Felix “Rubber Duck” Threepaper
Welcome, and happy “254th anniversary of the patenting of the first fire escape” week! It was a wicker basket on a chain with a pulley. It would be another 121 years until Anna Connelly patented the more recognisable iron-rail bridge stairs in 1887. This design was included in the first ever building codes for New York City, and that’s why you see them everywhere today.
The big-ticket item this week is the Final Fantasy VII Remake, but only the Midgar section since the remake is releasing episodically. The combat has been tweaked, the graphics have been buffed, and new content has been included. We Aussies got a head start on this one—it’s been available in stores all weekend—after copies were shipped out early and someone broke street date. However, I can’t tell you anything new because Squenix has been squishing any playthrough vids.
If you’re looking for a turn-based RPG that adds a few layers of meta onto its ‘90s nostalgia kick, Galaxy Pen and Paper +1 Edition is coming out on the non-Switch consoles.
I am duty-bound to shout out AFL Evolution 2. While it’s the only best AFL series around, the most fun, by all accounts, is found in exhibition or tournament mode. The career and campaign modes are janky in a thousand small ways and bury the fun underneath a pile of menus. Unless the game is trying to make a point about how the moneyball spreadsheet jockeys have taken over the game, buyer beware.
Convoy: A Tactical Roguelike is the console release of this indie, PC game from 2015. It’s FTL meets Mad Max—specifically, driving a battle truck through a wasteland, fending off hordes of other vehicles. It wants to be as unforgiving as FTL, with the proc-gen algorithm weighted to throw you curveballs. I never finished FTL, but still got plenty of good hours from it. Convoy may be too arbitrarily brutal, but it’s copying from the best, and it’s got a vibe that reminds me of the classic 1985 game Autoduel. That’s enough for a GOTW.

I like Convoy. It's a good game to chill out with as long as you don't mind restarting.
