With everything I've heard about Persona 5, maybe I'll get it on the Switch some day and it'll be on my GOTY list next year. ;)
That's so mean.
Thanks for doing this Eleima! And it was fun reading through the thread and adding more games to check out. This is the first time in a long time I didn't play 10 games that released in the year (mostly playing older games). I know the points were already tallied but just wanted to post my list anyway.
1) Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice (PC)
Unbelievably tight controls, uncompromising design, and when the battle system clicks. WHEW. The sensational clash of swords and intensity of combat becomes an addictive tug of war you want to feel over and over again.
2) Resident Evil 2 (PC)
A tense and purposefully designed remake that embraces its classic survival horror roots and modernizes it at the same time. And like the rest of the series, it encourages you to play through multiple times. Getting S rank on hardcore for the unlimited ammo LE-5 was such a thrill.
3) Devil May Cry 5 (PC)
Itsuno brought DMC back with a bang. Stylin with three different characters in the smooth as hell combat system is a joy. And RE Engine continues to impress with incredible visuals and probably the best animation transitions we’ve ever seen. SSS Rank!
4) Fire Emblem: Three Houses (Switch)
The school theme, memorable characters, story, and tactical elements made the loop really hard to put down. And the soundtrack! So good!
5) Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night (PC)
While the visuals aren’t great, Iga basically delivered Symphony of the Night 2, right down to being able to make your character broken. And that’s part of the fun. The shard system lets your imagination run wild and makes traversing the castle always purposeful. It’s good to have the man who put the vania in Metroidvania back in the genre.
Games I didn’t play but probably would have enjoyed:
Disco Elysium, Death Stranding, Control, Outer Wilds, The Outer Worlds, Luigi’s Mansion 3, Samurai Shodown, Super Mario Maker 2, Dragon Quest Builders 2, Remnant of the Ashes, Link’s Awakening Remake.
2020 is 3packed5me.

I would love reading about this, both to revisit P5, and to see who Eleima’s Joker would date!

#WhyCantIDateYusuke
Yusuke, notorious hottie from Persona 5, who you can't date because the game's writers think gay men are icky.
Persona 5, or the Royal extended edition not coming to Switch.
Persona 5 Scramble is however a totally new Switch game that will probably be on some lists next year
Such a fun post to read. Thank you, Eleima! Great job!
Thanks to all community members who included thoughts and impressions on your GOTY lists. It makes it so much easier to identify which games I might or might not like.
It's fun seeing games from earlier years surfacing now. Those games clearly have some staying power and I'm more likely to revisit those games than take a chance on something new. I really like having the "it's new to me this year" clause in the GWJ ranking system.
Like others I read through most of the list with the thought "Didn't play it" echoing in my head, but some of those got added to my wishlist and I'm eager to try (Outer Wilds, Disco Elysium). Thanks to Eleima for using quotes from community members in the final summary. It adds a nice touch of variety to each game's description.
EDIT: I was going to write more about P5 and the stuff that Clock mentioned, above, but the Community Game of the Year thread really isn't the place for that.
Oh crap, one game that I was just reminded of that would have made my top ten list had I put it on the doc I keep, Grimvalor. It's a side scrolling Soulslike on mobile. Even though it's pretty difficult the controls work really well.
We're more than halfway there to starting our 2020 tallies and boy, this year is going to be a doozy!
I should've known when my gaming year started off with Outer Wilds and Control back to back that I was in for a wild ride. But I couldn't have even guessed how hard it's going to be to parse out my favourites of this year. For the first time I started writing out my experiences as I played them and it's a 10 page document already and that's still with some heavy hitters and tens of indie gems left on the schedule!
My unofficial, start of summer, halfway through 2020 list for GOTY 2020 is roughly:
- Outer Wilds (by a country mile, probably sits as my current #3 all time right after the Witcher 3 and God of War)
- Deep Rock Galactic (My favourite cooperative multiplayer experience ever)
- Control (If you had told me Control would be knocked off the number two spot on my list I would've asked you if it was the fall and Cyberpunk 2077 had come out. It's the only game I've ever read every piece of flavour text for. Easily one of my favourite game worlds and universes to come out in the past couple of years. I think I like the world of Control more than Outer Wilds even)
- Super Mega Baseball 3 (The best sports game in the last decade)
- Return of the Obra Dinn (Even though I'm only about 50% completed, a game that blurs the lines between art, story, and gameplay. I think we'll be talking about Obra Dinn for the next decade as we see more game build and copy it's style)
- Aurion: Legacy of the Kori-Odan (my unexpected GEM of 2020. A stirring soundtrack. Complex combat. Rich story. Gorgeous hand drawn art)
- Maneater (Mix 1-part Burnout Paradise with 1-part inFamous Second Son collect-a-thon and power-all and stuff it in a shark suit)
- The Cycle (the first and only battle-royale I've enjoyed. Won a couple matches. Felt like I was getting better. Ultimately not enough to keep it's hooks in me)
- XCOM: Chimera Squad (A $10, 20-hour experience, some horrific game-breaking bugs have now been patched. It's the first and only XCOM I've enjoyed and finished. Well worth picking up right now)
- Minecraft Dungeons (A good Diablo-lite. I'm missing the key DLC content that really makes this game shine, a child. Difficulty spikes are kind of off putting, steam roll mobs but then get wiped by bosses. Gear system is deeper than you'd expect. Ultimately lacking the friends playing to make it a really enjoyable long term experience)
- Speaking Simulator (my face hurts just remembering this game. A goofy bit of fun that was totally worth it for streaming and laughing)
- Ori and the Will o' the Wisps (The sequel that fell flat. A game that's beautiful and very much MORE Ori. It lacks the emotional connection and just feels like it was made "bigger" for the sake of it)
this is such a strange thread to see pop back up when I look at the dates of the posts
I did just realize the 2020 Game of the Year is going to be Animal Crossing and then everything else. The only real question will be if it’s the largest gap between numbers 1 and 2 in the voting in GWJ history.
I'll be surprised if AC runs away with it that much. This forum is still very pc-centric.
Outer Wilds is a masterpiece. It defies expectations. The accumulation of knowledge about the Nomai & their exploration of your solar system is one of the most rewarding, rich stories I've ever experienced in this medium. Everything around the time loop is constructed to perfection. The mystery & sense of wonder is unlike anything else.
I've put in countless hours & I've one final journey I need to make. I need to watch the noclip documentary on Outer Wilds too!
I would love for Nintendo to make a console that I actually want to own. Switch is not that console. Their games sound extremely appealing, but their hardware is not for me.
Unless Cyberpunk is hot garbage I'd expect it to have a good chance of topping the list this year.
Cyberpunk, unless its late release means people just haven't played it yet. I could see Last of Us 2 doing well too.

