Playstation 5 Catch-All

Yeah but when using remote play it's smart enough not to do it.

I sometimes remote play from across the room on PC while wife is watching TV and it doesn't do switch HDMI inputs or anything like normally when I turn it on.

Would it work with travel? Or are talking about taking the PS5 with you?

I'm not shocked to see it sold out as I bet there are not HIGH volumes of it yet and it's not so far out of impulse buy range.

New PS5 Slim Owner:

Now that the slim is released I pulled the trigger since it fits within my entertainment center. It's still pretty huge! What did surprise me though that, for a Sony product, it feels chintzy. I directly replaced the spot where I was pulling the PS4 out of so it was night and day (PS4 is a brick). There are no vent covers so you can see the internal metal frame from the vent slits. Also the horizontal plastic leg stabilizers bend so the whole console moves when I plug in a USB cord. I feel like these will eventually break so I imagine there will be third party solution.

The OS feels improved from the PS4 but did hang on me after updating the controller during initial setup. Had me freaking out for a moment since the power button wasn't responding but a long push fixed the issue. The only thing I'm concerned with is that I have a very popular TV (LG C1 65) and the circles thing they do to align the TV never work right. I either see them get cut off slightly or I get black borders. It's driving my OCD side nuts!

I'm an off centered thumbstick fan but this feels the most comfortable non-offset controller I have used! God of War is pretty great so far too!

Do you mean PS5, not PS4?

Hah, yes. Corrected and thanks.

I had the same issue with an LG TV that I first hooked it up to. That TV also had audio issues with my PS4 where sometimes no sound would work when coming back from sleep. It was fine on my Vizio and now even better on my Sony Bravia.

What did you end up doing? I chose no borders VS having full circles. It feels like there was a goldilocks area right in between that could have been an option.

I did the opposite and got used to the borders, at least for a while. I moved that TV to our guest room as soon as I could though to justify buying a new TV

Mine is an OLED so I'm always scared of having a constant image at any place, even it it is just black "Borders".

There are a number of recent reports that seem to indicate that that's no longer the risk that it used to be. Here's Digital Foundry on the topic of OLED burn-in:

I recently bought the LG G3 & it's an absolute game changer for my gaming. The improved input lag is very noticable in Rocket League especially with the 120hz screen enabling the 120fps.

Spiderman 2 looks better than ever, even 2D games like Rogue Legacy 2 the colours just pop more than they did on our previous LG LCD screen (that was still 4K).

I really want to try out Horizon: Burning Shores as that game looks sensational. The TV also is GeForce Now compatible so I'm going to go down that route for a lot of the big AAA games that I want full Ray Tracing in. I own Cyberpunk 2077 on the PS5 but seeing that thing with full on Ray Tracing & Path Tracing on PC is a sight to behold. I'm gonna wait for a sale then purchase that possibly at Xmas time.

I'm very tempted by Alan Wake 2 through that means. Honestly the LG G3 is one of the best purchases I've ever made.

The only thing I've to get used to is turning my PS5 on by the LG TV remote, once you choose 'PS5 console' on the TV it automatically turns the console on. If you've already turned your console on by the Dual Sense then doing this same process puts the console into rest mode. It's a bit of a pain but I've got used to turning the PS5 on via the G3 now.

I was originally under the impression that it would not work with travel, as I thought both the PS5 and PS Portal had to be on the same Wifi. I don't think that is the case as I've read that it will work over other Wifi making traveling a possibility. The hitch with that is it is always going to depend on the Wifi where you are located as well.

Yes that’s my understanding. You don’t need to be on the same wi-fi, just need a connection. Technically, you could probably use your phone as a hotspot, but, again it all comes down to the strength of the connection.

I haven’t used mine outside of home yet and probably won’t much if ever. At home the connection has been great.

PS Black Friday deals

During PlayStation’s Black Friday promotion from November 17 – 27, players who join PlayStation Plus can save up to 30% on 12-month membership plans. Current PlayStation Plus members can save 25% when upgrading a current plan to PlayStation Plus Extra, or save 30% when upgrading to PlayStation Plus Premium/Deluxe.

Sure, just when I decide to stick with Xbox for the next year. I can't afford 3 game subscriptions, even with Black Friday discounts! (Currently using Game Pass Ultimate and GeForce NOW). I wish Xbox had an annual subscription option. I guess Game Pass is popular enough that Microsoft would be leaving money on the table if they offered discounted 12 month subs.

Yuck. So they aren't even discounting their outrageous essentials price increase from a couple months ago? My yearly subscription expires in February. I am not interested in upgrading. I just want the damn thing to be able to talk on the internet. f*cking walled gardens...

