Playstation 5 Catch-All

Well the list of games expected on day 1 is interesting. Thankfully for me I don't see the value in Premium Extra... the only game on the list would be Ape Escape 2 remake. I have zero interest in playing non-remastered PS1,2,3 games.

May need to upggrade to premium just to tick a few games off my list I haven't played yet.

As a relatively recent ps5 owner this works for me at the mid tier. Returnal Demons Souls we’re definite purchases for me plus a few others so I am probably signed up for that.

Follow up:

Ubisoft also revealed that beginning May 24, it will launch a new Ubisoft+ subscription for PlayStation Plus called Ubisoft+ Classics. Ubisoft+ Classics on PlayStation is a curated selection of popular games, including top-selling Assassin’s Creed Valhalla, The Division, and For Honor, as well as beloved classic games like Child of Light, Far Cry 3 Blood Dragon, Watch Dogs, Werewolves Within, and more. The Ubisoft+ Classics catalogue for PlayStation Plus will launch with 27 titles and will grow to 50 by the end of 2022

I've seen rumors floating around for a while that something like this was coming to Xbox Game Pass. It's unclear if it's also coming there, but this is a big get for the PS+ Extra and Premium tiers.

Demon Souls is coming out for the PS3 via streaming. Does that mean the servers will be turned on?

Most of the major ones like Miles Morales and Tsushima: DC I already picked up earlier this year. Oh well, at least I can claim them and get rid of my discs.

^ Don't get rid of those discs - if I'm reading this right, the games in the Extra and Premium tiers (unlike the offerings of the Essential tier, i.e. the PS+ Collection and the two monthly free games) are a rotating collection, and won't be free once they rotate out.

I admit I am dumb so could someone tell me what I will have under the new system?

I have Playstation Plus 12 month subscription that I got back in April. So what is that in the new regime? It seems like "essential"

And will I be able to upgrade if I wanted? I mean I have already paid for a year of essential so can I just pay the ... $50 more to go to the "extra" tier?

Yes the plus sub becomes the lowest tier of the 3 new offerings. They've said an upgrade will be available to higher tiers though I haven't seen details of how you sign up for that yet.

It looks like Norman Reedus has confirmed a Death Stranding sequel I'm not really sure my feelings on this. I'll spoiler my thoughts on Death Standing as it's a touch on the long side.

Spoiler:

On my first playthrough back at launch I was really into the game, interesting lore, amazing naturalistic terrain, traversal were you actually had to watch your step, ease off on the analogue on steep ground or when you walked knee deep across a river. The cargo system seemed different & more engaging moment to moment. There were brilliant movie like cut scenes especially some of the early ones with the BT's, there's always been a flair & a high production value to Kojima & his team right back from the MGS days.

Episode 3 was the first time I started getting bogged down by deliveries. I thought the writing was very basic for most of the NPC's you traveled to out at the various bunkers, farms, mountain hideaways etc The fact that they are all just holograms in mostly identical interiors didn't help either. The climbing is another thing that just didn't seem to be fully fleshed out.

I think combat would be better just removed from the game altogether, the BT's feel fresh & interesting the first couple of times, with you having to slow down, sneaking around them, staying still to visibly see where they are. Its very atmospheric & tense but the more you encounter them they become a frustration that slows you to a crawl. The encounters with the Mule's felt very one note & you've usually a crap load of cargo on you moving slowly whilst getting shot at. The boss encounters have all been fairly unenjoyable too.

I set the game down & hoped to come back to it. The PS5 Directors Cut give me the reason, it runs like a dream, feels more responsive & the dual sense is actually utilized very well considering it's been bolted onto a PS4 game. I got to the snow area, there was volcanic terrain too, but again I feel it started to drag with delivery after delivery. The main story I'm not even sure I understand anymore. I stopped playing once again.