It's on sale on Steam. I watched one let's play of the first loop. Pretty interesting. Was debating adding it to the pile but your recommendation pushes it to the top of the list.
For what it's worth, my GOTY list currently looks like this...
Heaven's Vault
Children of Morta
Xcom : Chimera Squad
kinda slim pickings, but that's down to not really having any money for new games AND the fact that much of my focus has been on tabletop RPGs of late.

Besides finally finishing GTA V, and Slay the Spire coming to iOS, I don’t have any memorable gaming moments this year. Certainly no new games to speak of.
So far this year it’s XCOM: Chimera Squad for me, just ahead of Civ VI: Gathering Storm. Still there is plenty of new stuff coming out in the latter half of this year I’m interested in so a case of there’s still a lot of games out there to go.
I'll vote for Animal Crossing without any interest in playing it. I got more entertainment orbiting the conversations of others, especially those that don't game a lot, than anything that has come out this year so far.
But there's lots of great games from the before. Did you guys know Journey is a thing? It was a exclusive to Playstation forever, which I now know to be a disservice to the species. It's like three hours, better done in one go, and worth rolling with.

That's great Stele! Can't wait to hear your thoughts once you get started. You'll likely have to look the odd thing up but just go explore where your curiosity takes you. You'll start to piece together the secrets of the solar system. The various planet's characteristics make each one wholly unique to visit & solve their 'puzzles' so to speak.
We need to make an Outer Wilds thread!
Currently Heaven's Vault is a clear top of the list. It's not even close. Also on the list is Mario Odyssey, Assassin's Creed Odyssey and Animal Crossing Odys... new Horizons.
I'm hoping to play Disco Elysium, Links Awakening remake and Outer Wilds some time this year, pending spare time. No doubt more will slip in there too.
I already have a top-10 list and I have no idea how I’ve done that. I’m burning through games (even 100%ing them) at a record pace. I haven’t even got to any of my most anticipated yet.

I don't know where Battle Chasers landed on your list, Vector, but so far it sits at the very top of mine!
