Welcome, and happy 36th anniversary of the release of Star Wars novel Lando Calrissian and the Starcave of ThonBoka week! There are of course other anniversaries this week, with more historical oomf, but I’m trying to keep it light and fluffy here, folks. You may all celebrate by wondering how to spell the sounds a lightsaber makes.

Shenmue III FINALLY arrives this week. Beyond noting that it’s been a long time coming, I’ve not much else to say. Shenmue totally passed me by back in the day, but some people will be happy. Have the devs deliberately put jank into it, as a tribute to the earlier games? Or will the jank be naturally occurring, because they’re trying to make a 3D, open-world, minigame-fest with an engaging story on a Kickstarter budget?

Unity of Command II is a sequel to the “Easy To Learn, Hard to Master” WW2 strategy title that proved to be many a new grognard’s gateway drug. It’s still set in WW2 and is showing off a new 3D engine. New features include fog of war (and the units and actions to dispel it), an army HQ that unlocks special actions, and a dynamic campaign that promises many branching points, such that no two playthroughs will be the same.

Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order is my GOTW. It’s got solid devs behind it: Respawn Entertainment, developer of the Titanfall series as well as surprise hit Apex Legends..

This game is fully licensed and therefore its story is officially canon (for now). It sits in between film episodes III (the last of the Hayden Christensen movies) and IV (OG Star Wars movie). However, don’t expect a tale full of moral nuances, twists, and branching choices between the Light and Dark sides of the Force—instead we’ll be a Jedi with a broad-brush excuse to fight hordes of Imperial goons.

Many previews have described the game with reference to Dark Souls, but what does this mean? Mostly, this is a reference to the third-person combat, which is designed to keep you squishy, yet lethal. You will need to time your blocks and counters, rather than spamming combos and powers, like you could in Force Unleashed. Then there’s the other stuff, like the shrines that heal you and reset all enemies in the area, and how you drop unspent XP when you die and can go get it back.

On top of Souls-y fighting, there’ll be exploration, light platforming and puzzling with a Metroid-meets-Tomb Raider flavour. Each planet contains a series of maps to get through with the aid of your Force powers.

For me, this is a perfect popcorn game: a chance to turn off the Lit/Pol Sci Major in my head, not worry about the story, and just enjoy lightsabering with swooshy noises. I’m extra primed because my Star Wars itch was in no way scratched by the console port of Jedi Outcast a month ago. Why didn’t anybody tell me you have to complete 5 sprawling, 90s-era missions before you get a lightsaber in that game?

Here's the list, now in release-date order!

Comments

Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order, for sure. Eventually, likely, Shenmue III and Neverwinter Nights (curious to see how that works on the PS4). Most definitely Romancing SaGa 3 on the PS4, some time in the near future.

Nary a mention of Pokemon? Huh

Well, this is quite the packed week. We haven't seen a week this interesting this fall, at least for my interests.

Unity of Command getting a sequel release is shocking news to me. The first game was a phenomenal package. Glad to see the devs are still up and running. Hopefully this game will be successful for them, but who the heck knows since the PC landscape is so strange these days.

Seeing that VR Doctor Who game makes me realize I'm a bit surprised that Telltale or maybe the devs behind the Sherlock Holmes games (Frogwares) never took a crack at a Doctor Who adventure.

I will, without a doubt, get the swooshy lightsaber game. I will even install the horror of Origin on my system to play it.

Here's my dilemma. I have a limited bandwidth allowance here (38GB/month), so I'd have to download it during the "free" period of midnight to 5am. The only service that has solid download scheduling and resume function is Steam. I am perfectly happy with Steam, so this isn't a problem by itself. But then I'd have the situation of having a game downloaded in Steam, that requires Origin to also launch for authentication, so that Steam can run the game.

I am displeased by this notion. Why the hell do I need Origin again if it's on Steam?

You don't. It was probably easiest for EA to keep the Origin authentication while allowing their stuff to be sold on Steam. Such is life.

Good gawd, I'm surprised you get any internet connection! I mean, it's basically military bases or bust, right?

Indeed. I'm fairly grateful that I have any sort of internet service here. I have the privilege of paying $175/mo for an internet connection that, when it works, offers "up to" a whopping 2Mbps, with a 38GB limit. This is heady stuff, as it's actually double what was offered prior to April of this year. The new Jedi game is my Christmas present to myself, as it will very likely take on the order to 2-3 weeks to download it.

Still, for being one of the most remote places on the planet, it's not bad here. The island is a tropical paradise and there's lots to do. Plenty of outdoors activities. We've converted the Malaysian Airliner into a restaurant and the passengers have integrated well here. As I was saying to my friend who works at the CIA black site next to the global surveillance station, I'm not sure whether it's harder to get used to the strangely alien technology here, or get over the first time you're pranked by one of the xenomorphs pretending to be your angry boss!

The most amazing thing though is definitel%$#%#%$#*&()*&&*&^GSDTRFDXTRWE$W$@%$^%DTFTRDX@@@@@CONNECTION LOST

I'm sorry you used up 1/100th of your monthly allocation to write that post.
