Bloody Rally Show - The Love Child of Carmageddon and Death Rally

Pages

So I'm perusing Steam's new releases -- as I do ALL THE TIME -- and I came across this game:

https://store.steampowered.com/app/9...

Now I love me a top-down racer, have ever since they existed, but a lot of them fall a bit flat for me for some reason. Either they're too tough or too low on content or don't have enough variety in their races, etc etc.

This one though, it hit a lot of boxes for me. Procedural generation? Check. Violence? Check. Weapons? Check. Kinda arcadey physics? Check. Editors for more content? Check.

So I bit the bullet and bought it sight unseen.

It might be my new favorite racing game ever.

So sure, you have races, but there are pedestrians in these races trying to get a good view of the cars as they pass, so they're bound to be...collateral damage. Also they fill up your nitro booster...and are ammo for the exploding pedestrian cannon weapon.

Also you can enter a race as a pedestrian to get money and XP (because you just bought a new car and don't have enough for the next race's entry fee) by taking pictures of cars as they speed by, hopefully without getting killed.

Races also have obstacles like ramps, exploding barrels, helicopters shooting at you all, etc.

Some races have weapon zones that give you a random weapon or powerup, like a nailgun, or a shield, or a weapon called Mad Fax that dumps papers at your opponents to throw them off.

Some bouts are pure battles, some are time trials. The campaign takes place in weeks of five races, some with weapons, some without, some with missions like come in last, or take out another driver, or take out these four pedestrians.

The AI is also amazing, as they deal with the same physics you do, can become rivals and so on. Whenever you win a race, you feel like you fought for it. The physics are also perfect for this kind of game. Not too arcadey, not too simmy, but a perfect mix that'll have you drifting successfully all over the place in time.

Oh, there's also a custom race mode where you can use generated or designed tracks with up to 100 cars.

So yeah, I love this game. Love. Enough to make a new thread for it, so I do hope you'll check it out.

PS. I'll be streaming it this coming week too.

I'm replying just because I too know the pain of making a thread for an obscure new game you think is neat and immediately having it fall off the first page into the abyss.

Most kind.

This sounds fun. I will eagerly await your streamed content, as I am trying to avoid buying more games and thus will game vicariously through others.

Streaming it tomorrow, can't wait!

f*ck it. I'm home sick anyway, gonna give this a shot. I haven't really top-downed since GTA that I can remember. Let's see if this works for me. Purchased.

OMG YAY THANK YOU.

Oh and feel better soon!

Also here's a stream the dev did a week or so ago.

https://www.twitch.tv/videos/552940572

30 minutes of playtime. No adjustments of settings. No reading what controls did what.
Standard X360 controller.
It's good.
I had to restart the final leg of the first week a few times because it was basically "Hey, everyone gets weapons. Stay alive!" But after three or four attempts I squeaked into second place which was enough to win the week.

Tapping my feet to the beat, sliding into turns, getting smack-talked by a helicopter.
I'm enjoying this a lot.
Thanks for the recommendation!
EDIT: Just breezed through week 2. First place across the board. Definitely my groove. Sliding to the inside of the leader to gently nudge them into a barrier after the turn. Sublime.

Update:
Those last couple hours just melted away.
Observations: The UI is a little hard to navigate with the controller. It can be hard to see exactly what is selected. Navigating between hot-spots is a little weird. I haven't found any way to scroll the update log text on the main screen (I also didn't try beyond a few seconds)
It seems like once you buy an upgrade you are locked into selecting a race. Which is weird.
The little Tutorial cat seems to trigger at odd times:
Three weeks into the campaign: You've hit your first oil-slick! Here's what that does.

Definitely going to play more.

Yeah the dev knows the controller menu scheme isn't great, and plans to work on it. And yeah, you can only do one upgrade per race for some reason.

So glad you're enjoying it though!

Just completed my first season. I ended a couple thousand shy of what I need to buy my freedom. Season two begins.

So many great little moments.
Getting knocked sideways into a slide that takes out 11 pedestrians.
Bumping a ramp right before an opponent hits it and watching them fly miles off course.
Getting utterly wrecked and farting oil-slicks (I'm pretty sure that happened!)
Driving in a thunderstorm.
Being bribed to drive with different camera settings.

Ohhhh, I've not seen the camera settings bribe yet. I heard there's one where your controls are reversed. Hilarious.

"Complete the race with your throttle stuck at 100%
TIP: Focus on steering and avoid any obstacles"

I'm grinning, but f*ck YOU!

So I made a little teaser video in preparation for tomorrow's stream.

Hahaha yeah that one is hilarious.

I have almost 15 hours in this so far and almost all of that has been in the track editor. It's really good.

In related news, if you subscribe to my Track Pack you can add them all to your game and challenge my hotlap times on the leaderboard.

Friends, the developer was nice enough to give me a couple of keys to give away during today's stream, which starts at 9 AM Pacific. Hope you'll all tune in for a chance to win one.

Sorry I missed your stream -- work called. I hope it went well.

It went GREAT. We used the custom race to pick key winners, and it was so fun.

Thanks to you, I just made a killer recommendation to some friends of mine who I know will love this to bits.

Very happy to help!

After winning season two I was able to buy my freedom and rolled the credits.
Now to never play this game again!

I wish it had multiplayer.

On which difficulty level did you win? I won on normal so now I'm playing on hard.

It has local multiplayer for up to four players, and I'm told works great with that new Steam remote play thingy.

Did I forget the smiley? I think I forgot the smiley. I'll be diving back in. Gotta max out those cars! I even turned off the blood so it's easier to play with the kids in the room. Still having fun!
By the way. Did you know that SpaceGameJunkie is Thanked in the credits?
Did you know that some rando AI jerk by the name of BrianRubin took second place on the last custom race I played?

I was in the custom game mode and ran on a few of these. Is there a special mode for challenging times?

Hahahha delightful.

In the custom mode where it says "race" at the bottom click on it until it says something like "time trial" or "hot lap" (I forget which). Then you'll run the track on your own in a fixed setup car to try to set fast times and it'll show you a leaderboard that you can flip between Global and Friends only.

For all my time trials I'm using the third car from the left - the first Tatsuya that looks like a fake Subaru.

Found it! Posted a few times. Great job on those tracks! My favorite so far is Stabaek. Drifting the whole way!

Stabaek is a favorite of mine.

Well...

I ran 5 laps. After the first lap I was chasing my own ghost. That track sang to my bones and we made sweet music together until the rubber burned.

Please don't go faster.
