Playstation 5 Catch-All

I think the first game I would want to try is the Gears Tactics game, that always looked really fun.

Nice! I played the first three (plus Judgement) back in the day, and it would be great to revisit them, and to eventually get 4 and 5.

Could someone enable me on a portal and pulse earbuds for £330. Seems a good price but comparing it to a second ps5 for 380 and it seems close.

You could sell your PS5 to pay for the Portal & earbuds! And then later sell them, fetching a better price because they've never been used due to the lack of a PS5.

PS4 emulation isn't quite where it needs to be for me to go completely console-less, but we're about a Demon's Souls PC port-away from me selling the PS5 and going back to the PS4 Pro.

Though even ignoring the PC ports, there really aren't very many Sony PS5 games.
There were only 2 PS5 games in 2023 that weren't cross-gen with the PS4? FF XIV and Spider-Man 2
A few more in 2024 (6 by my count) but one was Concord.

It’s ok I enabled myself with whiskey.

40 minute state of play tomorrow night.

My portal has arrived at home whilst I am travelling with work. Oh the irony.

Well so far I haven't seen anything I care about much in the state of play. I will keep hoping.

More Onimusha is good. I ha be fond memories of those games.

The PS4 is the console that just won't go away, judging by the number of titles coming to both PS4 and PS5...

Housemarque singleplayer game incoming. I know someone who’ll be very pleased.

Metal Eden has potential. Hopefully the combat is as wild as it looks.

You probably meant SpikeOut, but I am also very pleased

I absolutely loved Returnal and am thrilled that they are making another game in that direction. Saros is high up on my most anticipated list now.

I did mean Spikeout . We’ve just started playing Returnal co-op.

Enjoy! I played through a fresh save in co-op with my brother after I finished it solo. It's a great co-op game.

I was just coming to post that video for Spikeout after I saw it on Twitter. Haha.

Maybe we should all play Returnal again, it was fun

I was cool on the State of Play but, the more I think about it, the more it feels like a great mix of games for people of different ages and different tastes. There are also more games I’m interested in than I initially thought.

This is loverly:

State of Play thoughts, roughly ordered in decreasing interest:
- A bunch of stuff I already knew about and def want to try, like Split Fiction, The Midnight Walk, etc.
- Saros reveal. Housemarque’s next game and it looks like Returnal but moooooore. Definite play.
- Darwin’s Paradox reveal, looks awesome. Inside-like but bright and comedic.
- Lost Records: Bloom & Rage announced to come day 1 to Ps+. I was interested in this game, but probably not enough to buy at full price. This’ll fix that. Nice.
- Shinobi: Art of Vengeance looked very cool.
- Lies of P official announcement of I think DLC prequel?? Maybe I should finally play OG…
- Blue Prince puzzly game, direct to PS+. Looks like my type of thing, if it reviews well.
- Tides of Annihilation reveal. Stunning art direction, but won’t be out this year.
- Metal Eden reveal. Not my type of game (fast paced actiony fps), but looks very cool.
- Mindseye reveal. Story heavy action game about AI in near-future dystopia? Looked good but the gameplay felt a bit off to me. Def wait for reviews this summer.

Overall I thought it was pretty decent!

Warriors: Abyss was announced at yesterday's Playstation State of Play and it's available already. It's a survivors-like take on Dynasty Warriors and it's actually quite cool:

PC (Steam)
PS4/PS5

You don't auto attack like most survivor-likes so it's maybe a bit more Hades-esque in the combat system, but the overall structure is much more like a survivors game. Instead of getting attacks you recruit party members (all from the Romance of the Three Kingdoms) and those party members are your special attacks. You can have up to six and basically the combat system works where your light attack combo "dials in" which hero you want to summon and then your heavy attacks execute the summon. There's also an active dodge and a lot of the enemies have area of effect tells on their attacks so its lots of dodging and moving. And a really awesome addition is that you can dash in the middle of your combo and then keep your combo going, which is super satisfying.

I spent a couple hours with it last night and was really digging it even if I didn't quite grasp all of the systems yet. Hard to say how much content there is and the $25 is maybe a bit steep for the survivors genre, but I'd say put it on a wishlist and pick it up on sale sometime if you (like me) enjoy survivors games.

More on Metal Eden. It sounds frantic.

With what little was shown of the mechanics, it immediately reminded me of GhostRunner.

Played about with the portal and I am currently really enjoying it. The use case feels very specific to me though so I can stream from the console when my wife is using the big telly or stream cloud games when the kids are using the ps5. I was really impressed with cloud streaming God Of War Ragnarok last night.

It is a nice device. I really wish they would develop a strong streaming offering so I could play any PS game I own without having to connect to my PS5 but I know that isn't their design,

Yes totally agree if they could expand what’s on offer for cloud streaming (and add party making for coop games) it would be perfect. I think that’s all a long way off though.

They won this round of the console wars so I guess Sony doesn't have to worry too much but I really wish they would embrace the MS idea of "play anywhere, on anything"

I'm a Housemarque guy! Really happy they are getting to work on another rogue like that seems like it'll apply all of the learnings of Returnal & push them to the next level. On the post on PS blog by Gregory Louden he talks about more permanent upgrades carrying over run to run, that's great news for people that found Returnal a tough nut to crack.

Anyways here's that exact quote:

A key gameplay distinction between Saros and Returnal is permanent resources and progression making every death valuable. After every death you will face a changed world, but in Saros you will be able to choose and permanently upgrade your loadout from an evolving set of weapons and suit upgrades to “come back stronger” to overcome the challenges you face on Carcosa.

I hope Saros attracts a bigger player base this time with that change alone. You would think a lot of people have gotten to try out Returnal through PS Plus Extra or various discounts it's had since release.

Haha! I must get on a co-op game with you at some point, if it's not something before it then definitely Saros when it comes out. I think Saros is my fourth most anticipated game now behind GTA 6, Hollow Knight Silksong & Intergalactic.

I just realized I've projected that Saros is gonna be co-op even though it's not confirmed. Please Housemarque get it in from day one!

Hopefully they’re just not committing themselves to too much publicly incase they need to set it aside to get the singleplayer out the door but are planning for it to be there as soon as possible.

There may be a business argument to be made that adding co-op later gives the game a longer tail than if it offered both single player & co-op right off the bat.

For sure. I enjoyed Returnal's approach to progression, but the lack of upgrades between runs definitely made it much tougher to get into than other roguelike/lites. I'm confident that Housemarque can find ways to make it more approachable while keeping the satisfying challenge of the original. Maybe they'll give the player more agency over some of the more challenging elements, ala Hades heat system.

Heck yeah! I'm down for that if it has co-op, if not something sooner
