Pile's Labour's Lost - Pile of Shame September 2019

This is the last monthly thread. Next month is the end of year extravaganza. I haven't played anything I've declared. Instead, I go and dabble here and there or play games I've already beaten on new platforms (hello Diablo 3 on Switch).

If you're interested, m0nk3yboy, has the 12 month 2019 pile plan thread over here.

A quick reminder, in order to be considered "Pile of Shame" the game needs to be at least three months old. Otherwise, it's just a new game you haven't gotten to playing yet.

Also, if you are curious about some of the previous threads, Picks of the Pile, etc... Please go here and check out the spreadsheet I setup.

Let's get on to the games!

This month's Pick of the Pile is

Hollow Knight

"Brave the Depths of a Forgotten Kingdom
Beneath the fading town of Dirtmouth sleeps a vast, ancient kingdom. Many are drawn beneath the surface, searching for riches, or glory, or answers to old secrets.

As the enigmatic Hollow Knight, you'll traverse the depths, unravel its mysteries and conquer its evils." (Official Site)

Tactics Ogre: Let Us Cling Together - LastSurprise

I’m going to carry over Flower (multi) and mark it complete! I’m also going to declare Tactics Ogre: Let Us Cling Together (PSP).

I will carry over A Bird Story (multi) that I haven't touched yet, and also declare Grandia III (multi). The rest of the month will be dominated by Monster Hunter world Iceborne.

For September, I'm going to pick a couple of short to mid length games and take it from there.

Call of Cthulhu (multi)
Axiom Verge (multi)
Hollow Knight (multi)

Hopefully, I'll be able to replicate August's success and get through all my picks!

Hm, need to play something... just reminding myself.

Right. So I’m carrying over Hakuoki: Edo Blossoms (Multi). And I’m going to go ahead and declare Assassin’s Creed Origins (Multi) as well.

Carrying over The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening DX (3DS/Multi). Hoping this is the month that I'll actually beat it

September pledges:
Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy: The Telltale Series (PC/multi) - played through episode 1 last night and enjoyed it. Looking forward to more.
Journey (PS3/multi) - gonna try to find an uninterrupted period of 2-2.5 hours to do this. Didn't manage that last month.
Remember Me (PS3/multi) - not the first time I've declared this, but hopefully the last.
The Darkness II (PC/multi) - I had a great time with the original recently. I hope the sequel manages to be at least as good.
Virginia (PC) - not sure what to expect. Gonna let it surprise me.

Games I'm playing but not declaring, as I doubt I'll finish any of them in time:
Psychonauts - the PS2 game doesn't run very well on a PS4 Pro. Lots of framerate issues.
Mirror's Edge: Catalyst - loved the first and hope I will at least like the follow-up.
Mass Effect 2 - time to pick up where I left off about 2 years ago and 7 hours in.
Nier Automata - for the JRPG club

I forgot Borderlands 3 is dropping this month. Heh. Gonna be rough to get everything done, but I will declare Blackwell Convergence which we're playing for the GWJ adventure game club.

Well, that was quicker than I expected. Call of Cthulhu is in the books. On to the next game!

I’m going to go for Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag (PC) for this month. It’s been languishing for a couple months, just need to put the time into it.

That's a wrap on Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag for me.

I'm going to declare, and mark complete, Persona 5: Dancing in Starlight. Credits have rolled, but I'm going to keep at it until (at least) I clear all the trophies.

You know what? I think this month, ahead of me buying whatever game wins the JRPG Club voting, it's time to clear off some backlog. I'm going to declare Strider (NES) and Donkey Kong Country Returns (Wii). These have shown up under my name in prior pile threads, but this month I'm serious.

I will drop Grandia III for now. I'm not giving up on it, but there is no way I can get this done this month, considering the amount of time I'm putting in Monster Hunter World.

And Strider (NES) is down!

I wrapped up Blackwell Convergence (Multi) which is still a very good adventure game (looking forward to Deception!). I also completed Hakuoki: Kyoto Winds, as in finished replaying the game with all 12 routes and three different outcomes for each route, so I've barely started digging into Edo Blossoms. Oh and I'm only 10 hours into AC Origins.

Ah well. A for effort, right?

Ten days to go and I'm about 2 thirds of the way through Axiom Verge - am really trying to get every single power up and item that I can - and about the same in Hollow Knight. I really feel the pull to shoot for the Platinum trophy in the latter, so that might be quite the challenge in the time there's left before the month ends!

Stick a fork in Donkey Kong Country Returns (Wii), it is DONE!

Edit: wrong system. It’s Wii, not NES.

Just got 1 out of 4 endings in Hollow Knight. I ended up with 205% and the whole thing took me close to 40 hours. I still have a couple of bits of DLC to play through, like the pantheons - beat the three first ones, haven't tried the other two left. Did complete the Phantom Troupe DLC, as well as the Hidden Dreams DLC.

So, I'll dive back in to get the other endings and polish off any trophies I missed. I'm missing one Mask shard to get the full set, so there's that... oh, and completing the Hunter's Journal.

Really enjoyed this game!

Wow. September sure went by in a hurry! As I'm not going to finish anything else in the remaining 2.5 hours before midnight, here's a quick tally of the month:

Credits rolled on:
Journey - Wow! Believe the hype! I was afraid that I was setting myself up for disappointment, but Journey totally delivered! I can totally see myself replaying this in the future.
Virginia - About as interactive as flipping pages in a book, so barely a game. One helluva experience though!
Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy: The Telltale Series (PC/multi) - Not Telltale's best effort, but far from its worst. I had a good bit of fun with this, and some scenes truly were laugh-out-loud funny.
CHUCHEL (PC) - I didn't declare this. My older son is finally old enough to appreciate this and doesn't lose interest after 3 minutes anymore. Had a great time playing most of this with him on my lap.

Other pledges:
The Darkness II - Made progress and I do like it lots, but I doubt I'm even halfway through it.
Remember Me - no progress....yet again.

Other games played:
Dead Island - got back into this one day and want to play more soon.
Mirror's Edge: Catalyst - Played the opening section. I remember the original playing better with mouse and keyboard, but the sequel also feels good on a PS4 controller.
Untitled Goose Game - About halfway. Loving it.
Final Fantasy VII (Switch) - I got about 75% of the way through it in the mid 90's. Starting from scratch now and liking it. It's great having the loading times cut way down.
Record of Lodoss War (Dreamcast) - it's a poor man's Diablo clone with PS1 quality graphics. Somehow I've found myself playing it several nights in a row though.

Yeah short month and not even a full page of posts. We're all slackers.

I blame Borderlands 3.

And Monster Hunter World Iceborne.

I did fairly well, though trying to get all the trophies in Hollow Knight worked against me, especially after I checked a guide and realized that I had indeed gotten all the mask fragments but the trophy simply didn't pop; the only trophy I didn't manage to get in this playthrough... so I'll park the game for a new playthrough in the future with the sole purpose of getting all mask fragments again and getting that darned trophy to pop and the Platinum to go with it.

Will have to carry Axiom Verge, though.

Looks like we're all slackers, anyhow. Hemidal hadn't selected a pick of the month. Just sayin'.

Spoiler:

Seriously, I hope he's okay.

I didn't even start up my 3DS to play Link's Awakening last month.

I know Hemi has periods where they are otherwise occupied, but now I'm wondering, myself.

I'm alive. Trying to fill two positions at work and the beginning of blend season for one of the departments I manage has been time consuming. Throw in an acquisition and a couple of other capital projects and I've been neglecting the thread.

I'll get a pick of the pile up and a new thread shortly.

Phew. You're alive and hanging in there, that's what counts. <3
