Playstation 5 Catch-All

...I don't suppose you have any recommendations for PSVR2?

For me, my PSVR2 has become a source of disappointment... though not yet a source of buyer's remorse. In the first couple of months, I blasted through Moss, Star Wars: Tales From the Galaxy's Edge, and Horizon - Call of the Mountain; each of which was fantastic for different reasons. If I had to demo VR to anyone using my system, I think I'd show them Moss.

Then my progress abruptly halted. My next game - the demo for Song in the Smoke - didn't look particularly nice, and had an overly fiddly in-game user interface. Beyond that, I struggled to find anything that wasn't a generic wave-shooter or rail-shooter, or that didn't look a bit 'shovelware'.

I'll echo mrwynd's recommendations of Walkabout, 7th Guest (I actually played the original when it was a new game, and remember it as being a tedious and nonsensical experience, but I loved the VR remake), Demeo, and the Red Matter games (which are real stunners on PSVR 2). And easily my favorite PSVR 2 game, because I'm a huge fan of the Dishonored series, is Vampire: The Masquerade - Justice, a Dishonored-lite stealth game; it was a bit buggy when I played it at release, and I gather subsequent patches haven't completely gotten rid of all the bugs, but still it was an incredible experience to be a vampire version of Corvo Attano, lurking in the rafters and swooping down for a surprise bite.

If you've liked the The Room series, The Room: VR is great on PSVR 2; if you're a fan of puzzle games in general, I'll also recommend The Last Clockwinder and A Fisherman's Tale (haven't played the sequel yet). I'm not a fan of shooters - I actually had to give up on RE8 and RE4 on PSVR 2, because while I enjoy wandering through the environments I hated the shooty gameplay, but I did manage to get some enjoyment out of the rogue-like shooter The Light Brigade, and now that they've patched it I can recommend The Dark Pictures - Switchback as a literally on-rails shooter. And I've definitely heard great things about Synapse, another roguelike shooter, but it seemed too shooty for me to enjoy.

So, I'm farting around trying to get a 30th PS5 Pro. Everything online is indicating things going live 7 am PT. It was pretty funny because I have some browser tabs logged in, and I got into the yellow bar queue thing on Playstation direct oddly via the https://direct.playstation.com/en-us... page. Kinda freaked me out because it did state on that page that things go live at 7 am PT but the queue ended in 1 minute. My guess is they're getting things ready to go. So, who knows. I'm going to set an alarm and check at midnight PT for grins and I'll try to get one from 6:30PT to 7:30PT without special tools.

Edit: Yeah, I checked it through my phone, and the same thing happened. They just say for the 30th stuff that "you're early" preorders start at 7am PT.

Got into the UK version of Playstation Direct around 10.30 UK time. All the 30th Anniversary PS5 Pro consoles long gone!. Everything else available though.

I dislike the "forced scarcity" of this kind of thing more as I get older. I am happy if people enjoy it but I am not one of them.

What I really wish Sony would do is the design lab like MS does so you could get funky controllers in whatever suits you but that isn't how they roll (and considering how handily the PSX is beating the Xbox in sales I guess it is hard to argue their strategy is failing.)

Here's a live blog to follow. It's around $1200 and sold out in minutes in the UK and they're already on eBay for 400% the cost.

Yeah, what part of this makes for a fun celebration of an anniversary? I’m not personally interested in the anniversary stuff myself but feel bad for those that would want something.

Not really sure what the solution is. I was thinking maybe manufacture according to demand but maybe that would involve too much of a wait time?

Maybe just make the 30th anniversary ps5 the ps5 pro and make more than 12 of them? For me the ps5 legacy is going to be long lines, tiny supply and my failure to get one.

I agree with those points. They should have done some kind of lottery ahead of time or maybe even priorize older PSN accounts for the anniversary gear pre orders. I don't know. Sony hasn't handled anything well lately.

Yeah, looks like they opened up the queue for Playstation Direct at some point last night, so I'm out. No worries, though. I'll just grab a regular pro whenever those are readily available.

If you’re in the United States, I think anyone in the queue prior to the sale going live gets placed into a random spot.

From what I'm reading, this queue doesn't actually impact anything. There's no point in going in early, you have to refresh at go live regardless and then it's first come, first serve starting at that point. I could be wrong, there's alot of confusion online with this sh1tshow.

If anyone wants just the controller, they're live on Walmart and Best Buy

Move fast. Walmart already sold out.

Well, I was able to preorder a regular PS5 Pro and the 30th Edge controller through direct. Good enough for me!

Edit: The Pro 30th was "Unavailable" once I finally got to look at the Direct webpage.

