Diablo IV - Catch All

Finally killed that guy and I was expecting 15 legendaries to pop out given all the trouble he's given me. Does he show up in Hardcore? That would kinda suck?

Yes, he does, and based on what I've read, yes, it does...

Now it's probably the three skill points and all the extra attributes from the Lilith Statues, but OOF! It's tearing through Tier 2 like nobodie's business!

I found the same thing. Stuff I was having problems with was suddenly trivial.

Got my Ultimate yesterday and now even +2 bosses are falling. I'm not using my Shouts enough - they have such a short cooldown that I forget about them. I'm used to Sorcerer's longer cooldowns.

Right now my "mob destroyer" combo goes something like:
- Leap into middle of crowd
- Warcry for all the bonuses
- Charge if there's an elite or Boss
- spam Whirlwind
- Rallying cry when fury runs out
- back to spamming Whirlwind

By now I'm down to individual range mobs, which I'll pick off using Lunging Strike. If the Elite is still around then Charge when it comes off cooldown, otherwise I'll kite the boss and any minions until I'm ready to start all over again.

I wish I had some kind of health regen, but I know I'll start to get Rares with that attribute soon enough. Meanwhile my 9 potions seem to be able to keep me going.

As for equipment, I agonized over min-maxing with my sorcerer which took a long time and I ended up keeping equipment too long because one of the pieces had a great imprinted power I didn't want to lose.

Now I simple check Armor or DPS. If it's greater, it goes in. Magic or greater only. Only just started getting gems, so not really getting a lot of sockets, but Emerald (for thorns) or Skulls (for health) are my gotos right now.

Next steps:

- finish getting the Lilith statues and reactivating waypoints.
- Knock off the Strongholds.

That should get me to level 3 renown in all 5 regions. Then Barbarian specific dungeons, malignant dungeons, and whispers until I'm ready for the Capstone Dungeon.

All of which is great, but I'm traveling tomorrow for nearly 3 weeks, so D4 will be off the table for a while

Player trading was disabled because apparently there was a duplication exploit. There's a new patch, but they're still not sure if it's fixed.

Can someone explain to me, after over 20 years of having this problem in Diablo, why it is still a thing? Is it some kind of NP-Hard programming problem or something?

See.. this is why we all need NFTs

Because data on a computer can't be moved; it can only be copied and then deleted from the original location. All you have to do is find a way to interrupt the process between those steps and you have duplicated the data. If that data is an in-game item...

Sure, but it seems to me there should be a way to make those operations atomic from the client’s perspective, and fail-safe. This is not an unsolved problem in computer science.

Of course, there are costs in complexity and possibly performance. I can see that being significant in 1999 when Diablo 2 was in development, but now?

I assume robust transfer of data was a priority for D3 at launch, given that there was real world money on the line then. But over all the noise about how the real money auctions devalued gameplay rewards, I don’t remember any major reliability complaints. That could just be my fuzzy memory though.

As I understand it, and I'm a student of product design not programming, there's a tradeoff where if you make it more difficult to dupe items then it makes it more likely that bugs and exploits in that part of the system will simply delete the items instead. Going that route is more likely to punish innocent players that did something by accident. So the theory is you err on the side of protecting innocent players and rely on specific bug fixes and the ban hammer to stop dupes.

He killed my first HC character :/

Wow, the game really opens up in Tier 3.

Yep.

Unfortunately it narrows again once you level past the tier's level floor. Once the enemies start lagging behind you by 5 levels a lot of the content stops being rewarding. I think that's just a temporary stopgap until they can rebalance things properly, but it still gets annoying.

Helltides still scale to a good level. So do strongholds if you have any left to do. Monster levels in Nightmare dungeons depend on the key level rather than the character's, so that's where most of the xp is found.

Just hit World Tier 3, and I am disconnecting every time I try to Town Portal to clear out my inventory.

