Playstation 5 Catch-All

At this point, I think I'm not going to pick up anything during the Spring sale on PSN, and might as well wait until I know what games are on the Extra level in June.

I'm currently waiting outside Gamestop for a PS5. I'm 4th in line, another hour to wait and I'll join the club!

Good luck!

How did you go?

Was able to get the Disc version PS5 bundle - PS5, extra controller, charging station, Horizon Forbidden West and Spider Man Miles Morales! $850 after tax.

12 month PS Now subscriptions for $60 via Wario 64: https://twitter.com/wario64/status/1...

These will be automatically upgrade to PS+ Premium come June, the level that will cost $120 going from that point forward. I was not planning to pay the $120 for the high tier service, but I will definitely check it out for $60.

This link worked for me. I have no idea how long it this option will be valid available, so take advantage of it asap before they remove it if interested.

I thought PS Now was only getting upgraded to the middle tier?

Been gone a few...

I find myself deeply unimpressed by the forthcoming Playstation Plus.

Plus Extra offers up to 400 games from the PS4 and PS5 catalogue. So - right now - that means mostly PS4 games. Surely the back half of that four hundred is going to comprise indie games, esoterica and - frankly - sh*t?

I can only imagine that Plus Extra's target market is youngish (say, 16 - 30 years old), who may not have experienced the PS4's greatest hits.

But I'm baffled by Plus Premium offering. The oldest PS1, PS2, PSP and PS3 games are 27, 21, 18 and 14 years old respectively. Is there a really significant audience for these games? Or - to be slightly flippant, but more precise - are there lots of people desperate to play the original Gran Turismo on their PS5, 4k TV and surround sound set-ups?

If Day One releases aren't part of the package, then I struggle to see a new customer actively choosing either of these services. (I accept that most existing subscribers will simply allow themselves to be migrated across.)

Of course, my judgement is clouded by the fact that I only have PS Plus ("Essential") because Sony require it for online multiplayer. Over the years, I have added a fair number of the free games to my library, but I don't think I've even started more than a couple of them. So for me, the freebies are of no value.

But I am prepared to be utterly wrong about how others are likely to new PS Plus offer.

Given his previous statements, I'd wager that Jim Ryan agrees with you. But repackaging and rebranding PS Now as part of PS+ is a way to get shareholders off his back who keep asking "Why doesn't PlayStation have something like GamePass?"

Well, I think there isn't a significant audience for the Premium offering - hence why they are just throwing it in as an additional option for high spenders and removing the ability to do it separately. I actually wouldn't be surprised if a couple years from now we start seeing stories about them removing the PS Now streaming service altogether.

On the other hand, Plus Extra could be very appealing to me personally - I tend to play about a few hours of a lot of games and then bounce off. So me getting basically a ton of them to try all the time would be ideal, and a lot of indie to midrange devs would be getting some money from me instead of the current situation where I think about my fickle nature and therefore never even consider dropping $30 on them just to find out if it's my thing. I also assume those games will rotate in and out on a regular basis like the XBOX service, and also like those service you can only play them while they are available, not "own" them forever like the "free" games on the lower tier.

I guess since I already signed up for two years of the highest tier using the trick Dyni posted, I’m part of the mystery audience.

I don’t think it’s a giant mystery. I’m currently playing Final Fantasy Tactics on my PS3, FF6 Pixel Remaster on my laptop. They are comfort food in between big releases and not having to fire up the PS3 to play 4 hours of Xenogears for the 6th time holds some appeal.

My guess is Plus Extra will be more or less a collection of the past 8 years of PS Plus offerings. So if you've been a Plus member for a while, it's probably going to be pointless.

I think this is quite likely. But I'm still not clear how we get to 400 games.

Eight years of PS Plus games is still only 200 odd games. And I don't know whether Sony will still have the right to give away this games to new PS Plus Extra customers. As I understand it, customers of the current PS Plus don't have either the right or the ability to add games to their personal libraries retrospectively. If you didn't grab a given game during the month it was available, then there is no opportunity to get it now.

It'll be fascinating to see what this new library actually contains.

My assumption is that it will be the nearly the full PS Now library. PS Now currently supports streaming and direct download of games, so I would guess that Extra is PS Now minus streaming (except for PS3 games as there's currently no PS3 emulation on PS5).

Now that I have a PS5 are there any multiplayer games the GWJ group is playing regularly? I fondly remember the early days of PS4 when we got together for TLOU multiplayer.

The only games I'm playing multiplayer atm are co-op in Elden Ring & online races against my brother & friend in Gran Turismo 7. Returnal co-op I do eventually want to get to but the Tower Of Sisyphus mode has it hooks in me lately which makes Returnal more like a 3D Nex Machina.

6 months of free AppleTV for PS4/PS5 owners. Download the app on your console and launch. It will activate the free 6-month period and does not matter if you’ve previously had a subscription or not.

I don't think that's true - I'm already an AppleTV subscriber, but I'd be happy to get six months free, so I downloaded the app and tried to get the offer. Once I was signed in I got a message saying "You have already received a free trial for this subscription and are no longer eligible for another".

The Verge is reporting it is for new and existing customers, but the PlayStation website says new subscribers only. I’ve previously had a free trial and a subscription and it worked for me… so all I can say is it doesn’t hurt to try.

A friendly reminder for folks not to forget to download Slay The Spire on PS Plus if you haven't played it yet. It's got the potential to suck your life away. I've put in nearly 800 hours on the Switch & have already beaten the game in my early runs on PS5 (now that I know the game inside out).

Thanks for that tip, Spikeout. I rarely even look at the PS Plus freebies now, so these prompts are very helpful.

Damn sideshow!

What I want to know is when the NFL Gamepass App for PS5 is coming out! I only discovered this weekend that there is no web browser on the PS5 (or, at least, not an easily accessible one).

I had no idea.

Thanks for the reminder!

No problem at all. It was my GOTY in 2019, Slay The Spire just has a magic aura to it & the design of the game is genius.

The random element of how you acquire cards & build your deck means you have to think on your toes. This design choice keeps players from going down the predictable path of a few go to powerful decks, the game is so much more exciting & rewarding for it. There are literally hundreds of combinations with cards, relics & potions that you'll be discovering for a long long time to come.

Give it a bit of time though, you need to get your bearings with how certain cards interact with each other & cards that initially seem useless can be insanely powerful once you understand the benefits they can bring. It's the same thing with the relics, you'll be unsure what a lot of them are actually doing or what ways they synergistically work with other cards/relics. Once it clicks though you'll be amazed at the combo's you can pull off.

Good luck!

Worked for me, thanks! I've had AppleTV before, but not a paid sub, maybe that's the difference.

While, UI-wise, I'm still largely in the "why did Sony take away things it took them so long to put back in with the PS4 interface?" camp (Where are my folders?), I've found a perfect use case for the fact that screenshots can be viewed overlaid on the current game.

I've been doing a new run of The Witness, since I got distracted by something shiny back in 2016 and never finished it, and being able to take screenshots and compare them with a different view of the same thing is proving to be incredibly useful. In fact, I'm a little startled that I got as far as I did six years ago without this; while I know the PS4 could do screenshots, it was so cumbersome to leave the game and access them and then go back to the game while trying to keep the screenshot in your head that I'm certain I couldn't have used them as an in-game tool. I must have had reams of hand-drawn notes at the time.

You can also view and share screenshots on the mobile app too. It really is a handy companion, for chat and lots of other things
