If you haven’t seen it, he played a similar character long before that in The Rocketeer. (Although I could be misremembering the Hawkeye series.)

We seem to be confusing Tony and Timothy Dalton.

Well, I don't know about you, but I certainly was. In fact, a quick GIS reveals that when I watched the Hawkeye series I probably thought Tony Dalton was Paul F. Tompkins playing vaguely Latin.

What is this a crossover episode!?

Thank you. I actually did quite a bit of multiplayer this year, but it was on PC with my nephew.

Here’s mine. I wasn’t going to look but glad I did.

I blame Elden Ring.

Mine was Fry Cry 6. I definitely didn't use my PS5 as much as I thought. But I definitely used my Portal way more than I would have guessed.

How's everyone else getting on with Nine Sols?

I just beat Lady Ethereal earlier, great fight but a very tough 3rd phase with the illusions attacking very quickly whilst you have the 'real' lady ethereal coming in with big charge attacks.

The thing is the charge attacks make you react initially until you see it enough times that you know to wait for the illusions to attack first then the big crimson attack needs dodged straight after from Lady Ethereal herself. Very satisfying to beat but it easily took me about 30 attempts.

The quick double swipe from the side is a pain in the arse to nail the parry for but with enough repetition it finally comes.

What a game! The story continues to be a delight, the characters are fleshed out, have strong identities, striking designs & are extremely well written.

I mustn’t start playing Nine Sols, I mustn’t start playing Nine Sols… it may be one for me to wait to arrive on PS Plus. Not sure my skills will be up to it.

I’ll have to find out what you thought of all the Game Awards reveals Spikeout.

I thought the Game Awards 2024 knocked it out of the park this year, fantastic show. I've been underwhelmed by most of the previous years but Geoff & his team really kicked it up several notches.

I'm very excited about a lot of titles but The Witcher 4 & Intergalactic - The Heretic Prophet from Naughty Dog being the standouts. The two things about each game bar the insane tech are the new Ciri voice actor being a big improvement over The Witcher 3 & that soundtrack in Intergalactic.....my goodness that was entrancing.

We're also getting a new Onimusha as well, loved those games back on the PS2! Rematch has a lot of Rocket League vibes so I'm very interested to check that out. A new sci-fi game from gen design, that little teaser has already got me wanting more.

I'm glad Astro Bot won game of the year too, well deserved. Team Asobi really did put creativity & fun at the heart of that game. Nicolas Doucet was visibly emotional & is such a sweet guy, him paying tribute to Super Mario Brothers was a great touch as well.

Yeah, I have so many games to look forward to now. Ghost of Yotei, Stalker 2 and Intergalactic alone make me feel like I’m in for a great year or two and there are dozens of other games that, if they live up to their promise, look incredible.

It sounds like AstroBot deserved it’s win definitely. I’m glad Balatro got some recognition. It’s quite good…

I saw the trailer for Intergalactic - The Heretic Prophet. I'm willing to give it the benefit of the doubt, but I did feel a few 'Star Wars' vibes when I watched it. I also felt uncomfortable with the product placement in the ad; Mun listens to music on a Sony sound system, wears addidas trainers, and 'drives' a Porsche. I'm all for corporate partnerships, but this felt like a lot for trailer, and I wonder what it portends for the actual game.

And as usual, there was no gameplay to be seen...

I’ve oscillated on the product placement. I’m not a fan of it in movies and I always think of the airwaves gum in Splinter Cell that stood out like a neon painted thumb. My main problem, I’ve realised, is if I notice it too much. It can easily kill any sense of being part of someone’s story or the feeling of existing in a fantasy world. If I don’t notice I don’t care. Cars in movies are a good example. No doubt studios have deals with car manufacturers so they have access to multiple cars in car chases, etc. That doesn’t bother me. Funnily enough Ubisoft clearly had a deal to put Jeeps in Far Cry 2. I noticed for a day but it didn’t affect my enjoyment after that.

Apparently, the game’s story is inspired by Akira and Cowboy Bebop. Akira had quite a bit of product placement (on the cool bikes, etc) and it sounds like, in Intergalactic’s world, something happened in the ‘80s to send tech in a different direction and the brands speak to that. If there is a logic behind the branding it also, hopefully, won’t bother me (I’m already feeling over it but that might just be the Naughty Dog fanboy in me.) The biggest and likely inescapable, danger is that big publishers will see it as a precedent and, even if it’s done artfully in this game, will slap products into games in a way that is blatantly obvious and does kinda ruin the experience.

