Animal Crossing: New Horizons

My airport gates are open for an hour or so, come take some pears and please leave behind some other fruit.

I'll try and leave the gate open again when I get home from work.

Fireball island made. A few tools made. Now to sleep and work tomorrow.

Got our island made. Oranges.

Had to remake once. Just two awful villagers, chicken and hamster. When putting up tents they annoyed my wife and I. Reset and got a cat, and the same hamster. But at least cat. Decided we'd wasted enough time and one cat is a start.

Both times I had 1 of the 4 island choices with 2 waterfalls. Tried that both times.

Peaches on my island. Gonna sleep on what to name it. Got a sheep and elephant for buddies. Seem cute enough. Didn’t even think about rerolling, and I picked their tent spots anyway

My first AC game, ever, but I think I get it—I weeded way more than I picked up wood for the first fire.

Question: when I pick the name will it be “abc” island? Or just “abc”?

Oranges on my island, but I have no idea how any of this works for online stuff yet... and I have no idea where to even see my friend code yet. XD

Ok, can someone give me the elevator pitch for this game? I see people talking about pears, oranges... and people not being happy with their island companions. Is it suitable for a 7 year old boy? He's very game 'savvy' for his age and plays a lot of Minecraft (including online), but he does get stuck and loses patience with, say, Luigi's Mansion 3 for example. I'm not a Switch gamer at all and have sadly never owned a Nintendo so am looking to you kind goodjers to guide me

It's a bit like Stardew Valley where villagers are animals and had tremendous amounts of personality. It's not at all about farming, but fishing, catching bugs etc. It's all very cute and bright, and at least for me the animals are definitely the main attraction.

Can he read? The animals speak gibberish but have text bubbles. It has very little guided content and no plot at all. Otherwise the content is totally suitable, I don't know whether it has enough going to engage at that age. My son (11) certainly has shown zero interest in it .

I got a bird (Plucky) and a frog (Cousteau) who seems to bit of a athlete as he suggested we name the island Awesome Biceps.

I'm quite confident that when you name the island it shows just the name.

Jumping in on this thread. I've never really spent much time with an Animal Crossing game because, truthfully, I never saw the appeal. Dabbled with the 3DS game, but that's about it. Most of my exposure to the franchise is via Smash Bros.

But with the world being how it is, I figured a bright and cheery game may be perfect. My partner and I split the cost and set up tents on different sides of the island. I'm interested (but maybe a little bit skeptical) to see how sharing the island goes.

So far the music is excellent, the graphics are amazing, and I'm having a nice chill time. Not my usual sort of game, but something I think I'm going to enjoy. I immediate enjoy this more than the 3DS game because the smartphone-style achievement system is giving me a steady stream of goals (and dopamine hits!)

It's been nice chatting about the little things we've both discovered too. I think this will be a nice experience

So - I got this, and its great. But..after about an hour and a half of playing, it seems I have run out of things to do? My house will be ready tomorrow and that seems to be real time tomorrow? Thats...certainly an interesting way to set up a game.

I assume its meant to be played a little every day, then?

Indeed it is.

If you want, you can go into system settings, date and time, and uncheck the sync time box. Then you can move your system clock to skip ahead. Then restart the game and play the next day.

Some people will call that "cheating". But the old games all had an option to do it in-game without even messing with your system clock. I've always used it to play event days before/after, because maybe in real life I'm doing stuff with my family or friends. Or yeah sometimes when I got a house upgrade and wanted to go ahead and try it out. But then later I wouldn't play for a couple days and would get my clock back in sync with the real world.

It sounds like they're trying to alleviate missing events more in this game. The first Easter event that is coming up actually runs from April 1-12 instead of just on the 12th.

Friend code is in the Switch user menu. Either the top left icon of your user on the home screen or down in the settings gear icon.

I'm not sure about travelling yet. I know it's activated in the airport. But I haven't went back in there since I landed. Hoping to visit others or let them visit me today and exchange some fruit.

Assuming it's like the old games, your native fruit sells for 100, foreign fruit sells for 500. So it's good to get 3 fruit from someone and plant them all as trees, and make a little foreign fruit orchard on your island for easy income. Shake trees to gather fruit every 3 days and sell for thousands of bells.

I have never played an animal crossing game in my life. But oddly enough for “some reason” playing a very low-key, low stress, fun happy world seems appealing right now.

So I played a bit last night after 12am and also some this morning and so far, it is great! I named my island Red Skull to give it a bit of a pirate feel. (Yes, I'm also playing Black Flag so hence the inspiration!) My native fruit is cherries!!! (Probably my favorite fruit in real life!). My first two neighbors are a jock squirrel named Sheldon and a horse named Raneigh. I LOVE them! <3 <3 <3

I paid off my initial nook miles debt and started building a house for tomorrow. I've also been working on crafting the different tools and catching bugs and fish. Just for those who don't know, don't sell the first of each type of bug or fish or whatever you catch or even dig up. At least for now, Big Nook is collecting them and will give you extra rewards.

If you're not sure what to do in the game:

Build all of your tools and collect materials for recipes
Collect fruit and sell (ideally on other islands)
Catch bugs and donate/sell.
Catch fish and donate/sell.
Clean up all your weeds and sell. BIG chunk of starter money.
Collect shells and sell.
Shake trees for wood and bells and ?
Talk to your neighbors multiple times. They sometimes have good advice.
Big Nook will also give suggestions of what to do.

