A Brief Question-and-Answer about...

Q: What the heck is GreedFall?

A: GreedFall is an upcoming (September 10) RPG for PC (Steam), Xbox 1, and PlayStation 4.

Q: Is it more of a JRPG (kids with blue hair using swords and magic) or more of a Western RPG (angry-looking adults using swords and magic)?

A: Neither, exactly? Thus far it appears that hair in the game only comes in colors God intended. There are indeed swords and magic, but there are also guns. What sets GreedFall apart is that its setting is heavily inspired by the renaissance/imperial era of European history, roughly the 17th century, rather than the medieval trappings more common in mainstream RPG's. This means you get to pimp your character out with capes and extravagantly plumed hats.

Q: So aside from collecting hats, what's it about?

A: Specifics on the story are a little fuzzy at this point but basically you play an adventurer/treasure hunter/mercenary who leaves a polluted and plague-ridden mainland continent and heads for the recently "discovered" island paradise of Teer Fradee, where several Old World nations are in the process of establishing colonial settlements whilst contending with each other, the native peoples, and the various beasties and supernatural beings which inhabit the island.

The player will be able to ally themselves with the various factions on the island and have up to two companions accompany them on their adventures. Character development quests and romance options are confirmed to be a thing. The decisions the player makes will affect their relationships with the various factions and with companions and potential companions/romance partners, and ultimately affect the geopolitical fate of the island.

Q: How does it play?

A: Nobody knows for sure yet. Well, that's not entirely true. I mean, the developers and a select few YouTubers/journalists might.

What we do know is this: It's a third-person action RPG. It's not entirely open world, but rather has a number of zones linked together, somewhat like Borderlands or S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Combat is real time with melee weapons, firearms, and magic, but you can pause at any moment to select spells or items to use. There will be opportunities to complete quests and resolve conflicts through stealth or diplomacy/charisma rather than simply cutting a bloody swathe across the island. Character progression is classless, allowing you to mix and match abilities from different branches of the skill tree as you desire. There is no level cap. The developers have said you would need to be around level 90 to unlock every skill, but a complete playthrough will probably only take you to level 40-50 and at the moment there is no New Game+ option.

Q: How ambitious are the people developing this?

A: Since they're talking about picking up the torch falling from BioWare's failing hands, I'd say pretty ambitious: https://www.escapistmagazine.com/v2/...

Q: That sounds optimistic. Is there a reason to be pessimistic?

A: All of this developer's previous games were decidedly "AA" sci-fi titles with decidedly middling reviews.

Q: Can you conclude this post by vomiting up a bunch of video links?

Boy, can I!

This game has been on my radar for months now. I'm hoping the increased budget and development time pays off for Spiders.

I REALLY hope they hired some better writers and translators. I really liked The Technomancer but it had some rough bits. Now they are going for topics that I just don't think they are equipped to handle.

It's coming out 3 days before Borderlands 3 so I'll wait until a bit before I jump in on this. Will 100% eventually be playing it.

This is THE GAME one of my coworkers has been waiting all year for, he’s convinced that it’s going to be some epic, old-school Bioware level RPG masterpiece. He’s never played a Spiders game before. I’ve been trying to manage his expectations.

I've played an inadvisable amount of Spiders games, and why stop touching that hot stove now? Day one.

I've always thought they have been so, SO close to having a really good RPG in every game they make but either they don't have the budget, or they run out of ideas, or something gets in the way. Will definitely be keeping an eye on it.

I'm enormously skeptical that this topic is going to be handled well.

I have a weird soft spot for most spider games but I fully expect to struggle through the first few hours of this game, dying if something looks at me funny, not completely understanding the story or what I'm supposed to be doing, but end the game being at near god levels of power and having fond memories of my time with the game.

I generally like them but I don’t think I’ve ever finished one.

Oh, that seems to be everyone's fear.

Still, I think it looks promising.

I have not seen much on this game but now I am a bit interested. I guess i'll spend my lunch hour looking at the links.

p.s. I can't wait to hear the impressions from you all when its out. The Community has saved my wallet from so many games due to the Hype train.

This looks great from the trailer... and I didn't know anything about this dev, but from what I've read it is better to temper my expectations.

Hopefully we'll all be pleasantly surprised.

Whats with these Eastern European Developers and colonialism? I have nothing against Spiders..they seem to punch above their weight and try and deliver beyond their means time and time again which is admirable for them but this topic feels like its destined to be problematic for all but the hardcore Gator crowd.

Spiders is French though.

Well...

Answers the "what's up with the obsession with colonialism" part.

Spoken like a true Canadian, eh?

13 minutes of gameplay with dev commentary. The customization looks pretty nice and varied.

I just bought Dragon Age: Inquisition again because it was $10 and watching that 13 minutes of gameplay made me realize they are almost the same game.

That seems like the best everyone including the developers can hope for, really.

I am not complaining mind you. But stuff like this makes me feel better about buying older games, and it makes me realize I need to calm that "must have new game" itch.

I've never played anything by Spiders, but I've been interested in this game for over a year now. It looks like it's shaping up nicely, but I guess we'll just have to wait and see.

It’s said a bunch but I’ll repeat it, be very cautious. Everything Spiders has done is awkward. They basically make old BioWare games without the attention to detail or execution. They have gotten better with each game, however. If you’re new to their work, wait for reviews and opinions from here.

Due to the crowded release schedule over the next two months, I probably won’t around to this until next year*.

*I said this with The Technomancer and pretty much immediately bought it.

Makes perfect sense. Even if it gets good reviews, I won't get to it until next year as well, so I won't be rushing to make a decision. That said, I do hope the game turns out to be great!

I already purchased it - I'm a sucker for this kind of game, and don't mind supporting developers who do it, even if all their previous games were flawed.

They have, as several have noted, improved vastly after each game though, and Technomancer was pretty cool, so hopefully this will be fun as well!

Launch trailer

I also pre-ordered it. Maybe I am a sucker, but initial impressions on youtube and twitch seem good.

Kinda wondering why I haven't heard even a whisper about in on the weekly podcast. Seems like something we'd normally get at least one host playing early. Doesn't seem like its embargoed from the number of folks playing on streaming services.

This game is $40 (ten bucks off sticker price) at the unfortunately-named GamersGate right now. Unlocks on Steam.

This game practically drips with a "Humble Bundle Monthly in 16-Months" vibe. Similarly, held off buying BattleTech for months and months and *poof*. Does look like a really cool game if they execute correctly.

Heather Alexandra gives a very good and detailed semi-review of GreedFall. She hasn't finished the game yet and is about 10 hours in. Technomancer was a 25-30 hour game.

She likes the gameplay and options available, combat is clunky but serviceable, but well...

I see, from time to time, slivers of what Greedfall might be, and I trudge along in what feels like a misguided pipe dream that it will deliver something, anything deeper than what I’ve seen so far. I don’t dislike the raw moment-to-moment experience of Greedfall. It scratches a particular itch that I’ve been eager to scratch in the absence of Dragon Age. If you’re eager for an RPG of that form, Greedfall will oblige. Regardless of my misgivings, I admit to a horrible curiosity in what might come next. But those misgivings are powerful and can’t be ignored.

Greedfall might manage to capture some of what made BioWare’s adventures great, but it feels aimless. It has, so far, not managed to speak up and say anything worthwhile, even as it offers meager acknowledgement that something isn’t quite right with its world. That lack of conviction, so far, is a black mark that I cannot get over and which leaves a frustration that overshadows everything else.

Non-spoiler spoiler: he gave it a "buy."