Bar the dumb story & the repetition of the game there was still something alluring about it, building structures, roads, leaving items for other players, the beautiful music, getting suit upgrades, bringing ladders & ropes that get you out of sticky situations or create shortcuts to your next destination. I think there's a good base here. I don't think they can rescue the story, Kojima let his artistic side go bonkers in that regard but perhaps a new story, more lean, focused & one that makes a bit more sense would be welcome.

This part is actually a spoiler as it's fairly near the end of the game but I honestly think it's one of the dumbest things I've ever seen in a game.

Spoiler:

Amelie & Sam on the beach, nevermind that the Mario lines are atrocious (especially the second one) but after finding out she betrayed Sam, in the very next scene they are running down the beach smiling like two idiots acting like nothing had happened. The top rated YouTube comment 'The cringe was so strong that it almost caused a voidout'

I'm gonna need to reinstall Death Stranding, go back & finish it. I'm near sure I'm at the end of episode 12, so I can't be that much longer from finishing the main story.

Interesting read.

For me, the incentives to upgrade beyond my existing 'Essential' subscription get weaker with each successive tier of the service.

'Extra' isn't attractive because there aren't yet enough compelling PS5 exclusives to justify paying more of a "PS4 and PS5 game catalog [sic]"

'Premium' isn't attractive because I have no desire to play very old games. The oldest PS1 games are now 23 years old! I might want to play the odd one, once in a while. But I wouldn't want to play them most of the time. (In the same way that I might want to go on a camping holiday every few years. But I wouldn't want to live permanently in a tent.) And how old is most recent PS3 exclusive now?*

'Deluxe' isn't attractive because "time limited trials on blockbuster titles" feels a bit vague. How long are the trials? What counts as a blockbuster title? My suspicion is that I'd end up being offered trials on expensive games that have missed their sales targets. An endless diet of 'Guardians of the Galaxy'-type games, in other words.

* Old gamers like me tend to become slightly misty-eyed about the 32-bit consoles. But I question the wider appeal of those games among younger people. In that respect, I think old games are a lot like old cars.

I can see myself going for the Extra tier, but only when I'm done with the already purchased games I have yet to play, and only on a 1 to 3 month basis depending on what is currently available.

I will upgrade to the extra tier. It is worth at least one year just based on Bloodborne, Days Gone, Demon's Souls, Spider-man, Returnal, Last of Us, Control, and South Park.

...But 3 of those games you already get with a PS5 and the base tier!

If you have PS+ Essential (or, as it's currently known, PS+) and a PS5 you already have free access to Days Gone and Last of Us Remastered via the PS+ Collection, which isn't going away. (And it plays fantastically at 60fps.)

I managed to snag a year's PS Now subscription just before Sony shut down access, so I'll be rolled into premium until April 2023. In dabbling around with it in the last month, I can say that unless the new service upgrades streaming latency Premium absolutely isn't worth it for access to PS3 games. Currently the streaming experience varies from too-frustrating-to-be-worth-it to pretty-much-unplayable.

Edit: kuddles types faster than me, but I think they're assuming you've had PS+ at the right times in the past to have picked up an additional game via PS+ monthly offerings; as far as I can see the only two on farley3k's list you definitely get with a PS5 and PS+ currently, via the PS+ Collection, are Days Gone and Last Of Us Remastered.

Second edit: yep, Last Of Us Remastered is in the PS+ Collection; I are dumb.

Last of Us was in the collection too I'm pretty sure. That's why I finally played the Left Behind story on my PS5

I counter with Demon's Souls and Returnal

I can understand that it might not be a great deal but since I have PS Base now it will let me play those two games for less than buying them would be. So even right out of the gate as it were it is a good deal for me.

Hopefully some other great games will come along in the year but if not it was still a good thing to try.

@kuddles, farley3k

Do provide occasional updates on your experiences with the 'Extra' subscription. Your posts set out a strong case for subscribing to that tier: access to PS4 exclusive 'greatest hits'.

