[News] Coronavirus

A place to discuss the now-global coronavirus outbreak.

To be fair, the only chance that homeopathy works is down to the placebo effect, so it's not really meaningful in this context. He also believed for a while that coffee was the source of many diseases, but then attributed the same set of symptoms to fungi. He considered people's "vital force" to be the same as Mesmer's "animal magnetism" and homeopaths for over a century pushed Mesmerism as another method of curing physical disease (as well as what we would call mental disease). Ironically, that part of homeopathy which conceivably has some real effect has been largely dropped by homeopaths today...

The Oklahoma National Guard is now in open mutiny over the Pentagon's vaccine mandate.

Oklahoma National Guard rejects Pentagon’s coronavirus vaccine mandate

Washington Post wrote:

The Oklahoma National Guard has rejected the Defense Department’s requirement for all service members to receive the coronavirus vaccine and will allow personnel to sidestep the policy with no repercussions, an order from the governor that could serve as a blueprint for other Republican-led states that have challenged Biden administration mandates.

Brig. Gen. Thomas Mancino, appointed this week by Gov. Kevin Stitt (R) as adjutant of the state’s 10,000 National Guard soldiers and airmen, on Thursday notified those under his command that they are not required to receive the vaccine and won’t be punished if they decline it.

It’s an extraordinary refusal of Pentagon policy by the general and follows Stitt’s written request to Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin seeking suspension of the requirement for Guard personnel in the state.

“We will respond appropriately,” John Kirby, a Pentagon spokesperson, said of Stitt’s letter. “That said, Secretary Austin believes that a vaccinated force is a more ready force. That is why he has ordered mandatory vaccines for the total force, and that includes our National Guard, who contribute significantly to national missions at home and abroad.”

The governor installed Mancino after having removed the state’s prior adjutant, Maj. Gen. Michael C. Thompson, who has advocated for his troops to get vaccinated against the coronavirus and last month publicized having received a booster shot. Carly Atchison, a spokesperson for Stitt, said Thompson’s departure was unrelated to his stance on vaccine policy and that the governor had explored a change over the past few months.

The new vaccine policy, distributed the day after Thompson was relieved of his leadership post, was directed by the governor, Atchison said.

Thompson did not respond to messages seeking comment. He told the New York Times that he believed his ouster was politically motivated. “There’s not another reason for it,” the general said.

You can't be in the Guard and refuse orders from your superiors in the military branch you are a part of, correct?

But the State Governor has priority when the Guard is not called into Federal service. 87% of the Guard in that state are willing to take the shot, or already have, so this is politics. The thing is, as in most policies, when the Feds say "do something", the State Guards have to do it. So the NG Bureau can override this if they want to, but there are like a dozen other states looking to follow suit, so some generic policy has to be considered and finalized. They could choose to vaccinate them during mandatory Federal training, or call them up for a day and do it. I think.

Anyone know differently?

Hmmm.....

It is extremely common for people in uniform not to speak ill of their commanders, or discuss politics at all.

Surely this is written in jest. Homeopathy is not the practice of anything. Its fanciful BS. You've quoted the premise, but it's based on nothing.

Ivermectin is literally a poison that is designed to kill worms before it kills you.

I heard about this guy who forgot to take his homeopathic remedy, and died of an overdose.

Radiation and Chemotherapy are treatments designed to kill cancer cells before the treatment kills enough cells to kill you. Vaccines began by infecting people with deadly diseases. Surgery is about cutting you open and doing bad sh*t to your body. You would be surprised at the amount of medicine that is doing bad sh*t to your body to hopefully stop the other bad sh*t going on in your body.

I often tell folks that the difference between surgery and assault is mostly consent and motive.

Well, Battery, not Assault… Assault is when you are terrified by the surgeon’s description of the surgery…

Sorry, my point being “how can the loons who probably believe in homeopathy also claim to be against small amounts of poison making you healthy? They’re the same.”

Ah. Sorry for the over-reactive response earlier, Seth.

I will note that my homeopathy ex-friend is totally okay with Botox treatments. But "oh hell no!" to the vaccine.

“Hold still! This is almost exactly like surgery!”

It is when I do it...

Way to go Austria.

If only the US could mandate this without a civil war...

