Ryan Garcia out of WBC after a racist tirade on social media.

One wonders what things would have looked like in previous eras with social medias:

Tommy Morrison
Tyson
Sonny Liston (ye gods)

I don't know what's up with that guy, but something is CLEARLY up with that guy. Like, beyond being a RW dipshit.

....probably up his nose, if I'm being honest.

Garcia posted an apology of sorts on X.

"I was trolling I want all the killing to stop," Garcia wrote. "I love everyone sorry if I offended you."

It has been a tumultuous year for Garcia, 25, who was arrested on felony vandalism charges last month after a Beverly Hills hotel accused him of causing an estimated $15,000 in damage.

In a statement released after the WBC announced its penalty, Garcia's family addressed his recent troubling behavior as well as his social-media remarks, stating that they "do not align with his, or our family's, true character or beliefs."

"Our family unequivocally does not support any statements [Garcia] has made regarding race or religion -- these do not reflect who Ryan truly is and how he was raised," the family's statement said. "Those who know Ryan can attest to this fact. Ryan has been open about his ongoing struggle with mental health over the years and as a family we are committed to ensuring and encouraging that he receives the necessary help to navigate this very challenging time and address both his immediate and long-term well-being."

Being generous and assuming this is true, boxing definitely doesn't help, nor is being surrounded by/becoming a beloved avatar for a bunch of soulless assholes and racists who are only interested in supporting him as long as he says wildly offensive stuff.

Trying to watch Tour de France but the commercial breaks are insane. Why no picture in picture?

It's a tremendous visual feast. Such beautiful countryside. Interrupted by ads.

And am I correct in seeing that the winners podium now has a male and female flower bearer?

Cyclist fined for kissing wife during Tour de France

French cyclist Julien Bernard has given a light-hearted apology after being fined for kissing his wife during a Tour de France time trial.

The Lidl-Trek rider was made to pay 200 Swiss francs ($223; £174) by the International Cycling Union (ICU) for stopping briefly during stage seven of the race.

The governing body said the fine was for "unseemly or inappropriate behaviour during the race and damage to the image of the sport".

Writing on social media, Bernard apologised to the UCI for "having damaged the image of sport" but said he was willing to pay the fine "every day and relive this moment".

Awww.

Also, if I may be very "married couple in a late 90's sitcom" for a moment, dude's got that one in the bank for ages.

Wasn’t even the actual race, it was a time trial.

Time trials obviously “count” but this came to mind anyway:

IMAGE(https://media4.giphy.com/media/3oEjI105rmEC22CJFK/giphy.gif?cid=6c09b9527arq6ysn36g3molwais6u3fmtj8sb4iqr7fy7923&ep=v1_internal_gif_by_id&rid=giphy.gif&ct=g)

I just like that they said it was "unseemly or inappropriate behaviour during the race and damage to the image of the sport."

A guy kissing his wife in a moment of absolute joy and achievement. Like, how do you even release that statement without knowing how you sound?

In a television interview following the stage, Bernard said the encounter with his loved ones had been a unique moment in his career and he had pushed hard earlier in the stage so he would have enough time to do so.

"It was really incredible. My wife has been organising this with some friends for a few weeks now and she did a really, really good job," he said.

"On a time trial, you have time to enjoy yourself. It's these moments that keep me going and cycling."

This is literally one of the best ways you could find to advertise your sport! It has fallen into your lap and your response is this?

Cyclists can’t be shown as loving anything besides the bike and the needle.

I'm assuming the issue is the stopping in the middle of a race, right?

If they want to stop in the middle and impact their times, that is up to them, right?

Time trials have staggered starts so it potentially affects everybody after them.

Stopping for a kiss and PEDs pretty much cancel out right?

Related aside, what's the correct term to call someone who loves PEDs?

PED-ophiles?

Or is that something else?

What if her lipstick is steroids?!?

I'm back on the officials side now, ban both of them.

More time to hype up the clown show.

Meanwhile in real boxing, Fury vs Usyk 2 is set for December 21st.

And, in a twist, it will (at least as of now) still be a fight for the undisputed championship, as the IBF opted against stripping Usyk of the IBF belt despite him missing the deadline for fighting mandatory challenger Filip Hgrovic. Instead, the IBF will create an interim title belt for the Hgrovic vs Daniel Dubios fight.

Alas, the IBF reversed course, and Usyk has vacated the belt.

