Animal Crossing: New Horizons

I was planning to avoid this game. I have gotten sucked into previous iterations (DS and 3DS, I believe) but ultimately became frustrated by the way time moves (I'd rather sit down for 3-4 hours once a week and do a ton of stuff than sit down for 10 minutes every day, but the game seems much more tuned to the latter than the former). And I have generally found in the last few years that my desire to enjoy popular Nintendo properties has not had a very good match with my actual enjoyment of them. But my resistance has weakened because it has such a charming and pleasant look, as always, and it occurred to me that my 8 year old daughter loved playing Stardew Valley with me and would likely love this as well. And much as I think the whole one island per console thing is ridiculous, it actually would be a nice way to set up a sort of asynchronous multiplayer between me and my daughter. Dammit, Nintendo, you got me! I'm in.

I plan to buy this digitally. Is there any reason not to just pre-order this through the Switch store? Are there any retailers selling digital codes that are offering discounts or other bonuses for ordering from them?

No, no discounts or specials as far as I know atm.

I generally use Raise.com for gift card codes. It saves a few bucks (sometimes more than a little). (If you're new , use my referral link! We both get money.)

45 minutes hands on

From the beginning, Animal Crossing: New Horizons feels different. Historically, Nintendo’s life-sim series almost always starts the same: plunking your human character down into a quaint town populated by animals. New Horizons, instead, begins with an information desk. Your character is peppered with questions by adorable raccoons Timmy and Tommy Nook, asking you all kinds of questions about something called a “Nook Getaway Package.” You’ll be asked where you live, whether you want to visit the northern or southern hemisphere, and to present your passport photo (a cleverly disguised character creator). You even get to pick from a series of four randomly generated island layouts. Just two minutes in, the game already feels much more involved than its predecessors.

Thanks, Garion. That’s vague enough to read like it’s a one time thing. With manual save transfers it’s not ideal, but you can switch back and forth if you like.

Without them explicitly saying that I should probably start getting ready to sell my Lite.

The fine print here is going around: "Nintendo Switch Online members can only have save data recovered one time due to the loss or damage of system." So yeah, it's a one-time thing, and it looks like it's only available in specific circumstances.

I did this. My temptation to sign up another way and deny you referral money was only slightly lesser than my laziness to hunt down someone else's referral code.

That said, now that I am signed up, everyone should use this much cooler referral link instead!

Thanks. That's a bummer. I know they never promised cloud saves for every game, but I just find a few of these choices very bizarre. Allow a Switch Lite to dock. Support cloud saves in every game. But don't do this.

Time to sell my Lite.

So I guess once you need to have your data recovered, may as well move on to another console because your Switch has become useless with no way of backing up your data? What kind of backup plan is that?

The Nintendo kind.

I used your code, Garion. Maybe I'll use that to buy some Nintendo credits and get the game. I do note that there are some pre-order bonuses for retail copies, including $10 from Best Buy. I think I would still prefer to have it digitally--I like the idea of not having to swap out my Ring Fit cartridge--but then again, if I lose interest in this AC game in the way I originally feared, it would be nice to be able to re-sell the game... Decisions!

If I'm ever uncertain about a Nintendo game, I buy a physical copy. Nintendo games have a high resale values; almost three years later, Super Mario Odyssey will still get you new release trade-in values at most places that take them. If you end up not liking something, you can recoup a pretty good chunk of the cost if you have a cart you can sell or trade.

Digital was a no brainier for me. Made that mistake on 3ds certain and ending up trading physical back in and buying digital when it was on sale.

Especially since this is something my wife will play too, no need for extra cartridge fussing.

The flipside being that AC is a game you want to easily boot up, spend some time in and then play other things when you're done with some chores or whatnot. Having it digitally installed all the time instead of having to go through the horribly laborious process of putting a cart in the Switch means it's more likely to get played via the digital route.

You can always trade in a cart and buy a digital version later. You can't go the other way.

Too true

And purchased.

This is smart and makes 100% sense, but I would never get this far because I'd never actually play the physical copy. At this point, physical media looks as anachronistic to me as a butter churn.

To me. To be perfectly clear.

Someone on Twitter recently returned to their copy of New Leaf on 3DS to warm up for the new Switch game. They got this:

Yeah, no. I don't need a game guilting me for not playing.

Wait, what?

So if my wife and daughter both want to play on their own profiles, they can't?

They would need their own switches.

Well that ain't happening.

But the more I think about it, maybe a family island would be kind of lovely?

LOL they get over it pretty quick!

Some animals are just grumpy in general.

It's family fun time whether you like it or not!

AWESOME!

Short vid showing customization. They were uploaded to the OT account and GameExplain were kind enough to put them on YouTube.

A little bit like Mii editor. Works for me.

Shoot. Urban Outfitters (yes, I know) canceled my pre-order for the Animal Crossing Switch console.

Your corduroy jacket is still coming though, right?

Saw that news story. Wondered why they would be stocking those. And then who would have pre ordered there. And huh?

Sorry man.

I only pre-ordered there because someone on the Slack channel made us aware of it. I got excited thinking I might actually get one.

Lol. It's definitely weird, I'll grant you.
