Coronavirus Tales

And my daughter just tested positive…

Screw every legislator who passed the school mask mandate ban and every district leader who didn’t fight it. My daughter wore her mask every day. We’ve been very diligent as a family. Screw everyone who decided their “freedom” was more important than taking care of each other.

Someone quote me and add the f word for me cuz I’m not much for swearing but I’m feeling it.

Sorry man. Hopefully she's ok

Thanks. She’s got symptoms—headache and stomach pains so far. Just hoping it doesn’t get much worse. Also found out my work won’t let me work from home unless I’m the one who’s sick. Yeah, they just burned away some loyalty with that policy.

They don't have a policy of "quarantine your ass if you've been exposed to a known positive COVID case"??

Presumably that was in effect only when workplaces cared about their workers when the government made them.

Cologne particles, farticles, and other things you can smell are much much smaller than the droplets that spread COVID. Farticles make it through a mask just fine. COVID particles not so much.

Spoiler:

I just wanted to say farticles.

Exactly this. There was extra Covid leave last year when the government funded it and it ended when the funding ended. Now it’s use your own sick leave only. Or work from home if you’re the one who’s positive, but if it’s a family member, you either come to work masked or use sick leave. So I’m going to use my leave and not check my email or my work phone while I’m out.

I find it greatly amusing that you left "Screw" in the middle of it all.

On the positive side, the rest of the family tested negative today—for now—but at least we can focus on the 8yo who is understandably worried and anxious about having Covid. And maybe we can get her past the worst before the rest of us start coming down with it. And with any luck the vaccinated adults will be okay throughout.

And the opener. Teetering between just angry and really f*cking pissed off.

You just described my whole day

I'm so sorry, Antichulius. Hopefully it passes through uneventfully.

Spoiler: language

Spoiler:

f*ck your employer and f*ck the worse than useless governors, they're sh*t {sexist slur}s.

Edit: oh wow, one of my favourite hard swears too hot for the forum. I don't consider it sexist any more than dickhead which is in more common use.

Haha!! I’m dying to know what it was. You’re in Australia so my first guess is see you next Tuesday?

Correct!

Also John Howard DJs like a mad _____.

You owe your employer exactly the same amount of loyalty they have for you: 0.

This is insane. Why can't they at least let you work from home?!

Just found out a friend passed from Covid. It was actually a friend's wife, and apparently she had some underlying issues (which is why I think she wasn't vaccinated). Last update was that she may have to be put on a ventilator because she was having trouble breathing. I guess she got a UTI while in there, it messed with her kidneys, and she didn't survive everything going on. I want to say she spent 13 days in the hospital before passing.

It was upsetting for sure, but so much worse when I read what her kids (17 and 20 I believe) and her Husband posted on Facebook. UGH. This virus sucks.

I was told that since I've been vaccinated and exhibited no symptoms, I am required to return to work, and the only other option is to take sick leave to take care of my sick family...

Even my second job said to come in and just wear a mask in common areas. With this mentality, it's no wonder we can't get control of the pandemic.

As for me, of course I'm staying home to take care of my family. I've only really had to deal with a nasty sore throat so far. My daughter has had it rough, but is still okay. I think her headache has been the thing she's complained about the most, so we're treating that to help her get by day-to-day. My 4yo son complained that he couldn't taste his breakfast one day, but then celebrated when he could taste lunch. As of Friday, he tested negative--though I'm guessing it's just a low viral count for the 15-minute test to register, based on his overall symptoms. But he's doing okay.

My wife has been steadily getting worse, to the point where she's canceled her work-from-home and is going to be spending basically all day in bed tomorrow. She looks really miserable, but she tested negative on Friday as well, so now she's thinks it's the flu. But it's not the flu, it was just not enough viral load at the time. There's no way spending this much time indoors with a confirmed COVID case and then getting sick is -not- COVID. I mean, I guess there -is- a way, but very improbable, particularly since there's basically no vector where the flu would have spread to us since we're all quarantining.

I'm just grateful we are all still well enough to be at home. And for the vaccine that's keeping me at least upright so I can take care of the rest.