Daniel Dubois' interim IBF title has been promoted to a full belt, which he'll defend against Anthony Joshua, while Fury vs. Usyk will have to settle for being for just 4 belts.

Does potentially set up a re-unification bout between the winners of these two fights. Usyk's last 3 fights prior to Fury were him beating Dubois once and Joshua twice, though.

Healthy and loving monogamous relations obviously damages the image of a sport. What are the sports tabloids supposed to talk about?

Everyone after also had to stop there?

It's been a while since I watched but I don't remember it being that common to have to pass somebody in a time trial. If he was stopped long enough for the next racer to catch up, that could potentially throw off their line which will cost them time.

Japan gymnast 'set to miss Olympics for smoking'

Japan women's artistic gymnastics captain Shoko Miyata is set to be sent home from the Olympic Games after allegedly breaking a smoking ban, the country's Kyodo news agency has reported., external

An investigation by the Japan Gymnastics Association (JGA) will be carried out which leaves Miyata's participation at the Paris Olympics in doubt, it said.

Smoking is in violation of the association's code of conduct.

The 19-year-old was not seen at Wednesday's open training session in Monaco with her absence said to be "for certain reasons", the JGA's head of development told Kyodo.

Miyata, who won a bronze medal at the 2022 World Championships in Liverpool, will be interviewed by the JGA and her Juntendo University team once she returns to Japan.

Japan are aiming to gain their first artistic gymnastics team medal since the 1964 Tokyo Games.

The Paris Games open on 26 July.

On the one hand, rules are rules.

On the other hand, COME THE **** ON, DUDE.

This is like the track woman from four years ago whose first name I’m not even going to try to spell on my phone — yeah, it’s a dumb rule, but if you know the rule and consequences (and the athletes surely do) and still do it, I don’t really have much sympathy.

I read a bit more about the Japanese gymnast today and it isn't just a rule, it is the law. In Japan it is illegal to smoke and drink if you are under 20 and she did both. The Japanese Olympic code of conduct has another rule that says you can't smoke no matter your age. So she got kicked out for the law breaking and breaking the code of conduct.

My thing is there is no way this is the first time she smoked, and people in her gymnast program had to know she smokes. It should not have been a surprise and they thought, what, yes just stop doing this highly addictive activity while you are under the most stress in your life, that will surely work out great!

Horse sports leads to animal abuse controversy

One of Team GB’s biggest stars, Charlotte Dujardin, has been banned from the Paris Olympics over allegations that she whipped a horse “24 times … like an elephant in a circus”.

The 39-year-old, who won six dressage Olympic medals in London, Rio and Tokyo, has been suspended after a video emerged of the incident that occurred when she conducted a coaching session to a young rider in a private stable several years ago.

The Dutch lawyer Stephan Wensing, who is representing the 19-year-old who filed the official complaint against Dujardin, said that he was pleased that the International Federation for Equestrian Sports (FEI) had taken such a strong stand.

“Charlotte Dujardin was in the middle of the arena,” he said. “She said to the student: ‘Your horse must lift up the legs more in the canter.’ She took the long whip and she was beating the horse more than 24 times in one minute. It was like an elephant in the circus.

“At that time, my client was thinking this must be normal. She is an Olympic winner. Who am I to doubt? My client asked around and was warned against speaking out in the UK. But last year my client saw others suspended in the UK and elsewhere.

“And this weekend, she eventually made a decision to let me admit the complaint to the FEI and that happened yesterday. The FEI took this immediately very seriously.”

British Equestrian refused to directly comment on Wensing’s allegations. However the organisation’s chief executive, Jim Eyre, admitted the allegations against Dujardin were serious.

“As the guardians of equestrian sport, we must uphold the highest standards of equine welfare – the horse’s wellbeing is paramount,” he said. “We have been in close liaison with the FEI on the matter and will fully comply with any requests to fulfil their investigation and support the robust processes around such complaints.

“The allegations made are serious and the consequences far reaching but upholding the integrity of our sport remains our priority.”

One of my favorite things about handball is that the main difference between the regular players and the goalies appears to be that the goalie wears sweatpants instead of shorts.

We talking Olympics here or in another thread?

A Serbian competitor in the CrossFit Games dies during a swimming event at a Texas lake

Triathlons have the swimming portion at the beginning, but Crossfit, because they're so metal, put it at the end.

DALLAS (AP) — A Serbian competitor in the CrossFit Games died while competing in a swimming event Thursday morning at a Texas lake, officials said.