FYI i was having weird intermittent disconnects at the start of the game and come to find out my anti virus was causing it. I had to white list the game before it stopped.

TIL about emote statues.

GAH!

They aren't all statues, either. And some of them require emotes that aren't on the wheel by default; you have to customize them and add the appropriate one(s).

Is Butcher frequency random or does it increase with XXX? 3 out of 4 last dungeons he has decided to make an appearance.. I have no problem with him in "normal" dungeons, but when I'm pushing nightmares, he's not much fun. I'm 50/50 with him on my current max nightmare level. I'm not on hardcore, and he was my only 1 of 12 deaths, so more a nuisance than an OMG i just wasted everything, but either I'm triggering something or i'm just (un)lucky.

Pretty sure it's entirely random. I've killed him a few times now (only good thing I've gotten so far is the horse armor trophy that's his cleaver. One session I got him, logged off to get a beverage, logged back in did another dungeon and he was back. I will say I have never seen him twice in one session so either I've been lucky, or he will only hit you up once per session max.

I’ve gotten him twice in one session…not yet on back to back dungeons but I would guess it’s possible. After 12 levels on Torment I finally got the unique pants to drop to make the Necro bone spear build really work well.

Only 20 more levels to 100… I hope they reduce the XP to 100 eventually this feels like it way longer to hit max level than Diablo 3.

You mean max paragon? Because max level could be done in a couple hours in D3

I'm sure there are reasons, probably scaling related, that D4 characters go from 1-100. But a part of me thinks they should have had the normal level cap at 50 and then had 200 Paragon levels afterwards. Because that's really how it works.

The difference would be largely in player perception. For one thing if the XP bar filled up for each Paragon Point it would move faster. Another example: instead of saying "I stalled out at 74" I'd say "I made it to 50+58 and had my fill of the season."

Oh, and it would give them more wiggle room to extend the skill tree in the expansion(s).

Personally i think 70 is a good spot. It starts the beginning of WT4, yea you can do it earlier, but 70 is the low end for it. Getting to 70 isn't that difficult, but going from 70-100 is an absolute slog. Granted i've not tried it during a season yet having bowed out at level 45 for other games. It's supposed to be better now...

I do plan on trying again with S2

It's not great. I was 80 when the 1.1.2 patch came out with the density changes. Eighteen days later, I'm 93.75. Admittedly, I've been playing last, particularly in the last week, but I think I'm far from what would be called casual. It seems like it takes around 10 nightmare dungeons per level at the moment (currently doing tier 48s I could probably do higher but my damage is a little hampered by not finding a new Crone staff since WT3).

I'll probably focus more this week to get to 100 before Starfield comes out. I've got gear ready for the shred build that's supposed to be good for Lilith so, hopefully, I can get that out of the way too.

Is the Butcher getting you guys more often in nightmare dungeons? I'm getting him about one of every three so far.

That is intended from what I've read. That he shows up more often in nightmare dungeons.

I finally finished the story and got around to WT3 stuff.

New lease of life on the game for nightmare dungeons and whisper caches etc.

Got a real flow going with my Poisonslide Druid.

Arise thread! Did anyone check out the Season of Blood dev chat? I’m thinking of coming back for the new content and QOL.

part 2 on the 10th

“This will be our largest content update yet.”

It’s the second one. That is not at all an impressive claim…

Most of that was good. But nothing was exciting. I got none of the feel I get when GGG do the season reveals for PoE. I put the vast majority on that on the presentation and the type of content they make. It is, again, a lot of talking not as much showing and hyping. But what they showed, was some powers that looked underwhelming and very similar in concept to last season - you get some skill thingie when you do it. Could be fun and some of them sound very powerful, but it doesn't change the gameplay much. Which could get stale quick.

They are banking on that increasing builds, build diversity, etc. but that is among the weakest points in D4 as there's not so much to begin with, certainly not enough to carry someone playing a little more seriously over the entire season's length.
