Welcome folks, and happy “3rd Ashes Test hangover” week! You may all celebrate by: (a) saying Australia was robbed by that last not-out LBW decision, (b) signing the petition to give Stokes a knighthood, or (c) being glad you don’t know, or have to know, anything about cricket.

The Bard's Tale IV: Director’s Cut is a comprehensive upgrade of last year’s The Bard's Tale IV: Barrows Deep. It adds a bunch of new enemies, weapons, and other gear. It gives more options for class creation and character customisation, and also tweaks the UI and difficulty settings. On top of THAT, it bundles in DLC that adds a whole new final chapter. I presume all these goodies will be included in the Xbone release of The Bard's Tale IV: Barrows Deep this week.

Just Cause 4: Danger Rising is the last bit of DLC for Just Cause 4, and its big talking point is that Rico gets a hoverboard. However, the big boss is on a submarine, and the very same movie that introduced us to the coolness of hoverboards also showed us that they ain’t so fun over water. Avalanche have apparently realized this and sprinkled tether points around the water to make it hoverboard-friendly. Danger Rising drops this week for Season Pass holders; everyone else has to wait another week

Decay of Logos launches amid some controversy. It bills itself as a kind of Zelda-meets-Dark Souls action-RPG. IGN had given it a bad review, scoring it a 3.9 with a substantial markdown for technical faults. That review was later withdrawn after the devs told them that they had accidentally given IGN the crappy, earlier build of the game. Anyhoo, it looks nice and all, and the devs dropped the price amongst all this kerfuffle, but buyer beware.

Knights and Bikes has a pretty cool pedigree. It’s developed by Foam Sword, which is made up of a bunch of ex-Media Molecule (creators of LittleBigPlanet) staff, and it’s published by Double Fine. With a pedigree like that, you can expect a strong, distinctive art style and some kooky encounters. Gameplay-wise, it’s co-op, RPG-lite adventuring inspired by The Goonies, or for you younger whippersnappers, the parts in Stranger Things where they’re all riding round on their bikes without any adult supervision. Looks like a fun game to play with your pre-teen kids.

Speaking of pedigree, Control is by Remedy, the devs behind cult classics Max Payne, Alan Wake and Quantum Break. It has a spooky X-Files-ish plot, where you play as an agent of a shadowy government organisation charged with investigating supernatural phenomena. What makes it my GOTW is the wide array of cool powers you can wield – there’s a transforming gun, fireballs, levitation, shielding, and punching powers. Then there’s the mind control, and a Dark Phoenix level of telekinetic power over the destructible environments. No doubt this is all buttressed by an upgrade system; colour me interested.

My absence here seems to have gone unnoticed, and I’m cool with that. I’ve got some exciting stuff on the front burner that I’m champing at the bit to talk about, but can’t yet. Suffice it to say, there’s a very good reason you haven’t seen me around lately, and it’s not because I finally listened to those of you who vocally wished I would go away.

But enough about me, this week I step out from behind my big, blank curtain because there’s finally something coming out that excites me. So much, in fact, that I preordered it.

I’m something of a Johnny-come-lately when it comes to Platinum games. I found Bayonetta off-putting for a variety of reasons, and Nier Automata fell off my radar after I heard you had to play it nine times to really “get” it. Then someone gave me a copy of Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance, and I finally started to grok what Platinum was all about.

And that, my friends, is combo multipliers. I’m not sure if there is a person who values a good combo multiplier as much as I do, but I would be very surprised to meet them.

After I finished kicking myself for missing out, I immediately dove into the back catalog. Bayonetta, Vanquish, Bayonetta 2, Nieronetta, Transformers-onetta; I consumed them all with gleeful abandon.

Now, Astral Chain comes to the Switch. I have absolutely no idea what it’s about, and what little knowledge I have comes from a Nintendo Direct trailer that explains the gameplay mechanics in some detail. I was immediately sold, and my preorder is currently winging it to my local Gamestop so they can totally forget to call me when it arrives.

I’m very excited. The only downside is that I have less than a week to finish Dragon Quest Builders 2. I haven’t cleared the first boss yet, but I think I can probably manage it. I just need to ignore sleep, food, work, and my family.

Let’s do this! Astral Chain awaits!

Comments

My absence here seems to have gone unnoticed, and I’m cool with that.

You mean outside of posting a comment or two every week?

Astral Chain looks off the chain.

I'll see myself out.

I'll likely jump in with The Bard's Tale IV: Director's Cut on the PS4.
