June report:

Added:

  • Cuphead (PC/Steam)
  • Shadow of the Tomb Raider (PC/Steam)

Finished:

  • Rise of the Tomb Raider (PC/Steam)
  • A Bird Story (Mac/Steam)

Dropped:

  • Hatoful Boyfriend (PS4)
  • Yoshi's Island (SNES) - I know it's highly regarded, but I just found it boring to play.

Played:

  • Monster Hunter World Iceborne (PS4)
  • Animal Crossing: New Horizons (Switch)
  • Tomb Raider 1996 (PC)
  • Tomb Raider Anniversary (PC)
  • Shadow of the Tomb Raider (PC)
  • Assassin's Creed Revelations (PC)
  • Cuphead (PC)

Still in a Tomb Raider mood for some reason. And I will start Trails of Cold Steel II for the JRPG club soon (probably tomorrow as it's a holiday).

That's a lot of spoilers.

Also I tried to play this in June. Couldn't get my PS4 controller to work with the Epic version of the game on PC. Not sure what's up. I remembered playing it years ago when it first released on Epic. I definitely played with a controller. Maybe it was a PS3 controller back then? I don't know. But I spent a few minutes trying it. Tried the DS4Windows app. Tried some different settings there. Updated it. Turned it back off. Googled for solutions. Couldn't find anything, lots of posts about the PS4 version. Nothing worked.

So I guess I won't pay that again. Not sure I ever beat it back when, but I wanted to check and see, after playing a lot of other Metroidvanias recently. Sounds like I'm not missing as much as I remember.

June Report~

Danganronpa 2: Goodbye Despair (Steam)
Bug Fables: The Everlasting Sapling (Switch)

Planned Games To Beat In 2020

Spoiler:

Overcooked! (Switch)

Danganronpa: Trigger Happy Havoc (Steam)

Digimon Story: Cyber Sleuth (PS4)

The Witness (Steam)
God of War 2018 (PS4)
Horizon Zero Dawn (PS4)
Resident Evil HD remaster (PS4)
Black Mesa (Steam)
Paper Mario: Color Splash (Wii U)
Star Fox Zero (Wii U)
Star Fox Guard (Wii U)
Assassin's Creed: Origins (Uplay)

My plan was to beat The Last of Us: Remastered before the second game arrived but that didn't happen so.. whoops. Give me 2-3 more sessions and I think I'll have that under wraps. I'm in no rush to finish the second game though since it'll probably be emotionally taxing from the sounds of it.

I picked up Bug Fables on my b-day since it scratches the classic Paper Mario itch but I haven't been tempted by any of the steam sales or any sale for that matter. I have so many games and it's kind of been a struggle this year to have the energy to play anything besides Animal Crossing.

It's a lot of overwrought navel-gazing, for sure.

I played it on my Xbox One, as the 360 purchase carried over to the new system. It's not bad, but given that it came at a time preceding the explosion of Metroidvania indies and was a year before Metroid: Other M, it was sort of a "Oh man, finally, someone else got Metroid right!" response due to no 2-D entries in the series since Zero Mission five years prior.

Shadow Complex is an interesting time capsule of a game in that it felt so great at the time due to the lack of competition. In addition, the "story" is... really hard to pin a thought down on besides "pointless". It exists, it has Nolan North, and it... makes absolutely no impact because the player is just there to play a Metroid game.

It's still a fine game, but at this point so many others have taken up the mantle and done so far better that it's somehow more of a relic than the games it was inspired by.

How is Bug Fables? I’ve had my eye on it for the same reason.

I've only completed the first chapter so take what I say with a grain of salt but I'd say if you liked the first two Paper Mario games, you'll love this. The writing, sound, gameplay are very reminist of that. The graphics do lack the same polish and the platforming feels a bit wonky at times but nothing worth getting too upset about.

Well, it's July 1 -- time for my June Report!

Spoiler: Explainer

Bit.Trip Runner was a game that I always wanted to want to play, but that quickly put me off. I like rhythm games and feel like I'm good at them, but don't like having to constantly restart after a failure. I finally decided it was time to let it go. Spirits, I tried several years ago, and liked okay but found no real desire to finish. It's similar in concept to Lemmings, and I didn't like how much precision was necessary to finish stages (i.e., setting your spirit to blow or dig at exactly the right point.

Thanks for that! Your take definitely makes me more interested in playing it.

Couldn't finish Steamworld Quest 2 nights ago in June. On the next to last chapter and had my first ever team wipe against a mini boss. Ouch.

Needed a break after that. Hopefully can push through this weekend, which starts tonight, yay.