Are you both new (or new-ish) to PS Plus? I ask because a significant number of Playstation exclusives have been made available as monthly games on pre-2022 PS Plus. Bloodborne, Days Gone, The Last of Us and Control have all featured, farley3k.

That said, the best PS4 titles only started appearing in 2016. And obtaining them obliged subscribers to be diligent about added titles to their library every month. I definitely haven't been diligent, so I missed out on lots of titles that I'd now love to have access to.

I was in a funny spot where I stopped playing most games altogether, and stopped playing my PS4 for quite some time as well, so I had let my PS+ sub lapse for a while. And then I managed to snag a PS5 in March of last year and re-upped.

So for my scenario, the PS+ collection (plus the monthly games like Control) was a huge boon because it was multiple games I never got around to, now in a much nicer form. However, it also makes the Extra tier list released so far a bit of a wet noodle because in my desire to play the few PS5 titles available, I've already purchased a lot of the big ones like Ghost of Tsushima:DC and Miles Morales ages ago. I think someone who is just getting a PS5 now and maybe skipped last generation is going to have a smorgasbord subscribing to the Extra tier.

But the thing that makes me think I might take the plunge are the titles like Death Stranding and Gravity Rush, a.k.a. games that I am curious about but also read enough to know they aren't exactly my typical kind of thing, so when a sale comes along, I always go with the safer bet of other titles I'm more excited about, especially in an era where even indie games are in the $30-40 range. If there ends up being a fair amount of those shuffled around on a monthly basis, I think it would be enough for me to keep subscribed to Extra, and in the best case scenario might also get "free" AAA games I really want to play, especially since I don't have a "must have day 1" desire and go through phases where I don't feel like playing anything for a couple months.

And all of us who got a PS5 in 2020 or 1st quarter 2021 bought both of those, and Miles Morales, because what else were we gonna play?

I didn't get either because it's a foregone conclusion that I wouldn't get very far in them (and that's including the many hours I spent in the PS3 version of Demon's Souls, where I managed to beat a grand total of three bosses). Looking forward to at least trying each out for free, where "free" in this instance means "purchased a $60 PS Now subscription".

Deathloop is on deep discount for anyone who had it wishlisted. I got it for £24.

Ghostwire: Tokyo is half off on the Days of Play Sale, which is a pretty steep discount given that it just released 2 months ago. I've been playing it the last week, and I've been having a ton of fun. The bad news is that the shooting is not very good. However, the game has a great presentation and you do a lot more exploring and collecting than combat. It's spooky, but not scary.

I'm reminded of another ghost story "Murdered: Soul Suspect," which was a cool "B" game from a few years ago. If Ghostwire looks interesting to you, I encourage you to try it out.

New State of Play next Thursday

What to expect:

Tune in live next Thursday, June 2 for nearly 30 minutes of announcements and updates from the world of PlayStation. We’ll have some exciting reveals from our third-party partners, plus a sneak peek at several games in development for PlayStation VR2.

I predict the part you bolded will be missed by most and they’ll go in with sky high expectations and be disappointed. Wait, never mind, just described the Internet.

Final Fantasy XVI! Final Fantasy XVI!

In before "Silksong release date?" chat spam.

I am just going to sit here quietly and hope for more information and a solid date on the KOTOR remake.

This is why I try to highlight that portion every time I post about them. I expect nothing more of the internet, but hopefully it will at least help people here with setting proper expectations

That's the dream! We are supposed to get a new trailer some time this summer, but I think June may be a bit too early. Fingers crossed though. I have seen speculation that Street Fighter 6 is a likely reveal.

I'm most interested to see what they show for PSVR2. I'm guessing it won't be anything too crazy, as I'd expect them to save their first-party VR games for a Playstation showcase.

I'm actually expecting Summer Game Fest to be when we get the FF16 trailer, but I may as well try to manifest my desires earlier.
