Playstation 5 Catch-All

It seems a little odd that the announcement comes only days after the ransom announcement, but I'm also fully prepared to believe that the two things are completely unrelated.

I doubt he's being forced out for his performance - disliked though he may be by Sony fanboys (which is, of course, a very small minority of the user base, the majority of whom likely wouldn't even know his name), he's been in charge during a period that's seen fantastic financial returns even though it was during a global pandemic and its related supply chain issues.

PlayStation 5 Slim - Official Model Reveal Trailer
*I hope they didn't pay a lot to the ad folks for this. Although it is amazing they could fit so much dull in such a short time.

Size comparison - the reference point I would use is the CD slot. I assume it is the same.

Durp Durp…the vertical stand for the Slim is sold separately and for $30.

Very on the fence about this still, the idea of being able to sit on the couch whilst the telly is on in the evening does seem to work for me but it seems like it might just not get used? Looking forward to the reviews and any reports here if people jump and get one.

Personally this was the cheapest, easiest way to play on the PS5 when the kids are playing on the Xbox, Switch, or watching TV.
I would basically have to create a second TV room with the PS5 and a TV in it otherwise. Right now we have one TV in the house.

PlayStation Portal Unboxing + Pulse Explore Hands On!

While I was initially skeptical of the Portal, I've started to come around to its use cases more.
I definitely would wait for reviews, but I could see getting one.
Maybe if there's a price drop. I'd say $150 is my give it a shot price point until I'm more convinced.

Review units are out.

PLAYSTATION PORTAL IS A SLICK SOLUTION FOR PORTABLE PLAYERS

Do you have to wrestle over the main television with your partner? Perhaps you want to run your daily missions in Fortnite or build Squad Building Challenges in EA FC from the comfort of your bed (or toilet.)?

On the other hand, if you’re the master and commander of your entertainment center and you’re never separated from the thing your actual PS5 is plugged into, then the PlayStation Portal probably isn’t for you.

However, if you fit into the former category, the PlayStation Portal is a slick piece of hardware, even if there are other solutions to the service it offers.

Sony PlayStation Portal Review!

The Playstation Portal looks fine for what it is. But the use case is too narrow for me at that price. I will keep an eye on the bargain bins this time next year.

The one thing that caused me to raise an eyebrow is the fact that you cannot use the Portal to turn off your PS5 remotely. This is strange because - I believe - that this functionality was available for the Playstation Portable.

So when one finishes a play session, one still has to go to the room that the PS5 is in to turn it off.

It does feel a little bit like a missed opportunity. At the very least, I'd have hoped for the ability to download and play remotely PSP and PS Vita games. (I accept that it would be too much to expect the ability to play PS3, PS4 and certainly not PS5 games.)

Weird yeah you can turn the PS5 off from your phone or PC using remote play already. That doesn't make sense. When you're connected you just pull up the PS bar and move over and click on rest as if you were on the PS5 and that disconnects you when it powers off. Surely this does the same.

Dammit, why didn't someone tell me it won't work stand alone? I feel like no one has mentioned it - in every fracking review article, video, or comment!!!!! Oh wait. I mean everyone says it ever time. I want to believe they are trying to help the clueless but if every article on the Xbox started with "it won't play Playstation, or Nintendo game!" People would feel it was stupid to keep talking about.

Anyway. Every review - past the 3 minute mark - makes me more excited about it more and more. I want mine!

Sony PlayStation Portal | Unboxing & Early Review

Is PlayStation Portal worth it? - Review discussion VGC

PlayStation Portal Review: Everything you NEED to know

I think it is very likely that there will be people who buy this thinking it's a standalone portable device because they know what a Switch or Steam Deck is. Nobody expects their PS5 to play Xbox games, so it's not really comparable to that made up example. Just because we're super plugged into gaming hardware and news, doesn't mean everyone else is.

Yeah, I could see people thinking this is a new Vita or whatever. Sony has done it twice already and I'm honestly surprised they haven't made another.

I will resign myself to skipping the first 1-3 minutes of every video

But as long as I am complaining they could do a lot better comparing it to playing on your phone or the razor, etc.

Wait, the PS Portal doesn't work without a PS5?

Worse, in a horrible miscalculation about manufacturing time it only works with the PS3.

Could be worse... they could have also created a console called Playstation 5 (Series S) and actually conned people into believing that they were buying a nextgen console

This screams to be discontinued and no more software updates…that being said if it drops to $99 I’d get it just to have for a bit until the PS6 releases.

Also, Sony should be mocked for making a new PSP with less features.

God damn it...

I thought this was the single most ridiculous thing when I first saw it. But now with Christmas travel (and a desire to futz with my BG3 inventory endlessly), I keep seeing more uses for it.

Can I lay in bed and game a bit? Yes.

Can I sneak in some gaming at work during lunch? Probably

Can I take my PS5 with me for Holiday travel? Yeah, but this would be easier.

Could I do almost everything this thing can do with my phone and an extra DS5? Absolutely, but it wouldn't be as easy.

I don't want to buy this, but I can see the use cases much more now.

Yes, it does. I guess some might have thought it would work differently and be able to turn the PS5 on from being completely turned off? Remote play doesn’t work like that for PS5 or Xbox.

For me, I’ve tried other remote play options. My phone screen is smaller than I would like. My iPad with Dualsense works pretty good but I need to prop up the iPad somewhere. My laptop is portable but big. It’s very much a “luxury” item in the sense of being totally unnecessary but to me it was worth the price to still have the Dualsense experience with a nice sized 8 inch screen. I will pick this up more than I will the other remote play options for the reasons mentioned above.

I kinda want the portal but I already bought a dedicated TV for gaming so can't justify the $200 price tag. It would be nice to be able to play upstairs though. I think I'll continue saving to justify a VR2 purchase instead.

Sounds like streaming might come to the Portal in the future.

And Sony says that are aware it is a niche product and is designed to increase those players PS5 time rather than to make a profit.

Er at $200 this is hardly a razors razor blade product. I might buy Sonys line if they had priced it at $99

I guess I didn’t take it to mean so much that they’re losing money on it, more that they don’t expect it to be a significant money maker.

And while they aren’t selling it as a loss, it’s more motivated by increasing engagement with the PS5 as an accessory than it is a profit driver.

I was really not planning to get the Portal, but the more I thinking about it, the more I can see myself using it when traveling and such. I am somewhat shocked to see that it is sold out at the usual suspects (Amazon, Target, Walmart, Best Buy, Gamestop), I was not expecting it to be such a high seller.

First world problem question.

Don't most modern HDMI TVs have some sort of HDMI handshake? If you turn "on" your Playstation remotely doesn't it turn on your TV? I know there's a million ways around that, but I personally find that convenient so I don't have to turn on 3 different things to get my system up and running.
