Welcome folks, and happy “2051st anniversary of the Battle of Phillippi” week! You may all celebrate by hiding in a marsh.

It’s COD week again. Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare is Infinity Ward’s reboot of its branch of COD. New features include crossplay and a collateral damage score for killing civilians. We’re 16 CODs in, people. We’ve all worked out where we land on COD at this point.

Secret Neighbor would be my kids’ pick of the week. It’s a multiplayer horror game set in the Hello Neighbor world where you are a group of kids trying to break into the Neighbor’s basement. The Secret is that one of the kids is the Neighbor in disguise and has various gadgets and tricks to catch the other kids. Despite the “horror” tag, this one’s pitched at kids (and their favourite Youtubers). It’s like a G-rated version of Friday the 13th The Game and the second week in a row I get to mention asymmetrical gameplay.

Speaking of G-rated versions of stuff, Cat Quest II wraps up level-gated hack’n’slash RPG loot grinding in a cutesy, cat-themed blanket. Your mileage with this game will vary depending on whether you think cat and dog puns are purrfect or just ruff.

The chillest game this week is Eastshade. You play as a wandering painter, exploring the lush landscape of Eastshade island, talking to folks and looking for places to set up your easel and capture a scene that could be out of a Bob Ross painting. Unfortunately, there isn’t a Bob Ross minigame and the painting just appears fully formed when you press a button, but there are crafting mechanics involved in getting your artists’ materials together. It’s an RPG filled with characters, quests and puzzles, and no combat.

My GOTW is The Outer Worlds. It may be reductive to call it “Fallout in Space”, but here’s how I think it’s apt: it’s got that satirical, “corporations being corporationey” humour that we got from Vault-Tec, the art style has a space western vibe that looks like the colonies were built by people from New Vegas, and it has VATS. Of course, they can’t call it VATS – it’s Tactical Time Dilation – but by any other name it is as sweet. I love to pause a fight and coldly calculate which body part to aim for. I simply cannot get enough of it. Of course, there’ll be interesting ways to build your character, companions, factions to align with (then ultimately betray) and quest choices. Branching, stat-affected, damned-either-way, choices! I can’t wait.

Comments

Is that a Skullgirls sequel or just a Switch port?

Just a port. It's the game with all the DLC.

Outer Worlds is looking great, I hope it turns out that way.

The Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel III and The Outer Worlds are ordered, and I reckon I'll get to MediEvil at some point down the line.

I'm psyched for Lonely Mountains: Downhill. Been following it for a while, looks rad.

It turned up on PC Games Pass, so I took it for a (literal) ride.

It's pretty sweet - I could see getting sucked into the score chase.
