator on the Switch. It’s like a classic car chase that you see on the news, filmed from a helicopter, but the guy in the helicopter is actually controlling the car and trying to destroy as much property as possible before getting busted, and there’s no pedestrians getting squished—because it’s Nintendo.

Predator: Hunting Grounds is as asymmetrical as the movie: one Predator vs. a group of humans. It’s by Illfonic, the devs who did Friday the 13th: The Game, so they have chops in this department. Could we finally have a good Predator game?

Comments

Sunless Sea on Switch to support the devs as they bring Sunless Skies over.

Picross is an instant buy, as ever.

And I'm curious for the Trials of Mana remake. The Mana games never quite hit home with me on the SNES and I played a lil of the demo, so I'm not sure whether I'll ever get this but it does look pretty.