I preordered a regular Pro as well. I decided to go for it as I sold a bunch of other gaming stuff recently and can put that money toward it.

Gonna wait until PS5 Pro is at Walmart. My wife is an employee and gets 10% off.

I have about 1100 in amazon funds earmarked for getting a pro from there. At least that's the plan.

I have BB gift cards from a PS4 Pro trade in app I'll grab either the Slim Anniversary Edition or Regular Pro on the 10th. Still on the fence about what to go with.

I got in queue at the start, but took 1:40 to get in. The Pro anniversary bundle was long gone by then, but I went ahead and got the regular Pro (which was my original plan anyway). I just checked now, several hours later, and there's no queue anymore and you can freely preorder the regular Pro. I don't think demand for them is super high, but I still think they'll sell out before holidays.

Forced scarcity with these special editions always sucks. I get that they don't want to make more than they could sell, but as usual, it was obvious the demand would be far greater than what was presented. They could have produced 123,000 instead of 12,300. They still would have sold out in minutes.

This is why I'm glad I never got into sneakers.

I missed the anniversary edge which is what I wanted. Had a work meeting run long and got in queue at 1030 instead of 10. Looks like I missed it by 20 min or so.

Best Buy, Walmart, GameStop, and Target have all had the regular controllers on preorder today. But none the edge yet.

Looks like there will be stock in stores on Nov 21 though. So pre-orders are scarce even though more are really coming. It's all very silly.

30th anniversary controller preorders were sold out everywhere when I looked this morning of course. I already have two controllers - white and maroon so it's not like I need one anyway...

Well, if it makes you feel better, when I got my actual email confirmation from Direct, the 30th Edge was missing even though it was in my cart and part of the total when my order was placed. Sad trombone. Whatever. I'll just spend that money on games. The regular controller is fine for my purposes.

Edit: I take it all back! I got another separate email confirmation just now that the 30th Edge controller is confirmed, so I guess I'm dumping a bunch of money at a pretty controller for no particular reason other than it is purdy.

Can somebody dumb down the PlayStation online services for me? Like, what is the best, what do they do, etc..?

Essential gives you 2-4 (usually) free games per month; games in “purchased” in this fashion are yours to keep even if you cancel your PS Plus subscription. Essential also allows you to play multiplayer games online through Sony’s servers. Destiny is an example of where PS Plus is required for certain online aspects of the game.

Extra gives you all of the above, plus access to a very large library of games to add your library. New games are usually added to this library every month or so and games that have been with the service for a while are often rotated out. Games earned in this fashion remain in your library, but are only available to you when you have an active Extra subscription.

Premium gives you all of the above, but also includes a few “top tier” games to add to your library. It also provides access to the PlayStation “classic” games I.e. PS1/PS2 games.

Each of those tiers also provides discounts on certain games and downloadable content. The quality of those games generally falls in line with the tier of PS Plus service you are subscribed to.

Just quick correction, I’m 99% sure that monthly free games “purchased” through Essential/Extra/Premium are not accessible when your membership lapses. They are accessible again when you resub, but not while the sub has lapsed.

I find the Essential tier to be very much worth it, because I play games frequently 2+ years after release, so I vacuum up all the free monthly games and frequently get to play stuff I hadn’t gotten to yet.

Extra tier is excellent if you are interested in the Game Pass-like library of games. They usually have 3+ high profile indie releases per year that are Day One releases. In 2024, for example, they have been Tales of Kenzera; Zau (looks good but haven’t gotten to it yet personally), Animal Well (phenomenal, one of my favorites of the year), and The Plucky Squire (one of my most anticipated games of the year, but just ended up “Good” for me). Also tooons of high profile Sony releases of yesteryear.

Correct. All PS+ games for any of the 3 tiers are like what is described for Extra:

I want that anniversary controller so bad....

Can anyone help me out? I couldn’t find an answer online: Why did my TV stop showing video for my Playstations?
My TV suddenly stopped showing the picture of my PS5 via both HDMI inputs, but the sound works fine. First, I thought the problem was the HDMI of my PS5 because using other devices (Switch, Macbook Pro M1) worked without any hiccups. Then I tried to use my old PS4 Pro: Same issues as before with the PS5. It would be quite a coincidence if both PS HDMIs stopped working at the same time, wouldn’t it? (I tried all the solutions found online from safe mode to using different HDMI cables) Is there anything that might set the signals sent by the Sony devices apart from the other HDMI devices tested?

Those inputs are in the same board in the unit so that makes sense actually. Time for a TV upgrade!
