2020 NBA Catch-All: Offseason

Lots to go but the latest reports are that the players have unified in wanting to continue the playoffs. The ones who wanted to leave, LeBron and Kawhi apparently, have thought it through and agree with this. But in order to do so they still want to see a far greater commitment from the league and owners. There are several meetings today (owners, players, players and owners) that will determine the course of the future. I commend the players for doing this. Disappointed in the tepid and inconsistent responses from MLB and NHL. Not surprised but still disappointed.

I think step one would be to get any lurking Donald Sterling type owners out if they still exist.

Can't really expect the NBA to project power externally until they as a league and ownership group clean house first.

I am glad the owners are meeting with them. I hope the other teams not in the playoffs are involved in those conversations too.

Sounds like they are aiming for games to be held on Saturday. The Raptors/Celtics game would be Sunday. This is all pending the 5pm ET meeting between 13 playoff team owners, 2 players from each team, Adam Silver, NBAPA executive director Michele Roberts, and Michael Jordan (chair of the labor relations committee).

Well, they got $300M from the owners, Houston's owner is making the arena available as a voting site, and the Bucks had a direct conversation with the WI AG and Lt Gov to discuss what they can do to help and a dialog on next steps. For the "nothing will be accomplished" crowd, that is the beginnings of a big FU.

I would guess it doesn't stop at $300M either. If I am the DeVos' (Orlando Owner and notorious pro MAGA platform) and other owners, this sort of pressure may not be a one off thing and who and what they support being brought to light and focussed on, may either make them reconsider or get out of the sports game.

Where are you seeing the money numbers? Can't find any stories yet.

I heard on LeBatard that in the CBA, the billionaire owners pledged $30mm/yr ($1m per franchise) for 10 years to causes the players like.

That is still status quo stuff tho. Nothing changes with more money for Boys and Girls clubs. We've been doing that for 50 years.

Laws need changing. Tax codes need changing. Ownership groups need changing. Etc.

Multiple places. Here is one ($1M per year from each owner):

Of course they do. The big thing to me is that the players now have a bigger hammer and platform in this "partnership" with the owners, if they use it wisely.

Right that's from 2 months ago, like top shelf mentioned.

Nothing new has been announced today.

Ah, sorry. Did a fast Google. Was listening to the Woj and Lowe's Podcasts and they made it sound like it was new info.

I went to Woj on Twitter and saw no news haha. He's always on it.

Do we do threads for the 2k games anymore?

Anyway I tried the 2k21 demo. Nothing seems particularly new so I’ll be sticking with 20 til 21 gets good and cheap.

I think there was a generic 2k thread somewhere that maybe covered 18 and 19 or something like that. Not enough posts for yearly releases I think.

I don’t think we do. I’ve been really frustrated with the franchise of late. Especially how I’ve tried 2 versions of the game on Switch and it’s almost impossible to play it away from my home since the game wants to phone in for some many modes.

Former Blazer, all-star, and 18 year player Cliff Robinson dead at 53.

This year never stops taking.

NVALive 19 was a simpler and more basic take, and about a million times for fun. But we don’t get competing sports games in the age of social media.

I think Live 19 sold in the tens of thousands. Still enough that the MyPlayer type mode was still fun and plenty to play with.

It’s why EA never even tried to reboot MVP Baseball. Quality doesn’t matter. There is one winner and one game selling nothing.

I tried NBA2K20 last year, and it’s just not fun. Wish it was.

Bucks advance. In control the whole game. Got down to 3 about halfway through the 4th but then 8-0 run to get back to double digits.

Westbrook back tonight for Houston. Hmm...

You’re the only one on that train Jay

I play on Switch, exclusively handheld. The online check doesn’t bother me because I do so in my house, and just play other games when I don’t have wifi.

Yeah. I kept wanting it to work on plane flights and eventually just gave up. It’s a huge bummer. I don’t doubt some people can work around it, but I couldn’t.

Not very competitive games this afternoon. Hopefully the night cap is better. Or not, if the Jazz are doing the winning.

Murray can't miss tonight. Come on Jazz

That was incredible

He’s been so bonkers the last three games. Less than one calendar year ago his contract was being trashed and he was considered trade bait for Brad Beal by many fans. At age 22, mind you.

Have some patience with your talent, GMs!

I haven’t wanted any schadenfreude like Chris Paul besting Harden and Westbrook in 7 since the days of the Heatles.

The choke memes for Westbrook on Twitter last night were so fun.

Man, that would be so great.

I've been in hiding since Celtics-Raptors game 1 but I'm really looking forward to both Games 7 out West.

Is it just me or does the schedule seem different this year? Some teams are going to be playing their 2nd game of the 2nd round while other teams are still in the first round. I thought in the past each round started about the same time for all teams but I could be wrong - is this normal or just because of the bubble?

How does the NBA plan to line the schedules back up, just make a team sit for a week while their eventual opponent catches up?

That’s on purpose. Players asked that the league do this so they could get teams out of the bubble quicker and move up the end of the playoffs. In theory if a few rounds go fewer games everyone gets out quicker.

Ah yeah that makes sense to blast through as quickly as you can to get people out, even if it means some teams are sitting waiting for a while.