Speaking of Black Friday deals... Logitech G29 Driving Force Racing Wheel and Floor Pedals is on sale at Amazon for $199. Compatible with PS and PC.

My coworker had the model right before mine and had it happen with Networks like ESPN where the logo stays in the same place.

Has anyone gotten their hands on a portal yet? Todays podcast made me intrigued.

Yes I got mine on release day. I haven’t heard the podcast yet. I’ve used it for a few hours and I don’t regret the purchase. It will do what I want it to do and I like it far better than my phone plus a Backbone.

I heard the podcast discussion now. And I pretty much agree. For some, maybe a lot of people, the other ways of remote play are going to be fine and not worth investing $200 in the Portal. But if you’ve tried those and found them a bit lacking, play PS5 a lot or want to, and like the feel of the Dualsense, it might be worth it.

I swither around what to do here, I'm slowly saving up to having the disposable income and have space in my life for something to play around the house, when we have finally sat down in the evening post kids bedtime and my partner is watching something I am vaguely/not really interested in. We are currently pretty much solely a PlayStation house other than a few small things I play on the laptop. The portal fits that slot nicely and I have PS Plus and Extra so a big chunk of games ready to go. The Steam Deck and Switch however would give me access to a different array of games and seem to serve better when I am traveling with work albeit that's only a night every couple of months so not a big thing. The slot for purchase is into January though so no rush, I think the Portal edges it right now.

I got my Portal last week and have used it pretty much daily since it arrived. I have three young children and my PS5 is on my projector in the basement; those two factors mean my PS5 gaming time is pretty much limited to after bedtime, which these days has been pretty late It's a great device for my situation as it makes it possible to play my PS5 during the day when I do have a little downtime here and there, and it works well in the evening if the kids are watching a show and I want to be around but also do my own thing, or if my son is using my PC but I feel like doing some gaming. I also don't like gaming on my phone, having messages/emails/etc pop up while I'm gaming is annoying and I might need to be checking email/Slack/etc while gaming at the same time so I don't want to lock my phone into a Backbone or something.

My kids also have enjoyed the Portal so far as the PS5 setup in the basement is both a little complex for them to get going plus I discourage them using the projector unsupervised but they've enjoyed playing some PS5 games on the Portal too.

So far I've played Midnight Suns (my most played game on the Portal so far), Tony Hawk's Pro Skater remaster, Spiderman 2, Gran Turismo 7 and Fall Guys. Everything has worked incredibly well! I was pleased that both Tony Hawk and GT7 were perfectly playable with no discernible lag when playing on the same wifi in the house. There were a couple of times I hit some minor artifacting hiccups for a few seconds, but nothing significant.

I also took it out into our shed which is also wired for internet but is on a separate subnet on my home network. It worked for a little bit out there but maybe 10-15 minutes in I hit some pretty significant connection issues to the point of it not really being playable. Not quite sure what happened there and I haven't tried since, but that didn't work as well as I had hoped. This was a bit more of an experiment than a situation I'll really be in often but was still hoping for better results.

The screen looks great to me. I know it's not OLED but I'm not sure I would know the difference, it seems bright enough and colorful enough to me. Overall the controller feels great although I'm pretty sure the sticks are a bit more loose feeling than my DualSense, although I haven't done a side by side comparison yet. Still, it feels good in the hands and the screen is a nice size. The "touch zones" for the touch pad emulation aren't perfect but have been good enough. Love having all the haptics in there though, it's great.

I'm still probably going to play games like Spiderman 2 on the big screen, but there are a lot of games like Midnight Suns or Diablo IV that I really don't feel the need to sit on the couch in the basement to play and I think the Portal is going to result in me playing those games way more often. Like others have said it's clearly a pretty niche device but for someone like me it's going to let me use my PS5 way more than I do today!

I have been using mine exactly as I intended - wife/kids using the TV but I want to play a game and for that it is working wonderfully. I love it and I think it was a solid purchase for my use case.

Apparently this is a real product but it costs three times the price of a regular controller. Now if it was a Tetley Tea controller I might be interested…

It should come in Twinings Earl Grey...

Classy.

Man that’s ugly. I think I saw there’s an Xbox one too. If they’d resisted putting the logo on it would be a touch more palatable. The red is probably iconic but I’d be happier without that as well.

I drink enough Yorkshire Tea I'd be genuinely tempted if this wasn't £150.

If you told me tomorrow was April 1st and not December 1st, I would believe it.
