Welcome folks, and happy “30th Anniversary of the original Prince of Persia” week! You may all celebrate by wondering what happened to Broderbund Software anyway, remembering that Ubisoft bought it, and realising that’s how we ended up with Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time.

There’s change afoot at Destiny 2. Not only is the base game going free-to-play on 1 October, the Shadowkeep expansion is also dropping. Fellow GWJer, ZeroKFE, has posted a detailed explainer of what’s new and what’s free at the GWJ Destiny 2 forum thread.

Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon: Breakpoint mixes up the Ghost Recon formula by adding a little Metal Gear Solid 3. The previous entry, Wildlands, outsold The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild in the West, but was not as widely received by critics. Plus, its depiction of Bolivia as a narco-state run by a corrupt cartel nearly got Ubisoft sued by a whole country. Understandably then, Breakpoint is set in a fictional place, Auroa, and the big bad is a former Ghost gone rogue (played by John Bernthal). A bunch of survival mechanics have been included: you’ll have to manage hunger, thirst, and fatigue. You can also be hampered by injuries, which require first aid items made through crafting. Add in leveled loot, skill trees, and AI teammates, and you got a stealthy, RPG, survival shooter goin’.

If you like CRPGs based on 2nd edition Advanced D&D rules, but somehow have spent the last 20 years without access to a PC, then this week is your Christmas. There’s a slew of classics coming out on the consoles: the Planescape: Torment: Enhanced Edition / Icewind Dale: Enhanced Edition bundle, Baldur's Gate: Enhanced Edition, and Baldur's Gate II: Enhanced Edition. The Enhanced Edition label here means more than a mere graphical and UI upgrade. The EE devs dug into the original design docs and consulted with the original devs in order to dig up previously deleted content, polish it up, and put it back into the game. They also reverse-engineered features from later games to add into the older ones. This means new quests and locations, new classes, and in the case of the Baldur’s Gate series, 4 new, fully-voiced companion characters. That’s why these are all priced as new AA releases. I got my old-game fix last week with Jedi Outcast, but I’m sorely tempted.

Another remastered release this week is Roman Rumble Lost in Las Vegum: Asterix & Obelix XXL 2. Some of the new features sound like they should have been included in the release version from 2006: upgradeable health, a skill tree system, and fast travel. I loved the Asterix books as a kid, but never got into the games.

This week I’ll be staying on my Pile, but I will give a GOTW to Destiny 2: Shadowkeep for being another solid entry in a well-supported game that just keeps on truckin’. I may still want the concept of “games as a service” to get off my lawn, but when it’s done as well as Bungie have done here, even I have to admit the appeal. I’ll still grumble about it, though.

Here's the list, now in release-date order!

We were just chatting about this in the Switch Thread. I pre-loaded the game based on how good the demo is; very excited.
