Welcome, and happy “Benjamin Franklin’s birthday” week! You may all celebrate by playing an old-school adventure game where you solve puzzles by combining incongruous inventory items together, like a kite and a key.

Here we go! The release schedule is cranking up again.

There are a whole bunch of remastered Atelier games coming out this week across all platforms. If you’ve ever wanted to jump into this long-running, alchemy-focused JRPG series, now’s a good time.

Red Bow is a very Gameboy-lookin’ game, with its top-down perspective, pixel art, and text boxes. It bills itself as an RPG, but I think this is more about its aesthetic, rather than its mechanics. I can’t see any stats, combat, or leveling, just talking to people, grabbing items, and solving puzzles. It deals with themes of death and suicide in the brief, 1-2 hour story.

The Surge 2 is a quiet achiever of a game that has a few bits of DLC planned for 2020. The Surge 2: Kraken puts you onto a beached aircraft carrier that has been repurposed into a colourful, Fallout 4-ish, suburban dystopia. It promises new weapons, implants, and limbs to remove (in that they are attached to different enemy types), but other than that, details are sketchy.

Total War: Three Kingdoms - Mandate of Heaven is the first big expansion for Total War: Three Kingdoms. The devs are calling it a Chapter Pack, because the extra campaign and storylines add a new chapter. It starts in the Han dynasty and covers the Yellow Turban Rebellion, which was a prequel to the events in the main campaign. It includes new units, 6 new playable warlords, and fleshed-out origin stories for some legendary characters, such as Lui Bei. Plus, you can play right through the expansion campaign into the main campaign.

Not to be outdone, Koei, the OG devs of games set in the Three Kingdoms era, are putting out Romance of the Three Kingdoms: XIV this week. Be warned, though: the English-language UI doesn’t drop until 28 February.

Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot plonks classic anime/manga Dragon Ball Z into an open world. Unfortunately, I can’t tell whether this game is any good. Previews have focussed mostly on boss fights, and I couldn’t grok from gameplay videos whether the combat was really hard or just one big quick-time event. Not much has been revealed about the open-world features, which makes me suspect the world will be about as empty as the world of Pokemon: Sword & Shield. Story-wise, it will focus on the Cell Saga and pick up other threads from the anime. While there’s plenty of fanservice to be found, I can’t see much here for anyone else.

I’ll give the GOTW to Total War: Three Kingdoms - Mandate of Heaven for sprucing up the best Total War game in years. Here we see Creative Assembly adopting the Paradox practice of stretching a game’s start and finish lines, until eventually you end up simulating all of human history. Folks who are worried about the singularity should pay less mind to Google’s learning algorithms and more to when EUIV eventually joins up with Stellaris.

Be warned, though: the English-language UI doesn’t drop until 28 February.

Huh, that's certainly one way to release a game.

Btw, the Dragonball game is from CyberConnect2 who do the Naruto Shippuden games. Those games have been fairly popular, so there's some hope, probably.

Given that the Naruto games are fighting games, I guess that experience gives hope for the combat system, but this seems to be CyberConnect2's first open world game. I have no idea how they are going to handle that side of things, except that there will be a "Learning How to Drive" minigame based on an (in)famous storyline from the anime.