Ah, I read your comment and immediately thought of the egregious appearance of the Converse trainers in the opening scene of 'I, Robot'; a scene that should have won some kind of Golden Shoehorn (no pun intended) at an awards ceremony that year. I don't remember the product placement in Akira; I'll need to dust off my copy of the DVD, and re-watch it.

I think one of the dangers for games is that the brand 'bends' the story or the gameplay. Wasn't one of the Forza games criticized for not allowing damage to the licensed cars that it featured? I dimly remember this being a thing for either that series or Gran Turismo. But I don't have anything approaching a consistent position on this. In the Intergalactic trailer, I had no problem with a Sony 'product' featuring. It's their game after all. And I was ok-ish with the Adidas trainers. But I downright hated the Porsche branding the spaceship, which felt gratuitous to me (and I've outed myself on this site as a fan of Porsche products).

Time - and more Intergalactic trailers - will tell...

I'm enjoying Nine Sols.. though every year I get older I realize i'm getting worse at these games. I've only beaten 3 or 4 of the boss/mini-boss with the healthbars at the bottom.

Its great on steamdeck trying to play a bit every night while wife is watching TV.

My son wants an external drive for his PS5 so he doesn't have to micromanage his games. From a little research it looks like he won't be able to play PS5 games from the external drive (but can play ps4). It also looks like the PS5 has an open m.2 ssd slot which you can use to play games. Is my assessment correct and if so, what would be a decent SSD for the PS5?

Of course he also wants a modded PS5 controller that looks like it will be about $170 so the SSD may have to be on the cheaper side.

internal NVME SSD Is the way to go.. just depends on your budget and how much space you want. To me, a better SSD would 1000% be more important than a better controller, but I'm old and too practical.

I've not steered far from the "popular brand" ones for my PC or my PS5. So a Samsung, Western Digital or Crucial. The main requirement is that it has to have a heatsink, and at least 5500mb/s. The latter I assume should be most nvme's at this point.

My guess is for 1TB it will run you around $100? THere are certainly cheaper ones, but I'll let someone else comment on how reliable a lesser known brand is.. I could just be a victim of marketing.

This is the NVME drive I bought for my PS5.

by far the easiest upgrade I have ever done.

I bought a Nextorage m.2 drive for my PS5 internal expansion slot because Nextorage was founded by a group of engineers who worked on memory storage for 20 years with Sony. Currently, I think Nextorage is partly owned by Sony, but I don't think they are involved in the day-to-day. Their PS5 drives include a heat sink. Currently the 1 TB is $84 on Amazon. 2 TB is $134.

When I bought the drive, reviews were very complimentary towards Nextorage. It's been a couple years, though, so I don't know about their current products.

Thanks, all. The Nextorage is $140 if I want it before Christmas but is faster with R/W of 7400/6400 vs the Ediloca at 4800/4200. Now I just need to decide if the extra $20 is worthwhile. I also need to see which he'd like more the modded controller or the drive as we've already gotten him some other stuff including some earbuds.

Looks like I got the Samsung 1 TB back in 21 for my PS5. I got a WD SN850X 2 TB for my PC last year. If it had been cheaper would have got another for PS5 probably.

Some of them come with heatsink but get marked up $30, when you can buy a good heatsink on Amazon for $10-15. So up to you, convenience or save a few bucks.

I was amazed, at first, that my play time on Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth beat my time in Metaphor: ReFantazio. But of course, it didn't: this year end summary just hit too soon, before I actually finished Metaphor. If you ran the numbers now, you'd be looking at the new king of Euchronia, baby!

Also, this number of hours does not include my obsessions with: Dave the Diver (Switch), Octopath Traveler II (Switch), Tactical Breach Wizards (PC), Rise of the Golden Idol (PC), or either of the Golden Idol Mysteries DLC (PC). It's been a rich year of gaming!

Oh wow. I forgot how much time I spent in FF7 Rebirth.

Fired up Alien Rogue Incursion. Very Alien Isolation vibes but moving into an Aliens situation. Quit before I got to any aliens. Scared.

Alien Isolation was at it’s most terrifying before you got caught for the first time. I can’t imagine playing in VR.
