Ah, grocery store arcade machines. Now that takes me back!

Ours had one of those pick-10 Nintendo systems where a quarter bought you something like five minutes of game time on a NES game of your choice.

I remember saving my dollar-per-week allowance until I had enough to buy a Game Gear so I could bring it to the grocery store instead of looking at the boxes of the rental movies while my mother shopped.

I bought the version that didn’t come with sonic so I could put the extra money toward a copy of Mortal Kombat.

No regrets.

Edit:

I still have it, and it still kinda works.

I had a paper route when I was kid so I was "rich!"

My gaming ritual would be to collect from just one customer, an old lady who paid $2.50 in quarters - taped to a piece of paper and sealed in an envelope. Then it was off to either the deli or the pizza parlor which had two machines each. I must have played tens of games over the years as they rotated, but for some reason the ones that I remember most fondly were Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom in the deli, and Kung Fu Master in the pizza parlor.

Another funny thing is that I don't remember actually buying anything in those stores. We just stood there for hours pumping quarters into those machines - which is guess was just fine with the store owners.

...why didn't I think of the blanket divider!?

I’d like to host an event in Greensboro, NC is if you live in that state please look here;

Suddenly I'm playing Battlezone at Andrea's Liquor because someone is always on the Pac Man machine. Do I play more games or get that new issue of Mad?

Shawn's comment on split screen peeking in Mario Kart being a fundamental part of the strategy brought back some great memories.

With our group of friends, winning in the sleaziest way possible in Mario Kart 64 was the ultimate goal. We even had a catalog of idioms to draw from. Badly translated (because it was a wordplay on a phrase by a Dutch soccer commentator) we would shout 'IT'S ALL ABOUT RACING SKILLS!', when crossing the finish first because someone else slipped over a banana in the last straight line.

Against my best friend at the time, who had spent a year abroad in the US with a family that owned a N64 with Mario Kart, this was actually the only way to win. Oh how satisfying it was to hold on to a star while barely keeping him on my radar, and then activating it at just the right time to slip by him and his pathetic banana in the last few inches.

I've been out of the loop with GWJ for awhile. Somehow it got deleted from my podcast app and I've been so busy that I didn't even notice for months. I have a lot of casts.

So what is Shawn doing? Leaving for a year to a monastery?

Amanda is having surgery?

Is the cast still happening?

Shawn is in training to become a monastery, and Amanda is having the requisite cybernetic implants fitted so she can control the site remotely from anywhere in the world.

Any questions?

All the best to Certis for his future endeavors and thanks for running the site and podcast for so many years.

SuperHOT was mentioned which gives me an excuse to post a video! I've been playing the challenge modes in SuperHOT recently and this is a music celebration of those modes. They're a lot of fun.

Speaking of reading Garfield books while eating fries (the horror!) I knew a woman at college who borrowed a graphic novel from the local comic shop in order to help with her graphic design work. It had a lovely glossy cover and was the shop owners pride and joy. Somehow, while working with it, she managed to get a mark on the front cover. Quickly, she decided to use some nail polish remover to get rid of the mark, which it did, but it also removed an area of gloss making a portion of the cover noticeably matt. She was mortified. Out of desperation she then wiped bay oil on the cover to reestablish the gloss look, if only temporarily, and went to the comic shop. Handing the novel over as fast as possible she thanked him profusely and fled; never to return to that shop for as long as she was at college.

Gaming rituals, I've got one that still lives on to this day as my brother are now in our mid to late 30s.... respectively.

This will also make all you fine folk north of the border beam with pride as well I think.

The National Hockey League. A game of sportsmanship, history, pride, and goonery.

My brother and I have been fans for awhile. We can thank the playoff run of the 1994 NJ Devil's to thank..(hot take: Hail Lou and Hail the trap).

We would play against each other on and off during the year but thanksgiving we would have our Playoffs. We each chose our respective teams, neither could be our beloved devil's as we had a gentleman's agreement to avoid a fist fight over who could be them after the black eye fiasco of 1993.

So we play and reach the finals and the world would stop. Best of 7. Yell cursing and should we punches too Sean!!!

The tradition continues and will continue and it makes me so very happy. Were several stated away now but thanksgiving the puck will drop.