CrossFit CEO Don Faul said during a news conference that they were “deeply saddened” and were working with authorities on the investigation into the death of one of their athletes at Marine Creek Lake in Fort Worth.

The Tarrant County medical examiner’s office identified the athlete as 28-year-old Lazar Dukic of Serbia. The medical examiner’s office had not yet listed his cause of death.

An official with the Fort Worth Fire Department said they were called out around 8 a.m. to assist police because there was “a participant in the water that was down and hadn’t been seen in some point in time.”

Officers who were working the event were told a participant was unaccounted for after last being seen in the water and then not resurfacing, police said.

The Fort Worth fire official said they responded for search and rescue and were not on the scene when the initial call was made.

Faul said CrossFit had a safety plan and did have safety personnel on site at the event. CrossFit did not respond Thursday to an inquiry from The Associated Press seeking more details on that safety plan.

The Fort Worth Star-Telegram reported the event on Thursday included a 3.5-mile (5.6-kilometer) run followed by an 800-meter (0.5-mile) swim. The newspaper said an estimated 10,000 people were in the area for the games, which began Thursday and were set to run through Sunday.

Kaitlin Pritchard told the newspaper that she was standing by the finish line when she saw Dukic approach. She said he was among swimmers she noticed had changed up their swimming patterns, which she thought could have been because they were tired from the run.

Pritchard saw people she assumed were lifeguards on paddleboards on the lake but didn’t notice any of them jumped in to try to rescue anyone, she said.

“Gauging where the people on the paddleboards were and everything, it’s just that he should have been reachable,” Pritchard told the newspaper.

Dukic played water polo and was an athlete ambassador for FITAID, a sports drink brand, said Gijs Spaans, general manager for FITAID in Europe. Spaans, who knew Dukic for three years, described him as a driven athlete and a “guy who walks into a room and lights up the room.”

“He had an incredible work ethic with his athletics career but, you know, always also made time to speak to people and make time for them,” Spaans said. “Just a really, really good dude.”

Spaans was watching a livestream of the swim miles away at the main event site. He was looking for Dukic among the swimmers coming out of the water before realizing he was missing.

“I thought he had this. And then all of a sudden I was thinking, ‘Why is his name not showing up in the finishes?’” Spaans said. “All the race, he was in top five of the race. And all of a sudden I see all these other people coming in. I’m like, ‘What’s going on?’”

“He was in it to win it,” Spaans added. “He was a great swimmer.”

The mission of the CrossFit Games, first held in 2007, is to “find the fittest athletes in the world,” the CrossFit website said. It says the games change every year and often the details are not announced until just before the event.

The CrossFit community is like a family, Faul said.

“We’re doing everything in our power during this tragic time to support the family, to support our community,” Faul said.

Dukic’s biography on the CrossFit website says he was the third-ranked CrossFit athlete in Serbia and the 88th-ranked worldwide. Dukic finished ninth in his debut in the games in 2021, then eighth the next season and ninth in 2023.

Stengle reported from Dallas and Kelety from Phoenix. AP Sports Writer Pete Iacobelli contributed from Columbia, South Carolina.

There's video of the probable incident on Twitter. To say it appears grossly negligent is being kind.

Ok, I had to full-screen that and really hunt for what that person was talking about.

It appears that there looks to be a male swimmer near the last guidepost (maybe 100m from finish?) who bobs his head couple times, then takes a couple strokes, then you see him bob again. This is maybe 25m (?) from one of the observers on a stand-up paddleboard. Those folks should be lifeguards, or would be during a triathlon. I have no idea how CF does it.

I will say that lifeguards should absolutely be monitoring individuals closely, especially at race end where they are all spread out and it's not like someone may be obscured by splash or other racers.

Usually there are lifeguards in kayaks that are monitoring swimmers and can move rapidly (as opposed to SUP) to come alongside struggling swimmers.

What we can't see on the video is any response (if there was one) so I'm definitely withholding judgement from a single vid feed. And we don't know what happened physically. Maybe there was a rapid response but the swimmer had a heart attack and couldn't be revived. It's a tragedy and people are suffering no matter the particulars.

I don't want to "spoil" the NFL thread with this but, uh...

...lotta kids been dying playing football this year. A 13-year-old in West Virginia and a 16-year-old in Alabama, most recently.

I don't think this'll hcange anything anywhere, but it's worth pointing out, I think.
