Hidden Gems of Disney + instant videos

All of your comments made me really want to watch Soul, which I just finished. As you friends said, it was fantastic.

Soul is amazing. Keaton (my oldest) put it well afterwards. "Pixar usually makes kids' movies and includes stuff for adults. This one flips the other direction, and it gets dark and deep!"

It is also about the most Buddhist movie I have seen.

We watched Soul last night and my favorite part was during the resolution at the end. My 11-year-old son suddenly pipes up from the couch beside me and said "Is there something going over my head right now? I feel like I'm supposed to be realizing something important, but I'm not. I mean, there's this montage and music, and clearly there is a point but I don't get it." In the context of the movie, it was hilarious.

After the government announced pretty much the whole of the UK was going into a very severe Covid related lockdown - again - tonight, it was fair to say that mini-sorb was feeling it a bit. We've been in some sort of relatively severe lockdown in our region now since the end of August - also the last time I saw my family who like about 350 miles away from where I do (this being pretty much the other end of the country for England) and it's starting to get to all of us, especially Mini-sorb who is utterly sick to death of the restrictions involved in being able to see all her friends in real life. Even in virtual life (Roblox) they can all only play together in about half hour bursts before they all start virtually shouting at each other..........

So after a temper-tantrum, a lot of frustration related tears and generally feeling pretty rubbish, we put Soul on and for an hour and half were transported into something wholesome and wonderful and philosophical, so beautifully explained that a 9 year old understood it all without need for any additional - and extremely amateur - explanations from either myself or Mrs Sorb. It was completely wonderful, and easily stands with Pixar's very best.

We also enjoyed Soul.

Is it appropriate for a 4/5 year old? I would say most Pixar movies I have seen are not, so I am guessing this one isn't either.

EDIT: Common Sense Media says 8+. Sounds like a watch for the wife and I after our daughter's bedtime one night then.

I'm still amazed one of Disney's best worst movies, Condorman, isn't on Disney+. I finally caved and bought it on Amazon though.

Perhaps the only happy memory I have of my dad is when he took me and some cousins to a drive-in to watch Condorman. I was super skeptical. It sounded like the lamest superhero ever.

Nobody told me that it was a silly ass comedy. I laughed my head off and had a great time of it.

Weird. I’d mostly forgotten about that.

What a lovely story! I wish I'd been able to see it in the theater.

I think Soul is a little deep for a 4/5 year old and not as attention getting. My now 6 year old loved at the 4/5 age range:

Cars
Planes
Coco
Monsters Inc/Univ
Incredibles
Finding Nemo/Dory
Not Pixar but wore Zootopia about out

Each kid is different, but while the movies do have parts for older kids/adults - we found them to be very child friendly and if he lost interest he just got up and left

Just finished watching Mulan. It was "eh". Not bad but didn't evoke much in the way of feeling. It is a little disappointing that the screenplay that the screenplay was written by a bunch of people with western names.

Soul is next for tonight.

I would say that your daughter might be bored, as there is not the same amount of visual energy as compared to other Pixar movies.

My 4/5 year old loved it. Has rewatched it 3 times. I am sure he doesn't get all the nuance, but he understands what's going on and likes it.

My 6 year old enjoyed it more the second time around as well. Of course some of the nuance is lost on him, but there certainly is nothing objectionable.

Edit: I should caveat that the story, aptly named Soul, does dance around the topic of death, the afterlife, and the pre-life so it made for some interesting questions from my 6 year old and discussions about our faith and people (grandfather, dog) who have passed in his "memory timeframe".

I finally found some time to watch Toy Story 4, and it was incredible. What a fun ride from beginning to end!

Soooooo, Wanda Vision is really weird. I have no context, and it's fascinating that way.

I like weird, and I like subverting pop culture. This is my wheelhouse and I love it. My wife is confused, but intrigued.

Dick Van Dyke was my favorite sitcom for a long time. I just rewatched the whole series on Netflix maybe 15-18 months back. I've seen every Bewitched episode at least a couple times. So these first two shows were a lot of fun.

But I really do wish I could binge them all this holiday weekend. I hate these delayed releases. Might have to wait a couple weeks to pick it back up.

Edit: I guess there's more discussion in the Marvel thread.

I also enjoyed WandaVision so far. What's funny is I just started watching old episodes of Dick Van Dyke on Hulu this week, so I could see how much the set, and the plot, in the first episode was inspired by that show. The second episode was giving me more of a Bewitched vibe.

Edit: I guess great minds think alike, or whatnot...

Oh for sure I get the huge nods to Dick Van Dyke Show. Definitely watched a lot of that growing up.

I just watched both episodes tonight. Intriguing. Does anyone know how many episodes there will be?

I think nine.

I think the second episode was based on Bewitched.

Nice! I was pretty upset when they stopped releasing the dvd sets after only a few seasons. I can finally rewatch every episode again.

Yeah exactly. I was waiting for all five seasons to come out on DVD before buying them. This also works!

YAAAAAAY! I bought the first 3 seasons on DVD when they came out, and have been waiting... and waiting...and waiting for the 4th and 5th seasons. Hopefully, most of the music will be intact.

I immediately launched Disney+ to watch...

... and it's not up yet.

The tweet says Feb 19, so I guess it starts later tonight?