BERLIN (AP) — Austria took what its leader called the “dramatic” step Monday of implementing a nationwide lockdown for unvaccinated people who haven’t recently had COVID-19, perhaps the most drastic of a string of measures being taken by European governments to get a massive regional resurgence of the virus under control.

The move, which took effect at midnight, prohibits people 12 and older who haven’t been vaccinated or recently recovered from leaving their homes except for basic activities such as working, grocery shopping, going to school or university or for a walk — or getting vaccinated.

The lockdown is initially being imposed until Nov. 24 in the Alpine country of 8.9 million. It doesn’t apply to children under 12 because they cannot yet officially get vaccinated — though the capital, Vienna, on Monday opened up vaccinations for under-12s as part of a pilot project and reported high demand.

So much for a mandate…

And really. Ping pong balls?

Challenges to President Joe Biden’s COVID-19 vaccine mandate for private employers will be consolidated in the U.S. 6th Circuit Court of Appeals, a panel dominated by judges appointed by Republicans.

The Cincinnati-based court was selected Tuesday in a random drawing using ping-pong balls, a process employed when challenges to certain federal agency actions are filed in multiple courts.

Hello from the most locked down city on the planet.

As of midnight tonight, we lose all but the last couple of minor restrictions. Masks won't even be mandated except for a small set of circumstances like hospitals and aged care.

We make this change as we pass through 90% fully vaccinated in our population.

The restrictions we are maintaining relate to being vaccinated. Most employers are mandating that staff be vaccinated especially state and federal governments. Construction, childcare, etc are also requiring full vaccination. And the vast majority are totally OK with this. Pay no attention to the tiny but extremely noisy minority that may make the news internationally. We are passing through 95% first dose. Team psychopath is outnumbered 25:1.

Lucky. I can’t imagine living in a nation with that many semi-reasonable people.

I thought this was interesting, as a comparison with a (part of a) country that doesn't have a vast right-wing conspiracy media network.

KU Leuven did a poll among 1.400 Flemings, where they asked respondents on a scale from one to five whether they agreed with some outlandish statements on COVID.

3.7% agreed that COVID is a conspiracy designed to push vaccines on the population.
13% agreed that COVID is a lab-designed virus.
11% agreed that COVID was designed by the powerful to cull the population.

Unsurprisingly, people who felt excluded from society and have lower education levels have a higher chance of believing these conspiracies, and as this type of respondents where under-represented in the poll respondents the actual percentages may be higher.

Ping pong balls in a clear case with a blower or a tumbler have been used for random draws for lotteries and games for nearly a century… It’s very easy to tell when they have been tampered with.

I see you’ve succumbed to the machinations of Big Ping Pong, Robear.

I remember that, JC. And how did they figure it out? By looking at the video of the balls, right? That’s a pretty good method to detect fraud…

Edit - Okay, there was more to it, but I remember actually seeing footage on the news that showed the lighter balls going crazy at the top, while the others hovered below and bounced up much less frequently.

Boosters for all is critical, not a luxury, Fauci says as FDA decision nears

The Food and Drug Administration is expected to authorize booster doses of the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine for all adults as early as Thursday, agency insiders told The New York Times Tuesday.

The reported timeline is remarkably fast-paced for the regulatory agency and comes as members of the Biden administration continue to suggest widespread boosting is necessary to bring the COVID-19 pandemic under control.

"I believe... that when we look back on this, we will see that boosters are likely a very critical part of the immunization regimen and not a bonus or a luxury," top infectious disease expert Anthony Fauci told Reuters on Tuesday.

Currently, booster doses of the Pfizer-BioNTech and Moderna mRNA vaccines are only recommended for people in certain vulnerable groups. Those include people ages 65 and older, people with underlying medical conditions, and people who live or work in high-risk settings.

But the Biden administration has for months planned on widespread boosting, generating tension with regulators and public health experts. When the administration announced plans in August to offer booster doses to all vaccinated Americans, the FDA and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention had not yet reviewed or recommended any extra shots.

Full text:

Germany's vaccine advisory committee recommended COVID-19 vaccine booster shots for all people aged over 18 on Thursday as the number of coronavirus infections hits a new record in Europe's largest economy.

The committee, known as STIKO, said it also recommends booster shots to be administered with an mRNA vaccine and that a booster should be given six months after the last vaccine dose.

A shortening of the vaccination interval to five months can be considered in individual cases or if there is enough capacity, it added.
