Welcome, and happy “359th Anniversary of the execution of Oliver Cromwell” week! I don’t usually shout out executions in this opener, but this one stands out because it was done 2 years after Cromwell had actually died. You may all celebrate by playing a game with a grave-looting mechanic.

Kentucky Route Zero drops its fifth and final act this week, and Kentucky Route Zero: TV Edition brings the whole shebang to consoles. I’ve been interested in this magic realist adventure game purely based on discussions of it on various GWJ Conference Calls—it even (spoiler alert) made its way onto some Games of the Decade lists. I’ve been waiting for all episodes to come out, in case I feel like binging it like a Twin Peaks season. The fact that it’s coming out on consoles is a sweet bonus.

Lode Runner Legacy isn’t quite the 3D-reimagining that its Broderbund stablemate, Prince of Persia, received. It does revamp the graphics, though, and adds new items, enemy types, and local co-op. You can also play the game in classic 1983 mode, so your kids can roll their eyes at the gaming hotness back in the day. Just don’t get your hopes up with the Legacy moniker—your actions in one playthrough won’t carry over to the next.

Aviary Attorney: Definitive Edition is a Phoenix Wright-style game, set in Paris, 1848. All the characters are anthropomorphic animals, and visually, it incorporates art by a French caricaturist of the era, J.J. Grandville. The music is also by a French composer from that time. Given that there’s no new Phoenix Wright game happening, nor does it look like Dai Gyakuten Saiban: Naruhodō Ryūnosuke no Bōken will get a Western release any time soon, Aviary Attorney: Definitive Edition is it for investigation-and-objection-based games right now.

Journey to the Savage Planet drops you on an alien world with the task of exploring and scanning to determine whether it is fit for human colonization. The game’s colour palette and sense of whimsy remind me a bit of The Outer Worlds. The scanning, collecting, and crafting remind me of No Man’s Sky, which I wanted to like but bounced off of, hard. Maybe this game’s sense of humour and smaller scale of just one planet could make the explore-craft-upgrade loop more focused and compelling.

Pillars of Eternity 2: Deadfire coming to consoles is my GOTW. I love that we can do Baldur’s Gate-style RPGs on consoles now. One of the things I enjoyed about Pillars of Eternity was the interesting and quirky choices within the 11 playable character classes. Those all make a return for Pillars of Eternity 2. I can’t wait to spend 3 hours on the character creation screen, agonising over the earliest and most important decisions of the game. Apparently, the actual questing and story are pretty solid too.

Here's the list, now in release-date order!

Woot! I can finally play KRZ! My patience has paid off ... or something.

Journey to the Savage Planet has been on my radar, curious how it turned out. I like the look and supposedly it's pretty off kilter from typical games. It looks like No Man's Sky, but plays more like, well, I don't know:

Boogerman?

It kind of looks like a cross between Slime Rancher and Satisfactory in terms of aesthetics. Definitely has a heavy Unreal Engine coat of paint to it.