A lot of places do seem to be giving off that message. Attention cog, come in and increase profits. As long as you do not appear sick enough to scare the others you must continue to operate the economy.

I wish you luck and hope everyone gets better soon.

More tests today. Wife now positive—lost her taste today—son and me still negative despite both of us feeling steadily worse. He’s got a cough and isn’t sleeping through the night. I’m now basically wiped energy-wise, short tempered, achy, and feeling generally crummy. It’s reminiscent of the 2nd vaccine dose that knocked me down for a day. But still a negative test so I technically could go into work—even the local health department that called today and issued our formal, verbal isolation order for my daughter said that I could go into work or go shopping or whatever as long as I mask. Even though my wife is a breakthrough infection from her vaccine and I’m certain my vaccine is all that’s holding a far worse infection for me at bay. But, you know, freedom and “the economy” and all that.

That is so unconscionable. Even with a negative test, you are probably carrying viral load that could contribute to other's infection. Even if it is just a remote possibility, the penalty is serious illness or death down the line. How is that worth it?

It would be one thing if you were known to have contact with an infected person. It is an entirely different scenario when you are living with a known positive(s).

My 4yo son took a sharp turn for the worse today. He went from mostly okay this morning to curled up in his bed by afternoon, barely eating or drinking by mid-afternoon, just wanting to be with held or with his dinosaur books and blanket. Fever started in the afternoon, and he's sleeping in bed with his mom tonight so she can keep a closer watch on him during the night. He's been tested negative like 4 times now in the past week and a half, but it's probably a foregone conclusion that tomorrow morning's test will be positive. I'm just really worried for him as it hit fairly suddenly and rapidly. And if this is just the beginning, he might be worst out of all of us, which is just awful to think about, but we can't know that or anything yet--or so I keep trying to remind my spiraling-mind. He's with his mom tonight, so I'm 15 minutes away if anything does happen, and not being able to just check in on him is the hardest thing.

He was sick a few weeks ago, and I wasn't worried once we knew it wasn't COVID. But now that we basically know this is, I'm all sorts of terrified. I know the stats are in our favor that he'll be okay, but I also know the vast array of poor to awful outcomes, and I'm trying really hard to not dwell. I distracted myself watching Shyamalan's Old tonight (meh? it was okay-ish). But it got me through a couple of hours. Now to try to sleep. Or at least to play my Switch in bed until my eyes can barely stay open? Not really sure what else to do, cuz my mind just keeps running through scenarios and I'd rather my subconscious take that on right now, thank you very much.

COVID sucks, and all the R leaders of my state suck, too. All of this is on them.

Oh, and as for my daughter's school (where she caught it), they hit the 30 case threshold to initiate a school-wide "test to stay" where you have to test negative to return. They found another 32 cases from that (so in this case, cases were actually double of what was being reported, simply because they weren't being identified). And in the first 2ish days after the test-to-stay, another 6 positive cases turned up.

I hate this all so much...

You're doing everything you can for the kids. That's all you can do.

If he keeps testing negative for COVID, you should keep yourself open to the possibility it is not COVID. I agree with your assessment that it probably is given all the variables, but it is always best to keep all the possibilities considered.

I hope he gets better soon.

We are pulling for you and your son Antichulius. Good luck.

Thanks all. He woke up today throwing up, but Covid test was yet again negative. So we got him through the day with fluids and crackers and he was a little better by bedtime. He was playing again, at least. No idea what or where he caught that or if it was some food thing, maybe. But hopefully he’ll stay on the mend tomorrow. And at least I’ll sleep better tonight.

Meanwhile, my wife’s cough has gotten so bad that blood vessels in her eyes ruptured and cough suppressant and cough drops aren’t helping, and I’ve developed a mild but persistent cough of my own that I hope doesn’t get any worse—especially after hearing her talk about hers.

Can you order from Amazon or whatever a filter that kills COVID? I worry that you are cycling small amounts of the virus amongst yourselves, repeatedly. Obviously this filter would also work for non COVID ailments as well. Your family's symptoms sound outside the norm and serious.