Lots more I'm sure but that's what I have off the top of my head.

Oranges for the Island of Berkelium. Just getting started but I'll open for business soon enough.

Yeah looks like Day 2 is when you get airport for online. And if you collect 5 bugs/fish to Nook, then you get Blathers, which then starts a museum quest.

Is this too spoilery for anybody? It's all stuff from the old game just different ways to access.

Once you drop 5000 Nook Miles for to pay off your trip/tent, then you get Nook + upgrade. 5 tasks appear in your app for bonus points. And I was worried it was 5 daily or something. But I have completed 3 or 4 of them and new ones keep appearing on the same day.

Got a letter from in-game mom sending me some peaches. Held on to those until Blathers showed up and as expected, he gave me a shovel recipe. So now I'm starting my foreign fruit orchard. I still like to have one of everything for when villagers ask for stuff. So I'll want to visit someone today if possible for cherries, apples, and pears.

Looks like the Nintendo phone app has invite stuff and easier text chat. Hoping to try that out soon.

Hey Stele, my island is open now if you wanna come grab a pear and orange. I'll drop em on the ground near my airport. Would be very happy to take one of anything besides those or apples.

Had a great time tonight hosting Stele and mortalgroove. Spent a big chunk of my day weeding and knocking off Nook Mile tasks, very easy to lose an hour or 2. Looking forward to tomorrow when I can get a shovel and start planting some fruit, hopefully visit a couple foreign islands too.

I’m happy to report that the island nation of Guilder has apples.

My wife’s kingdom of Florin has Cherries.

Apparently once you've visited someone you can add them as best friends. Then you can see if they are online in game. Perhaps making it easier to visit?

Added malking after we traded fruit. We'll see how it works later hopefully.

PSA for everybody. The old money rock gave 8 resources if you hit it enough. The regular rocks do the same now. Clay, stone, iron, etc. All the resources you get from hitting rocks with an ax or shovel, you should be able to get 8 per rock.

I have wasted so many resources in the first two days that I could have used.

In the old games you dig holes at a diagonal from the rock to keep you from falling away as you hit it. Each hit knocks you back but the holes hold you in place. Edit: gif

Now in this game you can put fences in those spots to look nice. Or really any object, since you can place things outside. And have a permanent way to make sure you maximize your rocks every day.

I just picked this game up today as I have never played an AC game before and wanted to see what it was all about. Got through the little intro sequence and am running on real time now. My island of Yukihama has the native fruit of... Pears! Was hoping for something more interesting but that will do. I am running out of room in my pockets to hold stuff. Am I just being a hoarder or am I missing some kind of storage option?

Hope to meet up with some people sometime!

You will eventually have all the fruit to place on your island as you please to make it interesting!

If this AC is like the previous ones, we will eventually get more storage space in furniture. In the meantime, you can sell shells right away. Donate your first of each fish and bugs to Nook and then sell the rest unless you want to use it to decorate. Don't carry around anything you want to just save. Just temporarily place it outside of your house and it will stay there forever until you pick it back up. It doesn't look great, but when just getting started, it works to make sure you have inventory space for crafting, catching fish and bugs, etc. But yes, eventually we should be able to store it all in something in an organized manner.

I'm curious as to what that pocket organizer is that costs 5000 mileage and if that will help with managing inventory.

Bek, a lot of that is improved in this one.

You can actually place furniture and tools outside now, not just drop.

And with the Nook Miles + that pocket organizer gives you a whole new row of storage on person. I personally think you should save for it before buying hair styles or clothes with Nook points.

Also house storage is tied to house. You get it as soon as you get the house, no closet or dresser needed. It's just there in the walls hehe.

Peaches are on Gijeok. No idea how to visit anyone; I tried and the list came up empty. But I’d love to start swapping around some fruit!

Well I enjoyed Polygon's First Week Guide

It's a bit spoiler-ific. But it's a nice reference for what you can do and what goals follow other goals, and which resources you should be stockpiling, etc. You don't have to follow it day by day and rush to have everything done in a week. But it might help you not waste multiple days not finishing goals.

For instance, one pretty important construction project requires 30 wood, soft wood, hard wood, and iron nuggets. And with the limited amount of rocks, if you didn't do the shovel/block method I mentioned before, it could take you days to get that many nuggets. Or you'd have to use a lot of nook tickets to visit random islands for materials. So, big time saver there, knowing what's coming.

They also have a simpler 8 things to do every day.

And in case anyone wonders, each day actually ticks over to the next day at 5am. If you happen to be a late/early player, or want to mess with the clock a bit.

Online play guide

Bought. Figured I deserved it after completing Kentucky Route Zero yesterday under these... circumstances.

Are your first townspeople randomized? I'm already thinking of renaming my town and I just started. Wondering if I should reset.

Also, what are the town names you all have chosen so far?

DSGamer wrote:

Yes. But they might be locked to a certain type.

I got a jock and sisterly with first island. Then reset during the intro placing tents because they were so annoying. Got a jock and sisterly with second island. But the sisterly is a cat (Katt) so my wife said let's keep them.
